Summary: Versatile and high quality !!
Review: I purchased this compact player after reading reviews all over the WEB. Personally, I needed something with 128 MB of storage that was small enough to carry around in my pocket. The MuVo seemed to be the logical choice for me (although there are several others in this size range). Arguably, the lack of a display could be seen as a drawback. But, for me, I know exactly what I loaded onto the player and don't really care to see the name of the artist, title of album, etc .... scrolling along eating away at my battery life. The drag and drop simplicity of loading music is another plus for me. I wear the player around my neck while at work and have a fairly strenuous, outdoor job. The player has performed without flaw for me. The included earbuds can be a little uncomfortable after a few hours, but other than that, I'm extremely pleased !

Summary: This player is absolute junk
Review: I bought the 64MB MuVo and initially it worked great. It's true that you can get it running more quickly than most MP3 players because you don't have to install special software. However, the player stopped working when I tried to put a new album on the player. At first I thought it was the copy protection that Windows Media player enforces by default, so I turned that off. Still, the player would only play the first couple seconds of the first song before turning off. Since then I've tried everything--different MP3 formats (bitrates), WMA, copy protection on/off, reformatting multiple times, being ultra-careful about copying files onto the player (not dragging multiple things at once), etc. etc. This thing is just a major piece of [poo] and won't even turn on. As others have noted, the USB portion seems to work ok, so the memory portion is solid. I know this because I can play the music from the USB drive on my PC. But the player itself...either won't turn on or won't stay on for more than a few seconds. All this with multiple brand new batteries. The WORST consumer electronic item I have ever purchased, even worse than my Lexmark Z32 printer.

Summary: Nice idea - POOR QUALITY
Review: I just got back from the post office to send my second unit back. The first went bad after 2 months. After multiple contacts with customer "service," I finally got authorization to send it back in. Five weeks after Creative received it (per their website), their "RMA status" box read "NO PROBLEM FOUND." I called and asked them to not send it back until it was fixed. I was assured that it had been repaired. Almost 2 weeks later, I received a dead unit. And yes, I had to listen to yet another customer service rep turn the pages of a manual while I told him the next step in the "recovery" process - that was again fruitless. So after much wasted time with customer service, and being on hold, and getting to spend another half hour in line at the post office,... I get the privilege of waiting another 5+ weeks to get another faulty unit. Gee, I can't wait. And I didn't...

During all of this, I purchased a Cowon iaudio 256 MB flash memory mp3 and have been extremely pleased.

The MuVo sound quality is not bad. The battery life is about 1/2 the advertised length. The software caused my WinXP PC to crash (blue screen) after every other time that the MuVo was inserted in a USB. The size is tiny and you barely notice it in a pocket. The unit intermittently and spontaneously played songs in a random order, sometimes ignoring many songs with each cycle.

Bottom line: DO NOT PURCHASE A MuVo! The product is extremely poorly built, fragile, and is made by a company with timely but wholly inadequate customer service. The warranty period of 90 days is a strategic move on their part.

Summary: Good when it works, hasn't worked too often for me.
Review: The design and idea behind the Muvo is great - I bought it almost exclusively for gym use. I like that I can use it as a memory stick, although data transfer could be a bit faster from my Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop.

The software has been pretty horrible, however. I have had about 3 weeks of use during the full 4 months I've owned it. It doesn't seem to deal well with some MP3 files & a required, hidden file called settings.dat invites deletion.

I would also appreciate a random play button and a wristband. This may be available with the latest firmware release; I'm not sure.

Summary: Great
Review: I think the problem many people are having are what I experienced when I first bought it. I put all my music files into folders on the drive. The Nomad cannot recognize music files in folders and did not work. However, once I moved the music files out of folders it worked perfectly. Great device as an MP3 player and even better as a "portable" hard drive of memory. Great for people who do lots work at various computers (home, work, school) and are sick of emailing files back and forth. Highly recommend it.

Summary: HOW TO FIX THE ON/OFF BUTTON
Review: Creative has not been very good about responding to support emails. If you ever encounter a problem with the on/off button not working don't panic. There is most likely nothing wrong with your MuVo player. I won't go into the technical details of what happens but you will encounter this problem if your battery dies and the MuVo does not turn itself off.

THE SOLUTION IS TO PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER AND REFORMAT THE DRIVE. You can of course remove your MP3's or other files first.

I hope this information helps anyone who buys this product. I love mine with the exception that there aren't any accessories for it. I like to run but have no "armband" or secure attachment for it.

Good luck.

Summary: Similar (negative) experience
Review: Thanks to everyone for saving me time. I was trying to figure out how to deal with my recently-non-functioning MuVo, which I bought on the recommendation of Men's Health magazine (grrrrr). Just like Orlando Gutierrez, mine worked for about 93 days -- just long enough for my warranty to wear out -- and then the on/off button just stopped working. It's now worthless.

Before I bought the MuVo, I read reviews that preserving playing order and the flimsy construction were issues. I should have paid more attention. The lack of a belt clip was a problem, too, when it comes to working out. Also, I only got about 2-3 hours on the AAA battery at most.

I'm off to buy the iAudio CW200. I'm willing to pay a bit more for sturdier construction, longer battery life and more features. Wish me luck!

Summary: Quite Working After Warranty Period
Review: I really loved this product . . . till it just quit working after about four months. I didn't drop it . . . I didn't work out with it or sweat on it (I used it while going for walks). I thought I just had bad luck until I read the other reviews here. It appears that Creative Labs shipped this product with some of the worst quality control ever.

Well, it worked with me . . . once. ...

Summary: Poor Product - Miserable Service
Review: The concept is great - small sleek simple solid-state. What more could you ask for? Coming off the Rio players with their awkward Audio Manager to move songs on and off the unit, I was looking forward to small and simple.

The implementation, however, falls far short of the mark. I have been through three MuVo units. They have all been defective.

The storage part of the unit becomes corrupted regularly. Adding or subtracting tracks can corrupt the drive - forcing a full reformat and re-loading. Very tedious and, from my experience, a common problem. This does not appear to be "just one guy's bad experience." Read - "Design Flaw."

Also, you cannot simply scoop up a bunch of files and transfer them to the unit, if you wish to preserve play order. The MuVo plays strictly first in-first played order. Windows copy, however, does not necessarily copy files selected in the order listed in the directory. The actual copy order performed by Windows has never been relevant... until now. If you listen to books on tape like me, however, unless you not really hung on that "sequential chapter" thing, it's critical. The only solution, I've found, is to manually copy one track at a time. Rio Audio Manager doesn't seem too bad, now.

Finally, there's customer service. I've been buying Creative Sound Cards for years and never, ever needed customer service before, so I never realized how poor it is. Creative Customer Service is practically non-existent; it is designed to frustrate and discourage people seeking support. You have two options, you can call the Customer Support Line and, unless you live in San Jose, CA, expect to pay the full price of your MuVo again in toll charges waiting, on hold, for the next representative, or through their web site system where weeks can go by waiting for a stock response, cut and pasted from the support manual - and then not necessarily responsive to your question. ... That's Creative customer support!

Getting a Return Authorization number to send the unit in for service is like pulling teeth.

MuVo, I understand, is short for Musical Voyage. Consider this your HYDROLANT Special Warning to Mariners: Steer Clear! This is a beta product. It doesn't work and Creative won't help you. Don't be an Early Adopter Sucker like me. [Let's not get so aggressive with the editing, there, Amazon police.]

Wait for V3.0, when they've got the bugs worked out.
