Rating: Summary: Excellent scanner Review: A great scanner. Easy to setup with only one connection to the USB port that includes its power supply. The bundled software for scanning images is very easy to use and provides nice image editing features, similar to Photoshop although not as extensive. It also includes software for converting text. This software works remarkably well, although its been several years since I've used this type of software so perhaps its all good now. I also appreciate its small footprint. For a really small footprint it comes with a small plastic stand that holds the scanner up on its side. Overall, an impressive device.
Rating: Summary: Good Job Review: After checking all the other reviews i still believed on ... reputation as a senior player in ecommerce, they didn't let me down. Timely and Cheap compared to anywhere else on the Web.
Rating: Summary: The good and the bad -UPDATE Review: Be forewarned, I'm being as honest as possible. My first reaction to the idea of a USB scanner was panic. To this day, I have had no luck with USB zip 250s, or anything USB-like. Well, this scanner was different. Oh, and to the fellow with the high end computer -- I have a Sony Vaio Digital Studio tower (very high end here...)...even RIMM ram...worked perfect. I installed it in no time with windows ME, following the instructions exactly. Oh, be sure to quit every program running before installing the software like it says....always safe to do that anyway. Now the good...this is simply incredible. The size? The one cord for power and USB? The new scanning technology with the 3-color LED lights instead of a bulb which will blow out?...automatically powersaves and shuts off the LED light when done scanning!!! All very great perks. Incredible scan quality for the price, and wonderful bundled software (even though I already had Adobe Photoshop elements...)...it came with it! Now the bad...the only thing I can honestly find wrong with this fabulous piece of equipment is that it can be a bit loud when scanning certain resolutions...though not as loud as some old scanners I've heard from umax.... So before you go and pickup the latest HP or umax scanner, I _highly_ recommend the Canon CanoScan N1240U! I've never seen pictures so crisp in my life.... UPDATE (5-27-02): I've had this scanner for quite some time now and I'm still in love with it. I've upgraded to Windows XP on my tower and it still runs flawlessly. This is truly an amazing scanner with great quality, fast scans, and very silent operation. I _still_ highly recommend this scanner after having owned it for quite some time. I see its also a good deal cheaper then the amount I paid at the time. You can't beat this :).
Rating: Summary: Windows ME users beware! Review: Before I purchased this scanner on Amazon I e-mailed the Canon support group and asked if the scanner was FULLY compatible with Windows ME. The response was unequivocal: "Yes, it's fully compatible." So imagine my surprise when I took delivery yesterday (3/4/02) and couldn't get the damn thing to run due to an issue with my "Twain Driver" (no, I don't have a speech impediment). I spent many frustrating hours including two LONG calls to Canon's excellent (I'm serious, they are excellent) tech support. Fellow Window ME users, let me save you a lot of grief. #1 Apparently Norton/Symantec Utilities are somewhat incompatible with Windows ME which hangs up the install process. DEACTIVATE YOUR NORTON/SYMANTEC UTILITIES BEFORE INSTALLATION. #2 In your INF folder there are thousands of 0 kb EOM files. DELETE ALL OEM FILES & THEN DELETE THEM FROM THE RECYCLE BIN ALSO. Warning, this process can take many hours!...
Rating: Summary: Good scanner for home scanning needs Review: Bottom line: This is a good scanner at a reasonable price, but you'll still need to use software enhancements to correct the scanned image. I bought a new computer to replace my aging, 4-year-old PC. My old PC used an Umax Astra 600S (SCSI card) which I didn't want to install on my PC -- times have changed and everything has gotten better, including scanners. I did my due diligence -- visited the scanner reviews at [websites] and also read all the customer reviews of people who had actually bought and used various makes/models of scanners. The Canon N1240U scanner fared well, both among the professional magazine reviews and customer feedback. That was encouraging. Best features of this scanner: it uses a USB (version 1.1) port to both power the scanner and to send the scanned image to the computer. This is nice because you can stow the scanner somewhere, pull it out when you need it, and plug just once cord in to the scanner to get everything to work. This is really nice provided you have a front-size USB port on your PC. The next-best feature is its very small design -- hardly bigger than a notebook! That makes it easy to stow away, or, if you leave it on your desk, it leaves a very small footprint. The scanned images come out good, not great. I found that the images were slightly darker than the original, and the colors were more vibrant than the original. If you scan an overexposed snapshot, this scanner makes a much-improved scan over the original. If you scan a perfectly-balanced, professional photograph of your child, you'll be disappointed with the scanned image. But read on... The copy function worked very, very well -- on my HP880C printer, the scanned image printed looked barely distinguishable from the original -- and that was without using software to alter the scanned image at all! Since my new computer uses an LCD flat panel, the differences between the original and the scanned image may be the way the default settings are set on the display (eg, it may not be a problem with the scanner at all). Rather than use the CD that came with the scanner to install the scanner driver, I just visited the Canon website and downloaded the latest driver for Windows XP. I had no problems at all with the installation process. It's not a speedy scanner at all ... Overall, you'll be pleased as long as you don't have to have the fastest scanner on the block, you appreciate easy setups (on XP!), and you don't mind tinkering with scanned images to get them just perfect.
Rating: Summary: Bad experience Review: Bought this scanner from Amazon. Disabled Antivirus programs etc., and installed successfully in my Windows ME machine. Was unable to do scanning. Called Canon Technical support. Went through all the troubleshooting procedure with them. Concluded that there must be some problem with my USB port. Since I haven't tried any other devices on the USB port of this machine, I was also doubtful of the USB port. Today tried a digital camera on the same USB port with the same cable. Works just fine. Called Canon Technical support . They are asking me to try the scanner in some other machine, because eventhough the USB port is working for some device, it ,may not work for this scanner since the power drawn from the USB port may not be sufficient for the device. If I try some other machine and make it work and if it didn't work in my machine , What advantage do I get. I am ready to return the product. I consulted another friend of mine who bought the same scanner for his Windows XP machine. He was unable to make it work and returned the product. From my experience I won't recommend this product to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Light , complete & effective Review: Comes with a large suite of software (newer drivers were available on the web), can be mounted vertically, has a cool lid that allows bulkier objects to be scanned, is ultra-light & ultra-sleek, and works under XP. The multi-photo mode is slick, and works like a champ. The caveats: It's not ultra-quiet, so if that's a concern, you might be disappointed. Also, the multi-photo mode seems hard-wired to 300dpi, which should be fine for most everyone's needs. A three-year extended warranty can be had for $50 on Canon's site. Overall I like the price & scan quality (hint: try all the options before complaining about the quality). If you don't need 1200x2400dpi, maybe the N670U would be a better option (does it come with all the software?).
Rating: Summary: Best Scanner 4 the $$ Review: Easy to install on Windows 2000. Popup box says that Twain drivers are missing; however, you can easily download from the provided Canon site. Total installation was @15 minutes, including plugging in the cables, etc. My first scan was of the directions ! Excellent OCR reproduction. Didn't have to correct one word, before saving it in Word 2000. Sure beats my HP 6200c scanner at work and this one is easier & smaller to use. Buttons on the unit will enable you to use it for copying, scanning/saving, or e-mailing. Saves me time & effort, especially with losing where I saved the picture ! Just sent my brother a copy of a newspaper article about him. Scanned it for e-mail; and away it went. Couldn't be easier. Detail is great, better than I expected.
Rating: Summary: A great, sleek scanner Review: First off this thing looks awesome! Secondly, and most importatnly, the scan quality is excellent. Reviews on other sites warned of slow performance - no way - not compared to other scanners I have used - this is the fastest I have used. The software is incredibly easy to use - I did not ready any of the online help/manuals. Someone here mentions that the scanner is "loud" - NO WAY. I have no idea what you are talking about. Yes, you can hear the scan mechanism. But, loud - no way. I have heard loud scanners, like the HP in my office - that thing has made me jump from time to time. But, this, purrs.... Buy it NOW. You will not be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: Gone through two of these. Worst Scanner I ever had Review: Great when it works. Worked fine for 2 months out of the box. Then it died. My system began to hang anytime I tried to use the scanner. Canon replaced my NEW Scanner with a REFURB. The refurb lasted about two weeks. It still scans. But the scans are blurry with a dark streak on one side. I've owned several scanners. Never had one fail before. Much less twice in a row.
