Summary: Bad Product, Bad Service
Review: I bought a Rio Riot in January and it broke within a month. Since I had purchased it through the company I tried to get a refund from them. Let me warn you, if anything goes wrong with your product it takes over a week to get a response from tech support beyond a form letter that may or may not have anything to do with your problem. I finally gave up after 4 months of trying, so now I am left with a Rio Riot that does not work at all. I would suggest going with another company just incase something goes wrong.

Summary: Good...but there are better
Review: You really have to love the sheer number of songs this thing can carry around but there are so many aspects to hate about the Rio Riot that it hardly seems worth it. Using Real to transfer your music is so asinine- why not use Music Match or just transfer the songs straight to the hard drive? It is also a pain to remember which songs you have and have not transferred because there is no auto-sync function. Half the time I get a new song and transfer a batch to the Riot, I realize that I have either transferred it twice or not at all...and those transfers are terribly slow. They are about as slow as the Riot itself is large and heavy. Hold a Riot in one hand and an iPod in the other and you'll be stunned at the difference. The closest thing I can compare the Riot to is an original Xbox controller (and even heavier) and we all know how comfortable those things are. It is entirely too large and heavy to keep in your pocket. The scroll wheel is also irritating. It works well as a mode of movement through the menus but it is not accelerated so if you have twenty-five artists that start with the letter S (which I do), you have to scroll through all of them instead of making a quick move to reach the end. Also, it is a very small scroll wheel and only about half of it is exposed so you'll be doing thumb aerobics to reach the letter Z on the menu system. On the bright side, that menu system is very well done- no instruction would be needed because it is almost completely self-explanatory. The sound quality is perfect and I loved the headphones included with the unit (although they were a touch big). I would really love to see the company release a new version of this in a much smaller, lighter package with USB2.0 or Firewire support, Music Match compatibility, and an all-around more attractive presentation. If you want the best, this isn't it. This is strictly for beginners. I bought a new iPod and couldn't be any happier with it; it is a perfect, beautiful little gizmo. Get a Riot only if iPod is out of the question.

Summary: RioRiot 20GB MP3 Player
Review: DO NOT BUY!!! Just a little warning. I bought the Riot Riot about 2 months ago...Major problems thus far.

First off, at only 25% filled with songs, the player lasts dramatically less than the 10 hours on play time they advertise. I get approximately 2-3 hours--and that is at 25% capacity in use.

Secondly, power switch provides for 3 options: off, lock and on (the lock is used so you can't accidently press any buttons while playing. My first pet peeve is that the lock should be a totally different button. When swtiching from the on to lock position [off--lock--on] chances are you will switch it off. The switch is much like a dimmer switch on the wall of on a household light. Only the 3 functions operate within 1 inch total and the switch moves to the next spot. You have to watch how much pressure you use otherwise you turn the device off and will need to restart the entire thing.

Third, that power switch has broken, which means down time and repairs needed under it's 1 year warranty. Again, I have had this for about 2 months of which down time has accumulated to 1.5 weeks not including repair time.

Lastly, the system crashes ALL the time AND there is no use for the reset button. When the system crashed no button is operable. I basically have to wait for it to drain its battery and turn off. The first time took a little over a day. After the battery is drained, recharging is required which means more down time and less use time.

Basically, this is the worst product I have ever bought in my life. The price caught my eye but I warn you DO NOT BE DECIEVED! This product has severe flaws!

Summary: DO NOT BUY!!!
Review: I loved it for about 3 months. I used it all the time and it was great. Then it just died. It wouldn't turn on even after charging it thoroughly. Spend the extra money and get a Nomad or an IPod.

Summary: Excellent player, good price, a few little bugs.
Review: I was impressed with the sound quality of the player. I love the menu interface as well. The battery system is a little buggy, but a simple download of the firmware upgrade solved that problem. The file loading is also greatly improved by simply downloading the Windows Applet for Mp3 devices.

Summary: Great device ??
Review: Loaded over 4000 tracks. It took over 10 days to do it. Then it totally stopped functioning. Tech support spent a lot of time with me (not an 800 number). They gave me an RMA#. It took about 2 weeks to get device back.
Spent another 10 days (I am retired and when I say 10 days I mean at least 10 hours / day). When it was fully loaded: it malfunctioned again. Got another RMA #.

Reloaded 4000 tracks. Now the battery is dead! Will not take a charge! They refuse to give me an RMA#.

If you get one that works, it's a great device. Mine would now be used as a door stop (except it's not heavy enough!)

Try your luck with a company that cares about servicing their customers.

Summary: Outstanding !
Review: The Rio Riot is just outstanding. Good sound quality, good size, it has everything you can get... for the price. And the software is easy to use. The only thing that could be improved is the transfer rate. But this is a minor issue.

Summary: Here is the DOPE on the RIO RIOT
Review: Okay. I have had my Rio for about month and a half. I have 340 CD's stored on it. That is about 3800 songs. I like it. I really like the random play. I enjoy randoming 'all' of my songs, and letting it pick the tunes, I mean... I know I will like the songs right? What is great about it, you can charge it the night before, when you are asleep, and use it all day at work. The Rio is great since it holds such a large amount of volume, and is considerably cheaper than IPOD action. Also, using this to play all my MP3's at work (Just unplug computer speakers from computer and plug it into your RIO RIOT) you don't have to worry about getting in trouble for having 'MP3's on your work computer. My Rio just cranks out the tunes all day long. No battery troubles here. Not sure how someone can have battery trouble, what are you expecting? Overall, it really satisfies for what I wish it to do, and that is play all my music. Some weak points? Well, it is about the size of a XBOX hand controller, but that doesn't bother me. But, if I were going to jog with it, it would provide some trouble. I would choose a different MP3 player if I were going to do that. But, if you are on an excersize bike, like I do, it is fine, just put it in a carry case or on the bike basket etc... works fine. But that is the only complaint I have, and it all comes down to understanding what you want from an MP3 player.

Transfer rates. USB 1.1 is slow. Again, planning comes into play here. I just put all the songs in the Rio software that I wanted to copy over, and then went to bed. No troubles. I really don't know how long it took, due to the fact that I was asleep. A lot of people could use thier sleep time to their advantage. When you are asleep charge your cell phone, charge your MP3 players, charge EVERYTHING that you need charged.. and while your asleep, transfer the MP3s to your fav device. This product is about playing music, and it does it fine.

It is true that you can spend a lot more, like about 200 dollars more, to get one that is a bit smaller (about an inch each way) and transfers faster... and if that is what you want, got spend your money.

You must know what your needs are before you purchase. I feel as though 90% of the complaints are from people who did not know what they wanted before they laid out money.

Summary: Heres the truth about the rio riot
Review: Ok heres the truth. for starters, its a great mp3 player. it actually DOES hold 5000 songs, i know because ive put that many on there. 2nd, dont listen to people who say that the software for the rio riot doesnt work with windows xp. It DOES! those people are just computer iliterate and dont know how to work it. It most certainly isnt the best software in the world, but it works, it just takes alittle tweaking and sometimes it quits on u every now and then on xp but thats ok it still works and they have an upgrade coming soon for xp users. 3rd, the rio customer service DOES work, it just takes a couple of days and the answers are abit general. As long as you follow the instructions that come with the play, test out with the software, play around with it and find out the easiest way to make it work for you, then you wont have a problem. to play downloaded songs in the real jukebox software, you have to right click on the song, and make sure it is set to play with real jukebox, if not you must click change, then look through the list and click real jukebox. Now you have the truth about the Rio Riot. And dont let people tell you that the battery life stinks. I went on a 12 hour trip and i didnt have to recharge it. It is deffinately one of the best mp3 players. ...
