Summary: are you as tired of digital as I am?
Review: ...then go back to your roots young man (and woman). This camera won't set you back very much, and does absolutely everything. You'll NOT be able to use all the features you USED to pay $[money] for. The lenses are great and automatic. The 28-105 is just superb. And being 28mm, you actually get the whole room, etc. instead of today's standard 35-39mm which is bogus. This is a spectacular value in a camera. Don't be fooled by the tv ads of 'rebel's', etc., this is the easiest, most powerful, lightest, best built, most versatile 35 SLR made today. Forget digital; it's time has not yet come. Put some money in good film and watch how pleased you'll be.

Summary: Tough decision, but...
Review: I agonized over which SLR to buy. In the end this camera was just too loaded for the price to pass up. I was also swayed by its old school body. I'm taking about 2 rolls a day and I'm thrilled with the results (sorry digital fans, but I'll take this camera and a good scanner any day). A great accessory has been a wide-angle lens for shooting my kids up close - lots of fun and comical distortion when the film comes back. Amazon shipped it fast and had a very competitive price for a US product. I'm just sorry it took me so long to replace my "top-of-the-line" point and shoot.

Summary: The Ideal Beginner Camera
Review: I am a 15-year old interested in photography. I spent most of my picture-taking years with either a Kodak Advantix or a disposable camera.
Finally, when I took photography seriously enough, my parents purchased the Minolta Maxxum 5. We did not really know much about cameras at the time, but now about 6 months later, I know this was the right choice.
The biggest thing I hated about Advantix cameras was that it took nearly 2 or so seconds to take a picture. Those who take pictures a lot can probably understand how fustrating this can be. The Maxxum 5 can take up to 3 frames per second.
Another thing I was upset about was the zoom. The Advantix cameras have a set zoom and that's it. With SLR cameras you can buy new lenses, though a bit pricy, to get what you want. The lens this package comes with is the 28-80. This is VERY similar to what my Advantix was. (NOTE: For those who wish to have more zoom should as well purchase a 70-300mm lens) I was disappointed I didn't have more zoom but enjoyed the fact I had a new camera to play with...so many features!
From the different modes, including Sports, Potrait, Landscape, Closeup, and Night time, to multiple photos on one frame. This camera offers more than it's size tells!
This little bugger is very light as well. The weight will increase with the larger lens, so you don't want a heavy camera body.
Auto and manual focus were very easy to figure out, as well as changing lenses. Those used to Advantix cameras and not those which use 35mm film will spend a LITTLE bit of time figuring out how to insert a roll of film. Doesn't take long, and soon you'll be changing film so quickly, no one near you even notices!
To this day, I still haven't learned every feature this camera offers. It's a bit hard to memorize the way to prepare some of these features, but that's why you keep your little manual with you.
Perfect for beginners in photography, including teenagers.

Summary: Minolta Maxxum 5 could be trouble
Review: I bought this camera the Date model from Tri State Cameras 2 months ago. I ran 2 rolls of film through it and every thing went fine. All of a sudden the next 6 rolls did not expose the film at all. I found out the shutter louvers malfunctioned. Lost my whole vacation pictures. Then I thought I found out the probluem and the date back malfunctioned. I had a nice yellow beam of light accross the bottom of all my shots except the last picture on the roll. This was the next 5 rolls. Sent back to Minolta for warrentie service a week ago. I have not heard anything yet. I am very disapointed in this new Minolta camera!
Buy a Canon or a Nikon.

Summary: A very nice camera
Review: I just bought this camera, and it is my first SLR. I find that it's extrememly easy to use right out of the box, but it is feature laden enough to keep me busy for a long time.

Summary: Great Camera
Review: I love this camera - all the features you could want, reliably great pictures. Only two minor beefs - one, the autofocus is stupid. It sometimes doesn't register that it is focused, and will not allow the photo to be taken - switching to manual focus solves this. Two, I'd prefer a faster max shutter speed - I've been limited a few times by the max 1/2000 second speed. I've taken great pictures witht his camera, and it has survived handily in environments from the Sahara desert to the Amazon Jungle.

Summary: Guaranteed to make you have fun
Review: I own a Maxxum, but older, and I only can say, awsome.
Automatic features that make this camera a pro with just the touch of a button.
I specially like to use it with a iso400 films.

Summary: Good camera!
Review: I really like this camera. This is my first auto focus SLR. It's small and light. You can set it for automatic everything or choose the settings manually. The pop up flash is great. The only problem is that some of the features are confusing to figure out how to work. But overall I would recommend it.

Summary: Get some sleep, this one is a sure thing
Review: I researched the heck out of SLR camera's before making this purchase. First, I must say that the reviews here were very helpful so I ultimately made the purchase through Amazon. Second, I am thrilled with the camera and all its features. In comparing the Maxxum 5 with the competition, I was a bit worried that I was missing something obvious since it clearly has a superior price point in relation to the features offered. But in the end, it was the superficial that swayed me: the Maxxum 5 absolutely blows the competition away with its great look, feel, and sturdy compact size. Pickup "Understanding Exposure" as well to supplement the minimalist owners manual.

Summary: I am very happy with this purchase.
Review: I reviewed several different options before I bought this camera and I have to say I made the right choice.
Lightweight, takes great shots and has more options than I'll every use. In fact if I has one critical comment is that there are so many options and remembering how to get to each is a tad confusing. I'm sure with time all will be fine.
Otherwise I love this camera. My first roll was of friends in a marathon and I got some spectacular action shots. Not to mention some great portrait shots on the same trip.
A great camera to make that next step beyond the point and shoot. I am looking forward to how my photography improves with the Maxxum 5.
