Summary: The ONLY digital camera to buy!
Review: I looked at all of the cameras on the market before buying the FD-88. I've owned it for about 6 months and couldn't be happier. It takes individual photos and will record about 2 minutes of MPEG video -- all stored on floppies. You can take pics and simply remove the disk and insert another. Pictures can easily be passed to a friend. It is much easier then downloading to a PC.Picture quality is excellent and the 16x zoom gives EXTREME CLOSE-UPS when desired. There is a reason SONY owned >70% of the digital camera market. If you're looking for the best, look no further...this is your camera!

Summary: A Puertorrican's opinion
Review: I never thoguht I could have a digital camera that could have such great resolution. I can print my pictures in a 4 by 6 photo paper and my friends would have never thoguht that I did that in a my digital camera. I love its long-battery life, you can pick teh resolution type. And also you can store up to 15 second MPEG video with audio. It has an excellent zoom capability, great resolution, and with its e-mail option all you have to do is just put in the attachment and that is it. And of course there is the use of diskette, there are no cables all you have to do is insert the diskette, open it in any program, EVEN PAINT!and you have your picture. I am completely satisfied, and I would recommend it as a great investment, along with all other accesories that are great for add-ons.

Summary: Great camera, But Doesn't quite make it! MVC 73
Review: I purchased the 73 and had fun for about 24 hours.I became a little disappointed because I wanted clear quality in the printing and the pictures just were not clear. I also felt that the camera needed a focus button of some sort. The camera is great, but I think you will find that it is not worth what they are asking for the camera. Unfortunately, I will pay more to receive the quality I want. I only bought the Sony because it is the simplest to maneuver. My neices and nephews were able to handle the camera in a few minutes, and print their own pictures. I am trading it in for a newer model with more features, maybe the 88.

Summary: A great versatile and easy to use Digital Camera
Review: I started looking at digital cameras when I got interested in posting pictures on the web or sending them via e-mail to family members in other states. There are both cheaper cameras and cameras with greater resolution avaiable, but for flexibility, ease of use, and convenience nothing tops the Sony Mavica series. I bought the MVC-D88 because it had a range of resolutions (from 640 x 480 to 1,280 x 960), supported a number of file formats including MPEG short film files, had a number of special effects options and a good zoom feature (8x optical and 16x digital zoom). I have never reqretted the buy. The camera feels good to hold, the LCD menu options are clear and intuitive, it is easy to focus and creates excellent images even under very low light conditions. The great thing, of course, is what made me want one in the first place - the Sony Mavica is the only digital camera on the market that writes directly to a floppy disk. The flexibility that gives one to be independent of a particualr computer with special cables and software for uploading images is alone worth the extra that one pays. There are a couple of limitations that should be pointed out. The built in flash has no red eye reduction, so a disproportionate number of flash portraits have some red eye reflection that must be corrected with software editing. Also, there is no optical viewfinder and one must frame the picture using the 2.5 inch LCD color monitor on the back of the camera. This is easy to use indoors, but in any direct sunlight it becomes very difficult to see, so I have found myself reshooting a lot of outdoor images to get them framed correctly. Still, those are small disadvantages compared to everything that Sony has done right with this camera. I highly recommend the Mavica to anyone interested in digital photography primarily for email or internet purposes. A great product.

Summary: Easy to use; Quality Camera
Review: I tried out the Mavica 73 and although I found it great to use for internet photos (and GREAT ZOOM), I decided on the FD-88 for the resolution. I'm glad I made the switch because the short video capability and sound make this camera fun! SONY KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Only suggestion I would have to Sony is to someday have a camera that would use ZIP disks, although floppies are very convenient! I CONSIDER THIS A "SMALL" CAMERA after having a medium format and carrying around 35mm cameras with large lenses. I'm sticking with Sony and the floppy disks!

Review: i tryed the fd-73 with sheer disappointment..go the extra mile and buy the fd-88..it's even has better resolution then big-brother fd-91 but lack's the 14x optical zoom..but it's worth it...ps pick up a np-f550 battery for the spare power..it whip's

Summary: A little hesitant at first, but worth it in the end.
Review: I was a little hesitant to purchase this model, because every review I read about it mentioned the bulky size. I decided to compromise on the size to get the feature of being able to store the pictures directly onto floppy disk. To my surprise, the size did not bother me at all, and the camera is actually lighter than I expected. The features of the camera are really great, and the different image size and quality settings allow for a lot of versatility. I love the fact that I don't need any cables or special equipment to download to my computer. I just pop in the floppy disk and it's ready to view or send. I only have two criticisms of this camera, which prevented me from giving it a perfect score: First, the instruction manual is not very clear, and left a lot of questions in my mind. It seems that it was translated hastily into English by a non-native speaker. Second, the e-mail function, which stores the same picture onto disk twice, one regular size and the other compressed for sending through e-mail, is a great function. However, the quality of the compressed e-mail picture is not very good. One helpful hint: If you are going to send your pictures over the internet to your friends, take a regular picture (don't use the e-mail function) and make sure to use a program like NetZip to compress the information first before sending. If you don't, your friends will hate you for making them wait so long to download so much information!

Summary: MVC-FD88 Review from Arlington, Virginia
Review: It's a good camera. We're pleased with most features of the camera except for the fact that every picture taken with the flash shows a serious red-eye problem. It doesn't matter from which angle the picture is taken from, the eyes appear very red (worse than any camera I've seen). We also used the FD-91 and it did not appear to have this problem.

Summary: What more, frankly, can one ask for?
Review: Okay, so occasionally you have to fiddle with the flash or the closeups.
That is a small price to pay considering that A: you don't have to go the store to get your pictures developed (you're saving about $8 per roll right there, let alone FILM costs!).
B: NO HOOKUPS! How groovy is that!
You pop your floppy in --and floppies are cheap-- (do make sure it's formatted right, you can do that from the camera) take your pictures and go.
You can zoom all over the place, adjust for taking pictures indoors and outdoors, view all your pictures in a gallery, and so much more...
I just discovered the multiple delete option, while in the gallery, you can select different pictures and delete however many you want at once.
Color's good. Resolution is good. Lens protector has its own tether, and a shoulder strap has come in more handy than I can say. So, it's big and clunky, and you should have a backup battery. Doesn't take too terribly long to charge anyway!
Has definitely paid for itself. :-)

Summary: Worth the price!
Review: The last roll of film I developed spanned four YEARS! Why? Because I hate wasting $$$ to develop twenty four photos when I'm lucky to really like one or two. PROBLEM SOLVED with the Mavica. I tried to get a good shot of a two-year-old. Got the back of her head twice - and deleted those - before getting the effect I wanted. Showed friends immediately on TV, then e-mailed to her parents so they can print or just save on disk. It's great fun and now I take my camera everywhere. No more lost memories. No more bulky photo albums. Color and clarity is wonderful; floppy disk storage is easy, familiar, and inexpensive. An idea: leave space on the floppy disk for a Word file describing each photo (who, what, where, when, etc.) Spend $$$ on camera quality, not storage capacity. Instruction booklet stinks but camera is so easy to use you don't need instructions. Truly. Still need to figure out a few things about digital imaging in general... Biggest question is this: Which setting is best for photo-quality 4x6 prints? I don't want to use the highest setting (and save fewer photos per disk) if I don't have to for this size print. I'm sure experience will answer this question and, unlike regular cameras, nothing is lost while experimenting. I will never regret buying this camera!
