Summary: 5000 Photos Later
Review: I've taken over 5000 photographs with this camera since buying it a couple of years ago, and I can't say enough good about it. No problems, just outstanding images from a tough, quality camera. I've taken many macros, mostly at 3 cm or less, and the resulting digital images have been simply super. I'd buy this camera again in a heartbeat, and as a result of my experience with the 950 my next digital camera will also be a Nikon.

Summary: A wonderful digital camera!
Review: This camera takes excellent quality digital pictures and comes with the Nikonview software which enables you to make basic edits on the pictures on your computer. It is fairly easy to use and the compact flash uploads into the computer either via a reader or directly from the camera. I have seen some digital pictures which made me wonder why you would bother, the quality was so poor. This camera is the best I have seen and I would highly recommend it.

Summary: Coolpix a Winner
Review: This is my first digital camera, and have had if for a year. Takes great pictures in the ~500 KB file size range using JPEG compression in 1200 X 1600 mode. I've printed them on an HP 840 ink jet with glossy paper and 8 X 10 is magnificent!Internal flash is weakness, but I bought external flash and bracket and works quite well. I see no reason to buy more mega pixels which use more space on card. Optics are great too. I may buy another for my son before this is discontinued since it is an older model.

Summary: Excellent Camera, Especially for Close-ups!
Review: I bought this camera when I saw a demo of its close-up capabilities. A freehand photo of a watch dial came out so crystal-clear and clean, I had to get one for myself! If you want an excellent all around camera, or especially if you want to sell items on ..., this is a fantastic camera. However, you should invest more memory and a Flash Memory reader (I bought a 128 mb card here at ... for ... after rebates, and I'm glad I did!).

Summary: Coolpix 950
Review: I have had both the Coolpix 800 and the Coolpix 950. Ilike the 900 better but it has some of the same weaknesses. My peeves first; 1. It powers up a full telephoto. I'd rather it stayed at wide angle. For Indoor shots, I'm constantly zooming out after power up to get a full width shot. This is a pain, especially given peeve #2. 2. The flash performs well at wide angle but significantly underexposes when the lens is zoomed to telephoto. This is true regardless of distance. An object 15 feet away will be nicely exposed at wide angle but underexposed if you zoom to telephoto. Now my likes: 1. Great image quality and good color fidelity 2. The swivel head is increadibly useful. Hold the camera over your head when in a crowd and you can take great pictures without heads in the way. Hold it a waist level and you can handhold low light shots very easily. In both cases you can swivel the head so you can see the screen easily. 3. Great low light performance. Tripod mounted it takes great star shots at 8 second shutter speed and can capture down to 6 magnitude stars.... just as good as the human eye. 4. Magnesium body is better than plastic. Coolpix 990 went back to plastic. All in all, I'm very happy. Peeves are significant if you take indoor shots a lot.

Summary: CoolPix 950 - a great buy!!!
Review: I've had the CoolPix 950 for several months. I did quite a lot of research prior to the purchase and it paid off, this is a great camera. The other reviews cover all the pros and cons quite well so I'll put a different spin with my problems. No problems with the camera or performance, the camera does exactly what it is supposed to do. Most folks problems seem to be mismatched expectations or not understanding the technology. My issues, and I can't seem to find help anywhere, so if anyone has advice, I'd appreciate it: 1. Learning the real differences between all the combinations of Size and Quality. I purchased Corel Photo-Paint 9 Digital Camera Edition for not to much $$$ and like it a lot but the size, resolution, compression, quality, etc. choices just blow me away. I have found a lot of people with digital cameras but who really don't understand this part of the technology and Nikon's manuals and reference guides do not really help the digital novice. I learned my photography over 30 years ago before automatic cameras of any kind existed and I still struggle with understanding the digital formats. I have 2 books on order from Amazon that I hope will educate me. 2. Nikon external flashes are too expensive. Has anyone found a third-party flash that works well with this camera? All in all a wonderful camera and Amazon has the best prices and service. E-mail me at info@mainelywood.com if you have questions or info I could use. I added rechargeable batteries, the filters, a card reader, and a 96 mb CompactFlash card from SanDisk (called Nikon, manual says only up to 64mb but Nikon has since tested Lexar and SanDisk of larger capacities and approves them). I found Nikon tech service to be be very good, guess it depends on who you get.

Summary: Workhorse Digital Camera
Review: I've had my Coolpix 950 for 9 months now and I have been very pleased with the camera. There are a few annoyances about the camera: 1. The menu interface can sometimes be a bit odd, but once you figure out its logic, it works fine. 2. The 8 MB card that it comes with is too small if you plan to shoot in 1600x1200 resolutions. 3. If you mount the camera on a tripod, the card reader and battery compartment are not accessible, forcing you to take the camera off the mount to change cards or batteries. 4. The included manual is missing the last half of the text, although everything is in the PDF manual on the included CD. Those things aside, I really love this camera. It produces very good results and gives me the right amount of control when I need it. The wide-angle and telephoto lenses are great since they attach directly, without having to use a converter or step-down ring. If you want to shoot panorama images for QuickTime VR, this camera with the wide-angle lens works beautifully in conjunction with the Kaidan KIWI 900/950 tripod head. ... Long exposure shots are simple to do as well as other experimentation. It also has a B&W mode which actually produces very nice results, often overlooked in digital cameras. Nikon even makes a set of four filters specifically for the Coolpix cameras which are well worth it from a creative standpoint. The newer Coolpix 990 uses the same optics but with a larger CCD element. But if you are on a limited budget but you want a "pro-sumer" digital camera, you can get a 950 with a couple of lenses and an extra memory card ... fairly easily. If you just want the camera, plan on getting either a 32 or 64 MB card (Lexar or SanDisk) right from the start and keep the 8MB card handy in case you run out of space and need a few more shots. Almost a year after first searching for a digital camera, I would still buy either the 950 or 990 in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

Summary: Love the camera but hate the tech support
Review: I bought the camera about 3 months ago and everything was great. I previously owned a Nikon SLR and had no doubt this was going to be a quality product. The 880 was too small for my husband's big hands and the 990 was little more camera than we needed. Unfortunately after two months of use, all the photos taken in automatic mode were underexposed. I called Nikon tech support and they walked me through a couple of things to try but nothing worked. I found the tech support people to be undertrained and I knew more about the camera than some of them (pretty bad considering you drill down to the specific "Coolpix 950 support" through the automated phone menu). One support person blamed the 64MB Viking compact flash card on my problems, saying they only support Lexar (brand that comes with the camera) or SanDisk, and that Viking "is known to cause problems" with the Coolpix 950! I have read many reviews and never heard of this problem! I called Viking and they had no knowledge of any incompatability with the 950. Eventually Nikon replaced the strobe light under warranty but it's still got the same underexposure problem. To their credit, Nikon paid for my camera to be returned to them for a second time. I am waiting to receive my camera back. I still like Nikon unfortunately all the hospital pictures when I gave birth to my son are now sitting on my hard drive and every photo is underexposed.
