Rating: Summary: More than met my expectations Review: This camera came one week after I ordered it. It came with instructions and a strap. The first roll I took I was very satisfied with. I would definetly order from Johnnys again.
Rating: Summary: great camera! Review: This camera is excellent. I bought it with a couple of doubts because of reviews. However, I have been very happy with how my pictures have turned out. They are clear, bright, and fun to look at. Perfect for the point and shoot camera person. :-)
Rating: Summary: Good when it works Review: I purchased the Zoom 80 upon the birth of my now 2-yr old daughter. We immediately had problems with the film not loading. The store convinced me that I was not feeding it in properly. Needless to say it often took me 2 or more times to do this simple task. I then had problems with the camera not turning on all the time, requiring that I open & close the cover several times until it did turn on. Of course, when I took it back to the store it worked. This was a recurring problem during its short life. On the positive side, the pictures were generally sharp. The best features of the camera were its compactness & clamshell cover. However, don't let the "armored" case fool you. I just took the camera in to a repair shop where it was declared dead. The camera circuit board was damaged and would be too costly to replace. The repairman said that his guess was that it was knocked around too much. Granted, it may have been handled roughly at times but it was never dropped.
Rating: Summary: a rare disappointment from olympus! Review: I have always owned olympus cameras, and they have never caused me trouble. So I was extremely excited to try out the Epic Zoom 80. I am sorry to say it left me EXTREMELY disappointed. The lens cover mechanism broke off of my camera, like has happened to many owners, according to other reviews. The case wasn't opened too quickly or too hard - I have always used Olympus Stylus, so I am very familiar with opening the clamshell case. It is simply poorly constructed.Since then, it has been extremely difficult to take a photo without having the lens retract accidently while pressing down on the shutter. Because of that, pictures need to be attempted 3-4 times before actually getting taken, making any sort of spontaneous shot impossible to take. While the photos I have taken have turned out nicely, I have since given up on taking pictures with the Stylus Epic 80 - it was just too frustrating. I just bought the non-zoom Stylus as a welcomed replacement. If you want a dependable camera that takes excellent pictures, stick with the standard Olympus Stylus Epic.
Rating: Summary: Tough, Durable, and Good Pics! Review: I used this camera on a 408 mile hike from Lake Tahoe to Mt Whitney and all my pictures turned out great. On top of that, I passed 2 other people who were unrelated who both claimed to have dropped their Olympus Stylus into streams. They both said that the camera continued working even after being submerged in water briefly. In addition, when I arrived on the summit of Whitney, there were two professional photographers up there who had carried like 50lbs of photography gear. They both said that they owned Olympus Stylus cameras for carrying in their cars and spur-of-the-moment occasions. They said they chose that camera because of the good optics that Olympus makes. We have retired our stylus in favor of a new Olympus Camedia 3040 zoom, but we still use the Stylus when we need two cameras. It still takes good pics.
Rating: Summary: Replacing 8-yr-old Olympus Infinity Stylus - lens cover Review: I have read the posted comments on the newer Olympus Stylus cameras and it seems that the door mechanism covering the lens is the greatest concern. My 8-year-old camera zoomed to 70 mm and had difficulties only after 6-7 years of use. The motor that raises the flash was the first to go. It has been suggested to me that the alignment of the lens cover may be off, causing the motor that enables the lens to malfunction. Perhaps a tune-up could have prevented this problem, but the fee to look at the camera (not to fix it) costs more than a new camera by the same manufacturer and with greater zoom capability. Certainly, this was an excellent camera for 8 years. My pictures have turned out very well, probably due to the great viewfinder (which captures almost all of the shot), a variety of flash options, and whatever lens features make Olympus a favored brand. In my search for a new camera, I have considered Canon and Minolta, which offer well-rated 35-mm zoom cameras at reasonable prices. If I leave Olympus, I will miss the small size, styling, and excellent features. I have not yet made a choice, but I find myself considering whether the tiny lens covers of the other brands will protect those cameras and last any longer than the Olympus. After all, my Olympus Stylus did last longer than expected....
Rating: Summary: Good design, poor execution Review: Great camera as long as it works. The lense cover slide broke after about a year. I got it fixed and it broke again after 6 months
Rating: Summary: Great- But mechinism broke after a year or two. Review: This is a great camera, and I would buy it again, and don't mind paying the repair costs, but would have hoped the problem never happened. I was in a foreign country, when for the first time and only time I experienced a problem. The lens cover mechinism, which is the pull back type, broke, after it was stressed from being bumped around in packs, not very much abuse, but some. The lens cover was pulled too far back, because the peice that was supposed to hold it from going to far back broke off. This made it so the camera would not turn on, and therefore not take pictures. Even so, I still recomend this camera, and have had other olympus cameras, the oldest being a 8+ year old camera, whcih is perfect. 3 Stars for this, only because of the failure. Note: This aperently has happened to more then one other reviewer's camera.
Rating: Summary: Good Camera But Delicate Lense Mechanism Review: Camera is compact and takes good pictures. But the lesne mechanism is very delicate and complicated. You need to slide the lense barrier for the lense and the flash to extend. Within 1.5 years, our camera's lense mechnaism broke down. Now the lense does not extend out and camera does not take pictures.
Rating: Summary: great buy! Review: i'd been lookin for a decent bargain on a 35 mm camera with zoom for my vacation. i never had a camera of my own,and never really took pictures (apart form when a freind asks you to take a picture of them using there camera at some obscure place..lol).. it came down to this and the canon sureshot 85.. something about this one, however got me hooked.(i think it was the classy body.. ha ha) but honestly .. this camera makes me WANT to take pictures..it's so simple and such a joy to use.. when i developed my first roll, the attendant asked if i was into photography semi pro or pro ,becasue the shots were really excellent(of course it's the camera ,film and locations..lol..)sure,you're gonna take some shots that don;t come out to right.. sure the light may be bad.. but know your limits, and your camera's..with the six flash modes, and DX coded film(to adjust the shutter speed)..just read the manual for what flash mode wortks for what situation, and which speed film(100,200, 800 etc) will work for what type of lighting.. and take lots of pictures. the camera will harldy (if ever ) let you down
