Rating: Summary: Boycott all brother products Review: At about 18 months i got an ERROR 41. It means a $150 service call on a $200 printer. What a crock.
Rating: Summary: Another error 41 Review: I also bought a Brother MFC multi-function printer in this case MFC-3420C. Just 13 months after buying it it started getting Error 41. Brother said the warentee is only good for a year, and so we need to spend $200 to fix it. Same price as a new one. I will never buy a Brother multifunction printer again!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Avoid Brother MFC printers with the same head Review: I am another recent victim of the dreaded Error 41, just after the warranty period. Had the cartridge empty errors reported here throughout its life. Word needs to get out that Brother inkjet units are very shoddy products designed as disposable items. As far as I know, all Brother MFC inkjet machines use the same head and prone to the same problems. Do a web search on Brother Error 41 and you will see that this a chronic problem that Brother has known about for a very long time. I wish I had done the search before I bought it.
Rating: Summary: I got error 41 but replacement service was excellent Review: I bought my 4420c printer in Oct 2003 and had no trouble at all for the first 9 months, through reams of printer paper. Then when using it for an increased amount of printing than usual, I got the message Error 41. After a little trial and error with the same result, I called Brother and they sent me out a replacement, a 4820c instead. I got the package in 2-3 days, with a mailing label and instructions to pack up my 4420c in the same box and have it picked up. Initially I thought this better model was just a loaner while mine was to be fixed, so after I didn't hear from them I called them. They said I got the 4820c because they didn't have any 4420cs, and that it was a swap, not a loaner. So I was very lucky, but in their defense, I have had the 4820c (which they warrantied until the end of my original 1 yr.warranty) now for 6 months with no problems. It's a much better machine, and if it lasts a reasonable period of time (like at least several years),I would certainly take another chance on them, based on their service. I'm sorry others had such a bad experience. Maybe some heads rolled.
Rating: Summary: Great Machine Review: I have been very pleased with this multifunction printer. It is very quiet and has everything you need. One feature that is really nice is that you can hook your digital camera memory card right to the printer and print the pictures without having to go on the computer. I am comparing this printer to our old one, which was loud and wasn't a multifuncion, but the quality of this one is so much better and I love having the copier without having to scan things to the computer. I really reccomend this multifunction printer.
Rating: Summary: Not Durable Review: I liked this printer at first because I was able to insert my CF card from my digital camera right into the front of the printer. It would then download all my pictures. Soon I found the ink clogs so easily that after about 5 pages printed the black ink was only half there. It was very light and smudged. I would have to get it to run a cleaning cycle. Sometimes it had to clean 3 times or so before the black would work. It also happened with the colors several times. The photo printing was so-so. Then I got an "error 41." This says to unplug the printer and call brother. Great. Its a generic catch all error I've found and it can mean your printer is now useless. This happened to me after only having the printer 5 or 6 months.
Rating: Summary: Good Value Review: I researched these machines until the cows came home ( literally , I live on a farm) . I had a 5yr. old Brother MFC that provided good service but was no longer compatible with my new computer's Windows XP . I worried about reviews about low print quality . After 6mos. of service I find the only thing I don't like is my inability to copy from a book . It may be that I'm doing something wrong . Everything works great ! It fits nicely on my computer station , is quiet , fast and easy to operate . I even figured out how to scan pictures to file and to email !! I'm just your everyday shopper/emailer/info researcher so this machine is everything I need .
Rating: Summary: Another vote against Brother. Review: I've experienced all the same problems as everyone else complaining here.
At first the machine worked wonderfully and I congratulated myself on my purchase. First sign of trouble is that it seems to go through the black ink cartridge very fast; and claims the cartridge is empty when I can pick it up and see it's about 70% full. A month or two later, it starts complaining that various color cartridges are empty --- and this after I have printed in total, since the machine arrived, perhaps ten pages of color. Then it starts complaining the new cartridges I buy for it are empty. Then it starts wanting to clean its heads twice a day. Finally it goes into brain-dead state where it claims it wants the cover opened, then on opening the cover it wants it closed. Since the machine was, at this point, about a month out of warranty, I was told that the cost to look at and fix it would be more than $100.
All in all I am totally burned out on both Brother and ink-jet printers as a whole, which are clearly a scam designed to get you to buy ink cartridges once a month. From now on it's good old laser for me --- and not a Brother laser.
Rating: Summary: Coming soon to a dumpster near you.. Mal-Functioning Crap Review: Like some of the other reviewers here, my MFC (Mal-Functioning Crapper) popped up with the "Machine Error 41.. Unplug Unit then call Brother" after just a few months of use. So I guess this is how it's going to work with Multi-Function printers, you pay $150 or so, and it lasts a year to 18 months, if you're lucky.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money Review: The Brother MFC 4420c, like the 5100 and 3100 models, is prone to the dreaded error 41 message. (Just look up Brother error 41 on any search engine and you will see what I mean) This error message most often occurs within a month of the warranty going out. If you manage to talk to someone at Brothers they will tell you the machine is "broke" Gee, thanks! and should be taken to a repair center where they will charge you more than the machine is worth to fix it! Stick with an HP, or a Canon, or just use a pencil for petes sake, just don't buy this piece of junk!
