Rating: Summary: Just what I hoped for! Review: I must have read every review on every mp3 player before I finally decided on this one. And let me tell you, it's great!I bought it to: 1) use when I workout: treadmill, skateboarding, rollerblading, even yoga and it works great for all that. 2) Plus I'm learning Russian from language CDs and I'm able to put my lessons right on the rio, and go! It's great to have my language lessons, and all my favorite music right in my pocket. With the 256 MB that it comes with, I'm able to put about 6 hours worth of language lessons, plus about 20 or so songs in WMA format and there's still a little memory left. I highly recommend this player.
Rating: Summary: Great Gadget!!! Review: Just received this yesterday as my from me to me gift. I already ran a couple of miles with it and its great. The software is very user friendly and dependable. Sound quality is very good. The FM turner works so so, but I don't think this is a must have feature. Very rugged and the rubber borders are great. Sure will handle a couple of falls. The only thing that worried me is that the USB port is open meaning if some sweat got inside it could damage to player- just have to be careful.
Rating: Summary: Technical Difficulties Review: I just received the Rio Cali as a gift. The player seems pretty nice (it is the first one I have owned so I don't have much to compare it to). I have had trouble with getting assistance from their support team. I was having problems getting the USB connection to work so I tried sending an e-mail. After two days with no response I called their support line (this is not a toll free call). I spent an hour on the phone with someone who had me jump through a number of hoops (reinstalling the software, plugging it into a different USB port, trying a different computer, etc.) before she finally recommended that I exchange the player at the store for a new one. If you get one, I hope that you do not need to rely on Rio for support.
Rating: Summary: Great Workout Buddy Review: The Good: Lightweight and Comfortable - Player is very lightweight. So much so that I don't realize it's there when out running or working out in the gym. Earphones stay pretty much in my ear even with a lot of movement. Price - Can find it for pretty cheap and there is a Manufacturer's Rebate available until 2/2004. Radio Tuner - I have found that it works well both outside and indoors. Great for listening to the TV at the gym or just having a change of pace from the MP3s. Expandable Memory - Right now the 128 MB is enough for me, even on long runs, but having the ability to add up to 512 MB will "future-proof" me.
The Not-So-Good: Not really that bad, but I do have to be honest... Belt Clip - I would rather have the option to directly connect a belt clip to the device much like most Walkmans. However, the small lightweight "pouch" you must use to gain the belt clip does snugly fit the device. PC Interface - When you connect the device to the computer, Windows does not recognize it as an external drive. This just means you can't Drag and Drop in Windows Explorer. However, the included software or the Windows Media Player interfaces are easy to use (you can drag and drop to either of those). USB Interface - To plug the USB cable into the device, you must first remove it from the "pouch" with the belt clip. I guess this protects the USB interface from the elements, but it's just a hassle when transferring new files.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I got this on sale from Amazon in the middle of December. Tried it out and all I can say is it's great. I find it easy to use, has good FM quality and good quality sound even at 64KB wma. The Rio Music Manager is easy to use, transfering files are quick even with USB 1.1. I liked it so much I splurged on a 512MB expansion flash memory that was also on sale and now store several albums worth of music for commuting and gym. If I were to make it better, I'd add support for other music compression types besides mp3 and wma, add support for transfering complete albums as playlists, instead of transfering music and then manually creating a playlist.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy, not worth the time or money Review: Very disappointed with this mp3 player. I read many reviews and the ones that say it's great, its terrible. I spent many hours dowmloading over and over to get good sound quality. Sound quality is terrible. Music drowns out vocals. Also you will need to purchase a mp3 encoder for $9.95. I called the customer service( Digital Networks) looks like Rio was bought by someone else, and they coundn't even answer my questions or hadno idea what I was talking about. Rio/Digital Networks You should be ashamed of yourselves to even put on the market YUK!!

Rating: Summary: Software SUCKS Review: Got one of these for my girl for Christmas, and it is going back to the store TOMORROW. I'm sold on the form factor and it seems usable, but the software seems to be REQUIRED (meaning just plugging it in to any old computer is a no-op) and additionally it sucks ass (no simple file transfers using windows file system, have to use proprietary awfulness), so I'm going to find something better...
Rating: Summary: Only because there aren't negative stars Review: The product may be wonderful, but we'll never know. We tried to use it, and it kept shutting off after a few minutes. After replacing the batteries, we tried to go to the website, which wasn't working. So, we called tech support, a long distance number, on our dime, to be on hold for a long, long time. Finally, we got a technical support person whose English was so bad that he was incomprehensible. And, to make matters worse, he knew nothing at all about the product - we could hear him talking to someone else in the background, asking for help. Finally, after more than half an hour talking to this person long distance, the only thing he could come up with was to log on to the web site, which doesn't work, and maybe an upgrade would help. He didn't know for sure, and he wasn't sure what to do if that didn't help. He did give me a case number, but in order to use it, I have to call back on my dime again to talk to someone else who probably won't speak English either, and won't know any more about the product than this person did. It may be a wonderful product, and the problem we have may have a simple correction, but it doesn't matter how good it is if we can't get help when we have problems. I'd have been better off to buy a no-name Walmart brand - at least I'd be able to return it easily if it didn't work. What a merry Christmas! I strongly recommend against ever buying anything you might need tech support on from on line sources, and particularly from this company.
