Summary: Cool functioning scanner with good software bundle
Review: I agonized long and hard about the purchase of a scanner. I read all kinds of reviews, along with the reviews here at Amazon.com. I finally decided on this Canon N1240U Scanner because of its looks, size, features, and software bundle.

This scanner is really slick looking, and it isn't much thicker that a stack of 4 or 5 legal pads that can be purchased from the office supplies store. The scanner is very portable, as the USB cable supplies it power, so there is no need for additional cables - just one.

Set up was really easy - just follow the instructions, and users will be scanning in about 5 minutes.

There are three one-touch buttons that allows users to scan and save on their hard drives, scan and email a document, or scan directly to a printer. They are easy to use, and the scanner software gives users the opportunity to change many of the default settings.

Reviews said that the scanner's main drawbacks were its slow scanning speed and lack of transparency adapter. Never owning a scanner before, I can't comment on the speed, but it seemed good enough to me. I've learned to be patient with image producing equipment, as I have had to work with a variety of printers and copiers in my work history. As far as a transparency adapter, I don't think I'll be scanning from transparencies, so I should be OK.

I've scanned financial statements, magaznine articles, and old photographs, and I have been pleased with the results. I scanned all of 2001's pay stubs as my initial "fun" project, and experienced fine results. First, I scanned the documents at 100 dpi resolution, and saved them as tagged image format (.tif) files. Then, I converted the documents to PDFs by using Adobe Acrobat 5.0. I also used this program to bundle each individual .tif into one .pdf document. In short, a year's worth of pay stubs takes up 14 MB on my hard drive. Not too shabby.

I haven't played much with photos, since I have a Olympus 3040 Zoom digital camera, but I may take a look at scanning my old baby pictures to make sure they are preserved forever.

...This scanner offers good performance at a darn good price. So far, I am very happy that I made the decision to purchase this product.

Summary: works well but a little noisy
Review: i am quite surprised by the noise this little gadget makes. it was purchased to be used in a library but we found that it has a rather loud voice; otherwise, it works fine. one complain, the software bundle seems to favour PC a lot more then MAC.

Summary: Bad purple tinge on some pictures
Review: I am retrning this scanner to the store for a refund.

The main reason is that some snapshots when scanned show a purple shading not present in the original photo. Not every picture, mostly pictures taken in the shade. This is unacceptable. I emailed Tech Support about this purple tinge problem but they, so far, have failed to respond.

I had read about this purple issue in some reviews, but not all. My guess is that the users who did not report this problem had not scanned an image that would generate the purple tinge....yet.

Other negatives are that the scanner connector cord is very short. It limits scanner placement options. I can't place the scaner on the shelf I used with my old scanner. It requires a special connector so no ordinary USB cable will do.

The scanner is noisy, but not objectionably so.

The scanner is always on and draws power from the PC through the USB connector. I like to turn equipment on when I want to use it.

But the overriding concern is the purple tinge. So I will read reviews about other scanners a lot more carefully now.

However, if an occasional purple tinge to your picture is not objectionable to you (maybe purple is your favorite color), then this is a good scanner at a great Amazon price.

Summary: EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS
Review: I bought one of these for my son for xmas. After hearing him talk about how much he liked it I bought one for myself. The quality of the scans are better than I expected. The physical shape/size couldn't be any better. And, the software plug-in from Canon is very user friendly and works with all my graphics software. Had it up and going in about five minutes. Having Adobe Photoshop Elements bundled with the scanner was an added bonus.

My son uses Windows XP and I use a Mac. Great product for either world.

Summary: Nobody could help this work on my Windows ME
Review: I fell for this scanner for it's very kool looks and color that matches with my Sony Vaio PC. The whole setup was plug and play and went very well. The software that came with it is excellent(Photoshop Elements). But, me or any Canon Tech support people couldn't help me get this one scan for me. It kept giving Handler Error from Windows Imaging program and TWAIN Source not found from other apps. I replaced it with another one and still had the same problem while all my other USB devices from Intel's webcam that uses TWAIN drivers to digicam and printer worked fine.

I had like 5 Ref numbers from cannon(Q133240, 8595085, 8595121, 8599769) support and the final one was supposed to be their top tech person. Wasted about 2 full weekends PLUS about 10 weekday hours on this scanner. I was told by canon that i will get a replacement scanner from service dept from which i get disconnected or forward to another dept who then forward me back to support. I was in this loop for about 5 calls and finally decided to walk back to store and return it and take a break from scanners for some time!!

Summary: Very Sharp
Review: I found this scanner to be an excellent product, at a great price. Its only 1 inch thick, which is really nice because it looks good and grabs peoples attention. On top of all this, it comes with good and easy to use software. It has only one cord (very convenient) and scans beutifully. I must say if you are going for a good scanner, that will not make you broke, this is a good buy.

Summary: No Outlet required.
Review: I love my new scanner. Tiny, and no additional outlet required. This scanner is powered entirely through the USB cable reducing the fire hazard under your desk.... you know what I mean.

Summary: No problems
Review: I purchased the Canon 1240U scanner, a bit costly than those available in the market. But the quality of the pictures made for all that extra $$$ spent. This one is really sleek and light weight and doesnt need any extra power cables that hang around.

I would strongly recomment this to anyone.

Summary: No problems
Review: I purchased this scanner after checking several review sites. I use it only for home use (just photgraphs so far). I haven't had any problems with it in the 3 months since I have owned it. I purchased it along with U Lead's Photimpact 8 and have had excellent results.
