Summary: Great buy
Review: This camera has the best lens you can get for the price. I bought it for a six month trip through the South Pacific and I kept finding new features the more I used it. It works just as well as any higher priced brand name model. It takes pictures that look nice on a computer screen, but it doesn't have the high resolution that a still digital camera does. I have no regrets buying this product!

Summary: 15 Tapes and NP
Review: I have had no problems with this camera, I use it A LOT at least 15 tapes maybe a lot more. Also lots of playback and editing. I have used all sorts of tape brands and I always have a tape ready to go sitting inside it. Wind can be a bit of a problem at times, and in low light the picture really [is bad].... But I have really abused this machine, left it switched on for almost a week one time, i have used it at the beach, my son has even tried to eat it.
All I can say is in the 18 months I have owned it, My sharp has never let me down. when it dies it will have earned its keep.

Summary: Tape entangling problem
Review: I bought this one and after just a month of use ran into the famous tape getting stuck problem. Amazon was courteous to take it back. This does have some high end features, but these are of no use if there is problem with the basics. Too often companies get swayed by offering features when the base has problems. I was using TDK high quality tapes, so tape quality was not a issue.

Summary: worked great, for 90 days!
Review: I purchased this camcorder about four months ago and it worked great right out of the box. however the fifth time I went to record with it the image came out pixilated. I used the recomended tapes and followed all instructions. I can still play the first couple of tapes i made and they come out fine, however, every time I record now I get a pixilated image. It isn't worth recording if it comes out like ...!!!
So I called sharp, and after 45 minutes on the phone I was finally able to get the number to a service station. The nearest one is in NY. I live in SD. When I called them they told me that parts are still under warenty but the labor is not. They also said that no matter what the problem is it will cost me ...and ... for shiping. I ONLY PAID ...FOR THE CAMERA. So if I do get it fixed, whos to say it doesnt have the same problem four months further down the road. If it does then I will have spent ...on a camera that I have used less than a year!!My advice is to forget about buying this Sharp ..., and get somthing that will last!!!!!!

Summary: Beware of the red X
Review: This camera is such a shame. It's one of the few (if not the only) cameras with 3 separate RCA jacks (for 1 video & 2 audio channels), not the ridiculous "mini-jack" most consumer mini-DV cameras come with. Lots of manual controls. Bargain price. What is the shame? It eats tapes. The machine randomly stops, then displays a red X with the words "eject cassette." Beware if you don't heed the warning. I didn't, and extracted mini-DV spaghetti from my camera. I rewound the tape manually, but now a spot is permanently marked on the tape. Every time I play that tape, the machine remembers to tell me to "eject cassette" at the same point on that cassette every time it plays. I tested with a new tape, different brands, etc., and sure enough, sooner or later, this problem re-surfaced on each test tape. If you got a rebate with your camera, this is where it's going. Unless you like to stop your tapes at random intervals and manually fast forward a few seconds of tape; or you plan to take advantage of the warranty and send in the camera for repair right when you get it... then get a different camera. Remember, though: you're getting a lot of camera for the price. You'll still get a great camera for a great price, after you send it in for warranty work.

Review: The only problem I have is getting edited video back on the DV tape. Does anybody know if this camera has a DV in feature? Otherwise it is good for the price you have to pay for it.

Summary: Don't waste your money
Review: Sharp's warranty stinks. They have 90 days on labor, 1 year on parts. But if you need parts after the 90 days, be prepared to fork over a [amount] labor fee! Plus, they only have one service center, in New York, so you have shipping fees, insurance fees for shipping it, and the [amount] return shipping fee that Sharp tacks on. Do it right the first time and spend the extra money to get a quality camera so you don't have to deal with this.

Review: ~I didnot trust those negative reviews at the time I jumped into a deal when sharp offered a ...rebate on this model.
I tested the camcorder with a blanktape playing and did not see the problem on the common reported tape mechanical problem. I felt I was lucky. Well, 5 months after the purchasing, with less than 1 tape shooting time, it exhibited the exact the same problem! It ate tapes! Mine situation is worse, after several try, it now rejects any tapes into the compartment. Called

Review: Sharp products may be cheaper, but you should seriously think about the reliability issue, especially if you are dishing out [$$$] and the warranty is only 90 days. They say free parts up to one year, but the flat repair fee is [$$$] regardless of the nature of the problem. I will definitely pay [$$$] more the next time and get a Sony!!! I had my Sharp camcorder for six months. Used it to record two tapes. Then it died on me. I turned it off one day, and it never turned back on... There are only two approved repair centers in the U.S., and it costs [$$$] for labor. This is what you have to pay regardless of what the problem is. For all I know, it could be the power switch that costs Sharp a few dollars. What kind of warranty is it if you have to pay [$$$] for a [$$$] product 6 months after the purchase, and without any guarantee that the fix is good. My Sony 8mm camcorder lasted a good part of ten years, and the only thing I ever spent money on was a carrying strap and a new battery. Do not only look at the specs. You can make any spec look good. I bought this camcorder on specs alone. It was the best bang for the buck. But if you want to get your money's worth out of your purchase, you need to be looking at reliability. ... I suggest that it's worth paying a little extra for the bottom of the line Sony digital camcorder.
