Rating: Summary: Very good scanner for the price Review: This scanner is real cheap and works great, I've owned one for 2 years. The scanning software is very basic, but if you have Photo Shop or some off-shoot of it, you really can't beat this scanner for the price. I've used one's that are 5x as expensive and frankly can't tell the difference (they may be a little bit faster). It's not the fastest in the world, but it has worked fine for me for 100's of photos and even text documents. Regarding the 1st review on this page, if you have a crapy computer system that isn't sophisticated enough to run graphics hardware or software, you're going to have a problem no matter what.
Rating: Summary: Very good product Review: This scanner is very good for the money. If you see any reviews that make you hesitate, dont listen to them. Installation of hardware was simple and easy. The manual is so-so, but good enough.[The product requires you to have the USB plug plugged directly into the computer, and if you do not have any available, you must get a USB hub(something cheap and easy to install, probably can buy it here) for it to run.) I have a Mac and yes, there are a few problems loading the software. (Turning off the extensions in the control panel works-mac users, you can still use the products without any trouble.) The software included is ok, and the Adobe software is good for the average user who likes to edit pictures, but has limited editing options. The other software is not very good from my opinion and is not worth using. Note that this software comes with the product. If you dont mind spending 60 bucks get Adobe Photoshop LE, for editing photos, in Amazon.com. Scanning (or copying if you have a printer) is easy, and it took me twenty minutes from the box to the scanned, printed, page. I was amazed at the clarity of the scanned picture--it picked up minute details. Note that the actual scanning surface is not as large as the top of the product as shown in the picture(but its definitely big enough). It is not too big at all. For the mostly ordinary user like me, (who by the way is not an adult, which shows you the ease of this product) it is very good, easy, and produces quality photos for a variety of uses.
Rating: Summary: The hardware delivers but the software is horrible Review: This scanner provides beautifull scans on my MAC G3 when it works, but the software is very buggy and causes serious system crashes (which were confirmed by ConflictCatcher). I called customer technical support and they said there was no cure.
Rating: Summary: It dosen't work Review: To say that I don't like this product and the company who made it is an understatement! I purchased it new and have never been able to make it work. Furthermore, numerous calls to the company's tech support line go unanswered and they have not responded to my emails. As far as I can determine, customer support simply does not exist. After exhausting all troubleshooting hints (both in the manual and online), I simply had to give up.
Rating: Summary: Good scanner for older OS (win95/98/mac OS8) Review: Windows 2000 and MAC OS9 prove problematic.Windows 95/98 - Scanner worked well and was easily set-up. MAC OS 9.0 - Scanner installed and worked well but I cannot uninstall the scanner, when it is not connected the whole system crashes. Windows 2000 Pro - After 18 months I finally have this scanner working in windows 2000 it turns out that the umax software installs the driver file pv8630.sys into you c:\winnt\system32 folder, if you move this file to the c:\winnt\system folder your scanner will work. Umax support don't seem to be able to tell you this, which is very disappointing.
