Rating: Summary: Lasted only six months Review: Granted, I am tough on my personal electronics but at these prices I expect some reliability. After one day skiing with my Riot (no crashes, maybe a little moisture on the outside of the unit) the hard drive began to whir and the display starting looking funny. Within days, the machine is headed to the dustbin. Battery life and download times were average at best, but bearable. I understood that I was not buying a top of the line iPod so I was not expecting much, but the Riot did not meet my low expectations.
Rating: Summary: good device sucky software Review: The Riot is a good size device for those who want to carry a large amount of music without bulky bags of CD's etc. In conjunction with an attachment I picked up at radio shack that attached to my car tape deck I can go on long car trips with only the Riot for company. Problem... the software is a major pain in the **( and primarily exists to get a monthly fee out of the purchaser. It is the only way to get an up to date software driver is to buy the On Line service and the far to complicated and "busy" screen you finally download insists that you must be connnected to the internet constantly when you are trying to run the software. The software is complicated, comes with incomplete documentation and is not intuitative to use. This is not the sort of device/software to use if you run primarily from a laptop because of the power save function that interfers with dowloads of MP3's I am still searching for a nice software package worthy of this neat little toy.
Rating: Summary: Not that great Review: The hard drive is HUGE, but, if it constantly locks up and not all the selctions work and your battery life is less than 2 hrs, what is the point!
Rating: Summary: A Good Value Jukebox Player Review: Well, having done some research on the Riot prior to purchasing it, I was at first worried about the wide range of ratings it had received. I bit the bullet, though, and ordered one, and have to say, that I am pretty pleased with it so far. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the design. It is a bit bulky, requiring two hands to operate it, but the fairly large LCD display makes finding your songs and organzing your playlists a breeze. Having, right out of the box, upgraded it with the latest firmware upgrade, I haven't run into any battery issues. I'm consistently getting at or more than 10 hours of playback after a full charge. Overall, I'm pleased with the unit. The software, however, is another matter. Having to use RealJukebox to transfer my mp3's and wma's to the player itself is a pain, the program is faulty at best and sometimes froze up during transfer. Also, it opens pop up ads occasionally, which isn't a huge annoyance, but still annoying nonetheless. Hopefully, WM Player will have Riot support soon. If you're looking for an affordable jukebox player with a large hard drive, this one is a good deal.
Rating: Summary: Update: Better software option Review: As of march '03, there is absolutely no need to use either Rio Player or Moodlogic to manage the Rio Riot. Microsoft is now offering a free Powertoy applet called the Plus! Portable Audio Device applet (PlusPAD) which, in combination with a new driver from SonicBlue, lets you you the Windows XP file manager to manage the Riot; it shows up in the MY Computer Window as a system device, much like a Hard Drive. Double-clicking on the icon pops up a directory Window where you can sort the files by any of the ID3 tag attributes and copy or delete files by the usual cut-n-paste or drag-n-drop processes. As an extra bonus, the Riot-specific driver lets you manage the Riot from inside Windows Media player. Hence, no pop-ups, no nagging, no attempts to take over your PC. All you need are the latest drivers from Sonicblue and the MS-supplied applet. That's one less gripe about the Riot, no?
Rating: Summary: Rio Riot Feedback Review: It's incredible, but like anything it has ups and downs, but I'm happy to say that the PROS outway the CONS. UPS or Pros: Long Battery Life, Rechargable Battery, Rugged, Easy to use, 20 Gigs is a lot of room, includes protective case, 400 MP3 Albums or 800 WMA Albums at 64kps., it sounds great, Large Clear screen when backlight is off or in the dark with backlight on, Windows/Macintosh Compatability. DOWNS or Cons: You cannot sort music in alphabetical order after you add files, Your MP3Tags are what sorts the files so they must be accurate, long file names do not scroll (they do scroll while playing), Screen not too clear when backlight is on during daytime, file management is add only, you cannot copy files from the player back to the computer. Too bad they don't publish a better software package, they use(RIO JUKEBOX). Windows Media Player 9 does not support it at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I'm just pointing out some CONS but I am happy with this product! Hopefully RIO or someone else publishes a program that allows you to copy files back to the computer, it would make a great media library backup (20Gigs). Webmaster:
Rating: Summary: Great but bigger than i thought Review: After taking the risk of purchasing this item online and just by reading the other reviews i was a bit nervoous about it. but now I love it. Its bigger than i thought but i clip it on my waist and kept it moving. In the beginning it crashed on me but after i reset it, it went back to normal. The way the music is so organize its it easy to get around it.
Rating: Summary: You doth protest too much Review: Anyone who says keep me anonymous is called "an electronics fan". As one of those reviewers, I can assure you I do not work for a competitor, I am just a frustrated consumer who was relieved that a sympathetic store took my rioriot back. I, frankly, resent the accusation and find it a little suspect. Maybe some of you aren't having battery problems. I did with three units. And God help you if you EVER need to reach tech support. I still haven't had a reply to my last two e-mails that were sent over a month ago.
Rating: Summary: It is an advertising popup riot Review: I own a Rio Riot, and it is fine for what it does. But in order to get music over to the Rio Riot, you have to use software from "REAL" -- and they put up an unending stream of popup advertising. I'm afraid to say that if I had known how abusive the software was, I would have gotten another brand of MP3 player.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I would not reccommend this MP3 player to anyone. The pro's: it can store alot of music (sounds good, huh). The cons are many (they out weigh the pro's by a mile). The software interface is very difficult which makes it hard to transfer anything from your pc. The corporation that makes this doesn't seem to respond to e-mail...but I did forget to look up their rating in Consumer reports (my bad).
