Rating: Summary: THIS IS JUNK. DON'T BUY THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!! Review: I bought the Scanmaker 4800 in August from BestBuy. I used it a few times, maybe 10 or so and the scan was so..so..but the problem is this: The glass panel that you put the item to be scanned on has one end that has fallen down into the scanner thus makeing the scanner unable to move and function. I called microtek support and they said" turn it upside down and hit it untill the glass falls back in place". I did and it did fall back in place for about 30 minutes. I called them again, gave them my info includeing serial number at which point they said" we're sorry, but your scanner is out of warrenty". I said "what, I just bought this less than 4 months ago"? I was told that it does not matter that the warrenty started from when it was shipped to the reseller. I protested and asked to speak with a supervisor, i was connected to the voice mail of a David Lee. As of this date I have left over 45 voice mails for him without a return call. I also have called the company over 200 times and I am unable to get this issue resolved.So what have I learned? 1.Microtek makes and sells defective products. 2.Microtek Does NOT honor their warrenty at all. 3. Spend a little more and get a scanner with a real warrenty. Good luck Steve McDonald ( A very very dissapointed microtek customer)
Rating: Summary: Machine not bad but Service not good Review: I had the 4900 for about 6 months and was happy with it. After that time I noticed 2 heat marks on the underside of the glass which showed up in the scanning. I had to make several phone calls at my expense (they don't have an 800 customer service no. and the wait time consistently exceeded 30 minutes), they told me I had to send them the scanner and they would repair it. While I shipped it priority, they sent it back to me via ground. It took 2 weeks. When I opened it up and tried it, the screen had a bluish tint and it made noise. After more calls, they agreed to replace it with a new machine. They arranged for ground transportation and sent a "new" one back priority. The new one also had a bluish tint and made a tinny noise when scanning. After more phone calls, they felt that the scanner was performing within proper ranges. So I'll wait until I can't use it and then replace it with a different make. I weight the customer service 1/2 star.
Rating: Summary: Common defect? Review: I ordered one of these scanners and when I received it there was a small particle of white material on the inside of the glass. I contacted Microtek and they advised me that I could not clean the inside of the glass so I should return the scanner. I returned the scanner to Amazon.com and they shipped me another one. When I received it I found that it had two smaller spots of what looked like the same material on the inside of the glass also. These spots do show up on a scan rendering the scanner useless.

I thought I would use it to scan in pictures of my son and print out Christmas cards, etc. Since I don't have as much free time as I would like I probably used it 3 times to scan in photos and 2 times to scan in documents that I needed a second copy of. I recently tried to scan in a family picture for a friend at work and the photo had horizontal lines all over the left side of the picture. I went to microtek support online and tried the two procedures they suggested in their FAQ's. When that did not work I emailed them with my problem. After 3 days I received their response. I seems that after spending $120.00 on a scanner and using it 6 times that my scanner has to be repaired. Their repair facilities are located in Southern California or Canada (since I am in Michigan that does me alot of good). Oh, and since I am beyond the 1 year warranty period I will be charged $80.00 per hour. What a joke! I would recommend never buying this product.

Review: I went with this scanner because of the impressive resolution capabilities and the (alleged) XP compatability, as well as Microtek's impressive reputation in the commercial scanning world. Additionally, the price is very attractive considering the unit's features. The software gave my system problems from the get-go, causing it to crash twice. When I did get some images to scan, the results were not impressive--focus was soft, and light and color were not reproduced accurately. I returned the unit the following day, so I will admit to the possiblity that I did not give it a fair chance, but my patience was exhausted quickly. I bought a Canon D1250U2F to replace it, and the contrast was night and day--the Canon has performed extremely well with only minor complaints.

Rating: Summary: Does it all! Review: I'm mostly using this scanner for web design, and you don't need a lot, for that. But the few times I've had to duplicate some photos, they've turned out wonderfully. Either stand alone (one button functionality) or with the OEM software, it's easy to use. This scanner has me looking for a better printer to take advantage of it's capabilities. And there was nothing else that performed like this for the price. Only thing is, you'll need to cruise the online help, 'cause the provided material is sparse.
Rating: Summary: Works for me! Review: I've been using the ScanMaker 4900 for half a year on a 400 mHz Pentium II running XP. The scanner has more than lived up to expectations. The hardware seems well engineered, and the software is powerful. Low resolution scans are satisfyingly quick. At the other extreme, you can have as much color depth and pixel density you could ever hope with scan times appropriate to the accomplishment. (One operation that does really seem to slow things down is descreening.) It is unrealistic to expect an inexpensive scanner to accomplish perfect color fidelity, but our scans have done a good job of matching the originals. We haven't tried 35mm slides, partly because of the inconvenience of setting up the attachment, and partly because getting a good transparency scan from an inexpensive flatbed seems like such a reach. The "standard" interface is appropriately simple, and the "advanced" one powerful. That power comes with a price, though, for figuring out the software logic requires an amount of effort only justified in a production setting. Microtek apparently doesn't believe in power switches, but does provide a power-saving mode that turns off the lamp after a designated time. Since we switch users a lot and often boot up only to check email, the scanner lamp is left on more often than not. The scanning software does not communicate directly with the programming of the push buttons, an inconvience shared with many other scanner brands. The result for us is that we ignore the buttons. Judging from other reviews, quality control and user support are an issue with Microtek. We got a good one and would buy again.
