Summary: Mort
Review: A significant use for which I bought this scanner was for my wife and me to make copies on my printer using the one-button. I installed it today and, to my dismay, it didn't work. After two hoours on the phone with Canon tech support, Canon gave up and said it won't work with a laser printer. I have a laser printer with 1700 KB memory but it wasn't enough. This is a warning to prospective purchasers.

Summary: Great for slide & platen scanning, weird reboot problem
Review: Bad qualities:
As the buyer from CA (Jan 11, 2004) stated, the power must be cycled on this scanner from time to time. Save your scans frequently, because after ten scans or so - the software may give error codes & hang. After reading the documentation & checking Canon's web site, I've found nothing that remedies this problem.

Good qualities:
The scanner is great for the price range it retails in. I highly recommend it for slide scanning & platen images. I don't recommend it for scanning negatives - it takes a few tries to scan each negative which is unacceptable for me.

Speed & reliability:
Speedy USB 2.0 interface & decent looking device. Above average scanner. After six months, it still functions as new - which is very important in today's low price provides low quality type of marketplace.

Summary: Very Good To Excellent Quality But Slow!
Review: Being an amatuer photographer, I wanted a scanner that could scan slides and negatives. The 5000F is a flatbed scanner so it can also scan documents which makes a very versitile and useful scanner. Usually flatbed scanners do NOT make good film and slide scanners; the 5000F is an exception. It's actually based on a rather decent CCD technology rather than the cheaper CIS chip (most flatbeds), which is the reason for the very good film/slide scanning performance. It has a special back-lit slot in the cover for slides and negatives. You can scan up to 3 negs or 2 slides at once. It also has an IR dust and scratch removal sensor that works fairly well (but not on scratches). The quality is very very good but the scans are quite slow, even with a USB-2 connection. You must remove a white backing board, insert the negs or slides in provided carriers, and position the carriers in the scanner. The graphics software, Archsoft PhotoStudio, is quite adequate but not nearly on the same level as Adobe Photoshop. There's MUCH additional software for creating photo albums, photo databases, OCR, etc.. Installation is very easy. It took me 20 minutes to install and start scanning after a bad day at work! The quality of the scans is excellent, the scanning software is very easy to use, the software package is quite comprehensive, scanning negs and slides requires some fumbling, and the scans are slow (but I've seen slower). The quality of the slide/negative scans is the MOST important feature to me and the 5000F delivers. **For the money**, I am VERY happy with the package overall.

Summary: Spots on image
Review: Hello, I purchased this for christmas 2003. Right out of the box I had the same problem as "wshiii from Philadelphia, PA" The glass was dirty on both sides and all the images (no matter what the resolution) had white spots all over them. I will call canon tonight to see what they can do. If they cannot fix it, I will look elsewhere for a replacement

Summary: Good, but could be better
Review: I bought this scanner because I wanted quality with out breaking the bank. I am running this on P4 1.8ghz with 1GB of RAM. I am using the USB 2.0. The scanning speed is outstanding if you are scanning photos at 300 dpi or less. 600dpi is definitely acceptable. Scanning at 1200 DPI, well lets just say I never let it complete and set it back to 600 DPI.

Another reason why I bought this was it scans 3 negatives at once. If your primary reason for buying this scanner is for the negative scanning, you may be better off buying a film scanner. The quality of the negative scans are great, but it is a slow process.

I have not done OCR scanning yet.
I have not done the multiple photo scan.

The only thing that really annoys me are the buttons in the front. I sware I must hit one of the buttons accidently every 5th opening of the scanner cover.

For the money it is really good scanner. I would recommend it at this point. I will update my review once I have done OCR and Multiple Photo scanning.

Summary: Good, but not everything to everyone
Review: I bought this scanner because of the Canon name. My last scanner was a Canon, as is my printer. Both have performed flawlessly. I chose this particular model because of the USB interface so I could use it with both my Mac and my Hewlett Packard IBM Clone, and because it has an attachment to scan negatives.
As a basic scanner, it's great. Good color. Good sharpness. Though, it's a somewhat larger than you might expect based on the pictures. But don't be misteken -- this is not a professional film scanner. It's an OK mid-range consumer product. Colors tend to be off slightly when scanning negatives using the "dust and scratch" mode. Also, the "dust and scratch" mode is not available in resolutions over 600 dpi. I get the sense that otherwise, this is a powerful piece of hardware. The problem is that the software for it is horrible. The Mac and Windows versions are identical, and neither is really up to the task at hand. They are poorly laid out with no clear-cut way to perform simple tasks. If you're scanning into something like Photoshop, it can control the scanner through the TWAIN driver. But if you just want to make a quickie black-and-white scan of a piece paper to fax to someone, it's too much of a hassle. Again, hardware quality is great. But the software leaves a lot to be desired.

Summary: A Positive Experience
Review: I didn't buy the Canon Canoscan 5000F from Amazon.com, but this was the place I checked for all the specs, and where I read the reviews.

I have been very pleased with the 5000F. I bought it yesterday, and in three hours last night, I was able to scan in nearly 200 photos. (200 photos singly; I haven't tried the multiple scan feature yet, but I can't wait to go home and try.) It's very simple to use, and the quality is fantastic. It works as well or better than I'd hoped it would. I especially recommend this to other "serious amateurs" like me!

Summary: Good for scanning slide, BUT....Moisture Stamp under glasses
Review: I got this one two weeks ago. I was using it to scan my slides.
Software and Hardware are pretty easy to use and scanning quality is good too. I was happy to have it...
BUT...
I found there is a big Moisture Stamp under glasses last night !
I will return it today.

Summary: Look elseware for a quality scanner.
Review: I have been extremely disappointed by this scanner. I bought it new a few months ago, but found that little spots appear on scanned photos for 600dpi and higher. I've cleaned the scan bed and photos. The problem appears to be on the other side of the glass. To get half-way decent scans, you have to hunt for the area of the scan bed with the fewest marks. Cannon sent me a replacement (referb.) which has the same problem but to a lesser degree. A third scanner is supposedly on its way.

The whole experience has been less than positive and makes me question Cannon's quality control process. It's highly unlikely I'll be purchasing another Canon scanner in the future.
