Rating: Summary: You get nothing for nothing! Review: I used to have an older umax scanner when I had my MAC which I was prettty happy with. When i bought my Dell computer this particular scanner came free. I should have been suspicious. It has never been very good. The buttons never worked right from the start. As far as quality it has never been very good either although used to work somewhat better when I used the original software. Since upgrading to XP I can only use the drivers built into the new operating system which is somewhat limited. ( Umax is charging for updated software) One of the great drawbacks now is trying to scan from a magazine or similar material. Absolutley disgusting results...

Rating: Summary: keep it away Review: I would say that if you have other choice, don't buy this one! I bought a new computer from Dell last October, and this Astra 3400 scanner came with my Dell Dimension 8200, but I never get this work! There is always several "colorful stripes" showed at the image I scanned. Since I used to build up my own computer and upon my experience, I believe that's the problem of scanner itself. I've connectted with UMAX several times, but they can't slove it. They just asked me call for RMA, but they never pick up the phone. It's almost half year since I got this "new" scanner, but I never got any piece of picture scanned preporly. The UMAX customer service is really bad, and I've tired with all these stuff. If you do not wish to have those kind of hassles, just keep it away!
Rating: Summary: Umax software and drivers [disappoint]! Review: Like many others, I lost the original CD installation for drivers. UMAX has the gall to actually now charge for drivers and it's an outrageous price. Net affect: forces one to buy a different brand. Now, really, am I going to spend up to [money] on a driver for this scanner when I could put the money toward a good HP scanner or equal? And the VistaScan software which originally cames with the scanner is HORRIBLE! The worst scanner software on the market, far and away. Umax must be in terrible financial straits to use these tactics. Can you say, "Terrible customer support?"
Rating: Summary: Great...while it worked! Review: The Astra 3400 came bundled with my pc, printer, monitor, etc. It worked really well...for about 4 months. Now it goes through the motions of scanning - warms up, quick-scans to locate the image, then apparently scans. It declares a successful scan but A BLANK IMAGE shows up as the image. USB is working, has power, bulb works, but no image. Spent 30 minutes on long distance today w/out anyone answering. The unit is still under warranty but I think I will apply my return postage toward thr purchase of another make of scanner.
Rating: Summary: Does not work with Windows Me Review: The box says Windows 98/2000 or above. After spending 8 hours on installation problems and working with 3 tech support people, the 4th tech support person told me that the bundled Adobe Photoshop software does not work with Windows Me. They had spent a month trying to get it to work, but gave up. I had mentioned to each of the previous tech people that I was using Windows Me. They need to get the message out to their own staff and buyers that it doesn't work with Me.
Rating: Summary: a mind of its own Review: This device is not compatable with the Moac Os and when its desk accessory decides that it feels like starting up, there is no stopping it. It also took a week for their tech support to respond, I returned it after the first couple of days waiting.
Rating: Summary: Umax Astra 3400 USB scanner Review: This is a wonderful scanner. PROS: - USB interface - scans really fast (about 20-30 seconds!) - easy to use push button for scanning, copying, or custom (email, fax, or OCR). - around $90 - $20 rebate = $70. - very quietCONS: - custom button only works with certain software for emails. - OCR Presto software to use with the push-button is not accurate . I use the Omnipage that it came with for OCR which is very accurate but it can not be used with the push-button (at least I haven't figured out how to do it).
Rating: Summary: Great Quality Scans at a Low Price Review: This scanner did a great job for me for more than 2 years! It produced true color scans and would bring out the details of documents I scanned. It would display the watermark of a document as if it were a clear picture. I primarily used this for scanning in receipts and UPCs for rebate submissions. The speed is a bit slow as there is a long warm-up time. Also, nobody should buy the UMAX drivers! This worked fine with the built-in drivers of WinXP. Everything was detected and worked well under USB. Overall, a good budget scanner.
Rating: Summary: Looking for easy Scanner Review: This scanner is easy to use it, and also have many functions of programs about this scanner such as copy, scan.....it only need to push a button for each function. So even you are a beginner for scanner, you may enjoy to use it.
