Summary: A standard-bearer in consumer electronics
Review: Hi folks This is my first scanner, and I found it excellent in every way. First, the installation was very fast and easy. I have Windows Me, and unlike some others have suggested, it loaded successfully on the first attempt. There are different installation instructions for Me than there are for older versions -- make sure you follow the right set.

Jumping right in and scanning right away was absolutely easy. Use is very intuitive. Both the scanner's software and then the photo editing software open themselves up at the appropriate times. The photo editing software is PhotoStudio, which works a lot like Adobe PhotoShop. PhotoShop is ALSO included, by the way, but I find PhotoStudio totally sufficient for my needs.

Another feature that I LOVE is that the scanner requires NO POWER SOURCE OF ITS OWN! If you are like me, you will welcome the fact that there is but one cord coming out of this scanner -- the USB cord which runs for the scanner to your PC. This makes for a tidier desk, and also I personally have no spare space in my power strip.

The quality of the scans is wonderful. I am not an expert on the subject, but the scans look just as good as those I've made on scanners at Kinko's.

I highly recommend this unit. Wonderful in every way.

Summary: Bad for XP
Review: I am speaking from personal experience not based on the quality of the scanner. I used this scanner with a computer that using WIN XP and the installation was a great headache. The installation took 2 days just to come out the right way and when it was already installed the scanner will not work with WIN XP. I've 3 scanners before and this has been the most frustrating installation yet.

I tested the scanner with another computer that uses WIN 98 and installation was very easy.

In conclusion, if you have WIN XP and you try buy this scanner your doing so at your own risk.

Summary: Great Scanner!
Review: I bought this scanner a couple of days ago and I just recieved it today. The setup and installation was easy and simple, and the design was sleek. You can save desk space by using the stand to mount the scanner vertically. Under normal and low DPI, the scan takes a few seconds. However, when scanning at 1200 DPI, the highest setting, scanning can take quite a while. I started scanning about 10 minutes ago, and it is still scanning as I type. Fortunately, you rarely have to scan at such a high resolution. Overall, the Canon N1220U is a vast improvement over my old scanner; an Hp SaP ScanJet 5200C, which is about four times as large and ten times as fuzzy. I highly recommend you buy this product.

Summary: Outstanding scanner for a home user
Review: I can't say enough good things about this scanner. I received it today and had it out of the box and scanning within ten minutes. Setup is so easy--there's only one cord (USB) for both power and connecting to the PC so you don't even need to find an extra outlet to plug it into. It's very small and cool looking, and even comes with a stand so you can place it on its side if you want. It's got a nice package of software included. I like the "one-touch" scanning--you push the button on the scanner then click whether you want to make a copy, e-mail it, fax-it, or save it. I tried making a copy and it came out great. The OCR of the included software works wonderfully.

Only dislike--it comes with a quick-start guide but no real user manual for the software. I hate reading on-line help files and a user manual would be nice.

Summary: Excellent value for money
Review: I finally convinced my wife to let me spend over $100 on a scanner, and let me tell you, it was so worth it. This is an excellent scanner and it is incredibly easy to install and use. All you have to do is plug it into the USB port, insert the CD that comes with it, and the computer takes care of the rest. The main selling point for me was the size. It is the thinnest scanner I could find and as an added benefit it comes with an attachable stand wich lets it rest and scan on it side -- so it will fit in any small space on your desk. It is quite fast and the resolution and quality of the scans is very good. It even comes with a special lid which lets you scan thick items like books.

Summary: Cannon Scanner n122ou-usb driver review
Review: I found the cannon N1220U fun to work with work --- that is if I could get it to work. The graphics is very clear. I love the 1200 x2400 dpi clarity. However, I'm having trouble with the USB controller, I have a standard Intel 82801AB USB Universal Host Controller. When I called Cannon Tech Support--the tech support I talked to referred me back to HP (currently I have an HP computer). HP explained that cannon should provide the updated USB controller through the web site. I went to the web site--which was written in Japanese, which I was not able to access.

The reason I am writing this review is because despite the fact that I have found the cannon scanner a quality product--the consumer will not be able to take advantage because of the limited support they provide through technical support, as well as the web site. I feel that if a company releases a new product, new drivers should be included to enable compatibility with the user's computer.

Overall, I give the cannon a rating of 3-mostly due to the fact that the service support provided in my experience was not as good as the product. I feel that both product quality and technical support should be considered when reviewing scanners or any other peripheral device. For future buyers out there, if your computer is slightly outdated, my advice is to be sure that the device you buy is compatible and if a new driver can be access via the web site. Otherwise, be ready for a big headache or just return the product.

Summary: Simply LOVE this scanner!
Review: I got this scanner from my wife as a X-mas present (thanks Honey!). The "out-of-the-box" experience with this scanner is really impressive. One cable connected - software installed - and that's it! The quality of the scans is icredible. Even at just 150 dpi I get extremely good results. (...) I am using Windows ME and have absolutely NO problems with the scanner. My advice - GET IT - YOU'LL LOVE IT!

Summary: Excellent choice for portable scanning
Review: I have a Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series which has two USB ports. I asked for and got the N1220U for Christmas in 2000. So far it's been great. I won't rehash much of what others have said, only to add that the USB-powered design allows you to use it on a laptop while running on batteries. In fact, to try it out, I loaded the drivers from the Canon website into my PowerBook and took it to a retail store to do a scan right there. Plus, it's dimensions are such that I can fit it in my laptop bag with the laptop.

The only minor qualm is the manual lock switch -- it would be nice to have this automatic (but probably at the expense of consuming more power).

By the way, the USB drivers for Macintosh work great. I primarily use the plug-in with the [separately available] shareware program GraphicConverter but the scanner can also be used with the provided software and works in Adobe PhotoShop.

I just wish I had these cool toys when I was in college.

Summary: BEST SCANNER I EVER HAD!
Review: I have owned four scanners, three of which were HP top of the line. I bought this after seeing it in action at a friend's house and was sold. I had NO trouble setting it up on my new COMPAQ. In fact I was scanning in about five minutes. I have been scanning photos for two weeks now and I have to tell you that they are absolutely beautiful! I scan at 75 dpi for email pics etc., and unless the original is not too good, I have been using 350 dpi for 4X6 pictures. Last night I tried a lousy original that I had to crop and fix up, and printed it at 400. It is like a studio original! I love it for copies also - so fast and so clear! THIS IS THE BEST SCANNER EVER! I don't know why others have had so many problems installing.....mine went according to the directions.
