Description:

Perfect for small graphics businesses, professional offices, and other commercial ventures with multiple needs, the Microtek ScanMaker X12USL combines speed, sharp images, and brilliant colors in a single-pass scanner. This scanner offers 1,200 x 2,400 dpi, high-definition 42-bit color for outstanding resolution, a flat bed with a full legal-size 8.5-by-14-inch scanning area, and a software package designed to meet the needs of even the most demanding users.

The ScanMaker X12USL is a solid but light workhorse, weighing in at only 17 pounds. Its design is sturdy but readily transportable and aesthetically clean. With the software bundle, which includes Adobe Photoshop LE 5.0, you can produce outstanding professional-quality images. And editing and enhancing images is a snap with Microtek's ScanWizard5 software, which provides a simple and straightforward approach to navigating through your scanning tasks. The included Trellix Web Microtek Edition and optical character recognition (OCR) software further assist in reading scanned text and editing images. After scanning and editing your images, you can print them or export them to e-mail with a single mouse click.

Most modern scanners are easy to connect and include software that is easy to install, and this is true of ScanMaker X12USL as well. We especially liked the individually zip-locked bags labeled for SCSI or USB connections, and the separate installation and reference guides for Windows and Mac. (You can connect the scanner to either a USB or SCSI port on either a PC or Macintosh, including iMac.) Though setup was easy, we highly recommend reading the well-written, very logical reference guide for the fastest, most trouble-free installation. It took us only 15 minutes from the time we opened the box to the time were were scanning. We were a bit disappointed that the software was not more thoroughly documented. However, once it's set up, the software presents all scanning options in an intuitive onscreen layout.

Overall, we were very impressed with the ScanMaker X12USL, with its formidable software package, and with the resulting dazzlingly color-accurate scans. --David Greenberger
