Rating: Summary: The greatest little scanner Review: I bought this to take to college with me because of the reviews I read. I haven't gone to colleg yet but I already use it a lot. The lid lifts up to fit larger books, the scans are high quality (almost publication quality for artwork, etc.) It fits right in my laptop case because its so thin and about the same size as my laptop. I love it and would recomend for any college student to take to the library and avoid paying copying costs. Also since it doesn't require outside power its fantastic and it works great with my iBook computer. Thanks canon for a cheap, highquality, small, easy to use scanner!
Rating: Summary: Great Scanner for the price Review: I debated buying this scanner for 2 weeks. I read all of the reviews over and over and finally decided that I just couldn't pass up such an economically priced scanner and still sleep at night. It made me sort of nervous what with the mixed reviews and several complaints of driver problems. I have the worst luck in the world, and if there is any possibility of things going out of whack- it will in all likelihood happen to me.I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. The price is more than reasonable and set up was a breeze. I was scanning within 5 minutes and have no complaints with the quality of them. I generally only use my scanner to upload pics to online photo albums for family and friends to view- so my requirements aren't as high as someone using in this in any sort of professional capacity. Nonetheless, I think they look great. The lack of a power cord and the ability to both store and use this already compact scanner on its side are just more bonuses. I honestly can't think of 1 bad thing to say about this scanner. Definitely worth the tiny price tag in my opinion!
Rating: Summary: Light and easy with decent results Review: I have bought several of these units for work as well as a similar model for my father so I decided to grab one for myself. I needed to replace an old legal size SCSI scanner and I like this model's tiny size, light weight and lack of the need for an AC adaptor. It pulls its juice through the USB cable so you need to plug it directly into the PC or a powered hub. The scanning software works well with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and for an old hand gives me just about all the flexibility I need. It is not the sharpest of scanners and is much happier scanning line art and text than photos. I find myself spending more time tweaking photos in PS than I do with other scanners but for the price...
Rating: Summary: Great Scanner for an awesome price! Review: The only scanner I've had for the past several years was a Mustek 600 scanner that was originally purchased for our 486 back in the day, but we lost the AC adapter way back. We did alright without a scanner for a while, but we finally deduced a new one would be nice to have. I bought this scanner and immidiately began hooking it up to my HP P2 450. I installed the software first, which took a little longer than I expected, but let you choose what you wanted to install, which was nice. I then restarted and plugged in the USB. There is no power cord because power is received throught the USB cable. Next, I found a picture, stck it in the scanner, opened the included PhotoStudio 5, setup the program for the scanner, the scanber calibrated itself within a minute, then I was able to preview, crop, and scan the picture. I started at the standard 300 dpi and it came out perfect, almost as good as the original that was professionally done. I then tried it at 600 dpi, and it was even better. And you guessed it, 1200 dpi looked picture perfect. (no pun intended) With this economicly minded scanner, 1200 dpi is the max, but unless you want to blow it up about 50 times, it's original size, there is no need to have anything hihger. PhotoStudio 5 can save in several different formats including the standard Bitmap and Jpeg. To give you an idea, The 4X6 photo that was scanned at 300 dpi and saved at 100% quality as a JPEG was only about 800KB. When scanning, there is no warm up time, and it runs fairly quickly, but the higher the dpi, the longer it takes. Of corse I wanted to check text decoding, so I found a magazine with several formats of text on one page, scanned it, and used the included software to decode it, and it did not make one error. When I used a friends scanner, there were many errors, but there was not one on this. My only dissapointment is it does not pick up accents when scanning spanish, it just ends up as a random letter. All-in-all, the included software is fairly good; the scanner itself is compact, speedy, power efficent, well designed, and takes good scans; and it all comes in a nice package. So if you need a scanner for identifing and fileing english text, scanning and saving photos in compressed files at no more than 1200 dpi, or just making coppies, and you don't want to spend a lot this scanner is for you.
Rating: Summary: Compact - generally a godo deal. Review: Canon generally makes good product. However, the documentation for software is weak. Be prepared to spend some time to feel your way around the packaged software. OmniPage SE works fairly well. The bundled software and size of this scanner makes it a gem. As someone else said, you could even bring it into a library. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Handy Little Device Review: I'm a full-time student, and wanted a simple to use, compact, rugged and light-weight portable scanner that would run from my Laptop's battery out of the USB port. (I planned to use it in the library, to save on note taking, and also trees!) Anyway, I got exactly what I wanted, my only complaint is that I keep forgetting to unlock the carriage, this is more anoying than anything so far, but an on-screen prompt or warning would be handy for future models. So far it is going like a champ, and has exceeded all of my requirements.
Rating: Summary: Simple and fast. Review: I just got this scanner and had it working in about 10 minutes from taking it out of the box. It scans BW images at great resolution, magazines look pretty good too. Photographs come out about 90% of perfect.
One neat thing - this scanner comes with a stand to position it vertically, thus saving you precious desk space. It is powered via USB, no AC adapter needed. You can scan single-sheet documents and books as the lid lifts up as to not break the spines of your books.
The software this scanner comes with is pretty complete and works on the first try (at least on WinXP), however, as always, I'd recommend a more robust photo imaging program, e.g. Adobe PhotoShop.
The price is right and the quality is great. What a great product!
Rating: Summary: Works great... Review: If you want an affordable scanner buy it. I had no problems hooking it up & going straight for scanning.
Rating: Summary: Beware of the TwainDrivers Review: "This application has failed to start because of NUVTwain.DLL was not found. Re-instaling the application may fix it". It MAY. It did not. Unless you want to spend a futile evening over it, forget this nicely priced scanner. It is not worth your toil. You will end up having to e-mail the manufacturer as it is a different subject from the software provider and they do not communicate well. Bought today, going to return as fast as possible. NO way.
Rating: Summary: Factory Default settings are OFF!! Review: Installation went breeze without a hitch. (Compaq laptop WinXP). I put in photograph in the scanner for my very first scan. It came out really grainy. pulled out my original paper... nothing wrong with the photo. hmm...did several other scan with different resolution. same result(grainy). I started thinking maybe it's cheap scanner limitation. I was considering if I should return it. than I tried scan in "COLOR(Magazine)" to see how it's different from "COLOR(Photo)". Grain problems GONE!. Yippy! gotten warning about file size being created more than 100Meg. so I lowered scanning resolution to 150dpi and changed file type to JPG. Apparently JPG compresses image way too much! causes digital artifacts to appear all around the images. (if you use photoshop you know JPG comes with 12 scale compression option. too bad it's not here with canoscan software) so here are my settings and it should be factory default in my opinion because grainy "COLOR(photo)" at 300dpi doesn't do any good to anybody.. plus settings below scans quieter and scans just as fast. COLOR(Magazine) 150dpi BMP I hope CANON release newer software that let you choose JPG compression with adjustable compression level.
