Summary: Support SUCKS
Review: I wanted to give this player 5 stars; but I am unable to receive any reply from iriver support at all. You can't tell me that they are so busy that they can't at least acknowledge a support request within 72 hours.

The player itself seems solid and dependable. Here are my thoughts on pros and cons

PROS -
o Quite hard drive and no "humming" noise.
o All accessories included. No need to purchase AC adapter, case, remote, ear buds or additional cables.
o FM tuner is a big plus in my opinion - I use it at work all the time to listen to my favorite morning show.
o Compact design - not much bigger than a deck of cards (without case).
o All functions can be performed on remote, including config settings, etc...
o Great LCD screen, very readable and brightly lite.
o No driver installation needed for Windows to recognize it as an external USB storage device.
o Upgradable Flash rom

CONS -
o No mute button... did you hear me iriver? NO MUTE BUTTON?
o Can't easily play tracks in album order. Pink Floyd albums are meant to be played in album order and the player sorts alphebetically. There should be a sort option to sort the songs in album order according to the ID3 tags but there's not.
o Database indexing utility is lame at best. When adding files in order to search by album, artist, title, etc... you have to update an index file. The "add" function seems to corrupt the index file and I have rebuild the file every time.
o Included ear buds are a joke.
o Users manual was written and desgined by an amature desktop publisher. The functionality of many features is not clearly explained.
o Can't create playlist on unit, can only be done with WinAmp which is not included. As a matter of fact, no software is included other than the lame db indexing utility.
o Can't delete files on player. Can only manager files when player is connected to PC.

I researched hard drive MP3 players for about a month before decided on this one. I still think compared to what's available it's one of the best options. I think the IPOD "may" have it beat but who wants an apple?

Summary: ihp is good but...
Review: I recieved the Ihp for Christmas and it appealed to me most because it had lots of features, as well as long battery life. Thats where the problem is. the label says up to 16 hours, but when i use the volume, even just at lets say, 10 out of 40, the battery lasts a good 4-5 hours. Does using the WOW eq affect the battery life? if it does please post something. If the batery life was what it says, then i would give the item 5 stars

Summary: Bought it, shoulda returned it
Review: (1) Not loud enough - its like having a 12w boombox or something. I fly a lot - you will have to crank this to the max setting to even seriously hear it on a plane.

(2) Sound not so great - its good, but not as good as others out there.

Other than that, it is just awesome. For me though those are major items.

Summary: great even for an idiot
Review: This is my first MP3 playetr and it is great. Easy to use and tons of features.

Summary: Very cool product
Review: This is the first time that I have owned a mp3 player, and I am very impressed! But the thing is I mostly play 192k and up MP3 files, and I am guessing that takes more juice out of the battery. My usual play time is about 10 hours, thats still more than enough for the whole day though!

My final opinion on this product is that it is great, I have not tried any other mp3 player but from what I see from many satisfied customers that this is a great piece of electronic equipment, and I have tried so hard to fill the whole 20GB of space, but its not that easy.

You released a cool product, iRiver, I'm proud that I shelled out $300+ on it. It was well worth it.

Thanks!!!

Summary: Good if you have friends who like your music.
Review: After doing a lot of research ont this and other mp3 players, I decided to purchase this product over the iPod because of the cheaper price, better Windows compatibility, .ogg support, and everything else that's already been mentioned.

What nobody else has mentioned but is (to me, at least), a big plus, is the line-out plug, which allows a second set of headphones to be plugged into the player. This is great if you're hanging out with one of your friends and you need something to do. Instead of each of you being isolated in your own musical universe, you can sing along together to the music. And unlike many CD players, the line-out sound quality and volume is exactly the same as the normal headphone jack's. Neither the Rio Karma nor the iPod has this feature.

Some rumors that I've heard which I'd like to disprove:

1. "It's big, bulky, and ugly."
Although I have to admit that the iPod is cuter and sleeker, I really like the black design. The carrying case is indeed very functional, so that you don't have to take it out of its case ever. Unfortunately, the case itself is rather ugly and makes the player seem about 5 times more bulky. However, since most of the time you have the main unit tucked away somewhere, this shouldn't be a big issue.

2. "The scrolling is slow."
Compared to the iPod, the scrolling is a bit slower, but the speed is (I believe) adjustable, and at any rate, it's fast enough for me. If you have this problem, you might want to consider further organizing your music into subfolders.

3. "It takes forever to load."
I believe that this complaint was made only when the user attempted to use the database function. Most of us organize our music by folder and shouldn't have this problem.

4. "The text is too small."
The Rio Karma's is way smaller. Although my eyesight isn't perfect, I have no problem reading the text without my glasses.

5. "It's too complicated."
Actually, the iRiver is very intuitive. Even without the very well-written manual with excellent illustrations, the device shouldn't be hard to figure out at all, especially since you don't need any special software to transfer music.

These were probably my main concerns when purchasing this product, and they've all been pretty much answered. And ahhh the remote is so freaking adorable!

Summary: Amazing mp3 player!
Review: I bought this player a few weeks ago as an alternative to the ipod (amazon was also having a sale AND rebate, which made it even more affordable), and I LOVE it! The scrolling is much easier than that of my friend's ipod, and putting files onto it is so easy: just transfer them to the correct folder on your computer. I've already put over 1,000 songs on it, and have used only 2.4 GB--there's tons of space left! This mp3 player is similarly sized to the ipod, just a little thicker, and comes with an excellent carrying case. Overall, if you're looking for an mp3 player with lots of storage, this is it! No difficulty with mac/pc interface, etc...FANTASTIC! Thank you iriver!

Summary: Much better than 1G and 3G iPod. The best HD MP3 I ever own!
Review: I have the 1G and 3G iPod. When I got the 3G iPod I was disappointed beacuse I didn't see mayor improvement in the sound quality, hardware (no line in for recording, no line out in the device, no improvement in the battery) and the software of the player. I think the only improvement made by Apple during two years was to reduce the size but I don't care.
I'm using the iHP-120 with Etymotic ER-4P Headphones, extension cable to convert ER-4P to ER-4S and the Total Airhead headphone amplifier & audio image processor from Headroom. The iHP-120 sound much better than the 3G iPod. Also the battery last more time and you have the possibility to change many settings. I think iPod is user frindly player but not flexible player for somebody like me (eg no user equalizer presets, no control of the bass). If you buy iHP-120 you pay a similar price than the 15GB iPod but you get extra things (nice leather case, internal & external mic, remote control, better battery) and the most important thing: BETTER SOUND.
My only complain to iHP-120 and all the HD based MP3 player they don't have a removable battery.

Summary: flawless
Review: I've had an iHP 120 for 2 months. This is a flawless machine.

I'm an early adopter and a very critical consumer (got a Nomad 6GB when they came out in fall 2000, which replaced the minidisc recorder I'd had since 1997), and this is the best-designed and simply the best performing machine I've ever used for live recording of my own and others' music. It's also an excellent and flexible jukebox/player.

I have a few tiny quibbles (for example, I wish the font on the text-file reader were adjustable-size or were much smaller), but all in all I can recommend this as a much more useful machine and a better value than anything else available. (I think there are plenty of things Apple does right, but in this case the iPod really pales in comparison.)

By the way, the manual is excellent and clear too. A class act all around.

Summary: carry it everywhere!
Review: I bought my fiancee the iHP 120 to help her study for the bar exam (record her notes, organize them, back them up onto the laptop, then playback for memorizing). Well, she barely got to use it: I've turned into one of those kids with the headphones on constantly.

likes:
- OGG-VORBIS SUPPORT!!!!! (half the space consumption of MP3, same/better quality, no restrictions of AAC, WMA, etc.)
- pretty easy to navigate & config, e.g. adjusting the volume is easy and painless.
- battery life is excellent
- brilliant design for location of external plugs -- all of the holes for external connections (headphones, line in/out, remote control, power, USB, etc.) are all in reasonable places, and the provided leather carrying case covers exactly the right set.
- everything you expect works: fast transfer, shows up as a hard drive with no special software required, etc.), backlight is good, etc.
- the pause & stop controls are well designed, e.g. easy to pause recording, easy to pause playback, auto-shutdown if stopped too long, remembers where you were listening, etc.
- I dropped it 2-3 feet once and it was fine, not even a scratch (leather carrying case).
- it's "cute" (big issue for my fiancee!) -- even with the leather carrying case.

dislikes:
- the joystick takes some getting used to -- but once I did, it wasn't a hassle. My fiancee had no trouble.
- when recording, it's easy to accidentally "slip" into a different mode.
- startup time could be faster (large database?). shutdown is fine, though it's not instantaneous.
