Summary: Best MP3/CD Player Under 100 Bucks
Review: Most of the other reviews on this page just take the SP100 to SP90 comparision. You have to look beyond this to really see what SonicBlue has given you.

I studied up on a lot of MP3 players before purchasing the SP90. I guess I didn't study enough, because I too didn't know that it didn't have a backlit screen or firmware upgrades when I bought it. Good thing I had two weeks to cool down before it arrived in the mail.

This thing has great sound, especially with the 5 eq settings, and the line out feature and navigation are great features. Also, the style is just great, SonicBlue's design for their RioVolts are some of the best.

I don't understand why so many complain about the firmware updates, now that I have mine. I was worried when I heard that it didn't have them. Yeah, but neither do any of the other sub-[amt] MP3/CD players. Also, you already have the ability to play WMA files, so you don't really need to upgrade for another popular file name for a long time. Besides, MP3 and WMA files have great sound quality anyway. The player doesn't take too long to load a song (when the disc is spinning, it doesn't take any time at all).

The backlit isn't a big deal to me; I don't really use my player too much in the dark.

All in all: I LOVE THIS THING!

Summary: Pretty good.
Review: The Rio Volt sp90 is not a bad little player. Its considerably cheaper than the Rio Volt sp100 and Rio Volt sp250 (NICE!!!!) It has most of the features of the sp100, except the backlit screen, the remote control (you can buy a better remote for the sp90 than what comes with the sp100) and the firmware upgradeablility... But since im only 13, my income was limited at the moment and I bought the sp90. Its a great upgrade from my original cd/mp3 player (the Classic CM415, dude, that was a piece.....) and it has most of the features of the sp100, and one of the ones it doesn't have you can buy.The sp90 has all of the good stuff that comes with top of the line cd/mp3/wma players, and looks pretty pimpin. So I think if you want a very good player for a low price, go with this one...

Summary: Nothing compared to SP100
Review: This modle has nothing great in it. First of all it does not have 120 sec ESP. It only has 40 Sec. That also is a software option not a switch like in SP-100. Second the Firmware is not upgradeable. Since these 2 features are advertised but are not present, it was a bad experience for me. I am switching to SP-100.

Summary: Compared To RioVolt SP100
Review: Well, for the price this is a great player, but here are some things the SP100 has and this doesn't:

1. Most important: firmware upgrades. This feature has a lot of power and it gives the older unit a lot of new features, like playing playlists and improved programming, and it's actually very important, because if there will be a future audio codec that will be popular like OGG vorbis or even MP3 Pro, and if it will replace regular MP3, then you can be sure that Sonic Blue will have a firmware upgrade for your player. (By the way, the best place to download the upgrades are from the iriver site (which is the original company that menufactures the RioVolt), and not the RioVolt site becuase the iriver upgrades work fine on the 'Volt and they come out much faster. Lately the Rio team hasn't released any upgrades at all, but the iriver team is releasing them all the time.

2. Remote control: I don't use the SP100's remote much, but I do use it a little, and it's very convenient for walking on the street and just skipping over the tracks you don't like without taking the unit out of your backpack.

3. LCD backlight: very important for me, as I use the player a lot at the Army at night and it's pretty useless without the backlight, because then I can't browse for the album I want to play.

Anyway, you should get this player if you can't afford the extra money for the SP100, but if you have about $175 to spare you should buy the new SP250, which has an 8 MB buffer and a really neat LCD display and FM radio, a charger, NIMh battries, and improved features AND it supports firmware upgrades as well, and in general is much improved over the SP100 as well as the SP90. It is the perfect player, if you can afford the price!

Summary: OK, but...
Review: Be forewarned: this one is not firmware-upgradeable, unlike other Rio Volt products. Spend more and get SP250 or older Rio Volt model.

Summary: Dr. Liebman
Review: This is a good player for my needs. I make my own CD's from MP3's that I download. I use it at the gym and I love the aerobic music that I have selected. The sound is fine.
The problem that I have is that it uses batteries fast. I am spending more than the player is worth on replacement batteries.
The other problem is that if I want to play a song that is later on the CD it has trouble finding it. It can stop in the middle of my CD and takes a long time to start again after stopping.
It also has difficulty with playing some songs after 1/2 of the CD is played. I have to go back to the start of the CD.
I did not like the headphones; they just fall out of my ears. I use one from my walkman that is fine.
It also does not hold a great amount of music. I guess I will need to bring a few CD's with me and change them when needed.

Summary: I'm updating my review...
Review: Now that I've played with this a little more, I have a complaint, and that is that the player puts about a 1 second gap in between tracks on cds (mp3 and audio) when playing back. it's a little annoying, but nothing to return the player over.

Summary: Fantastic deal for the price
Review: This player is the same as the RioVolt SP100 with the exceptions that:

1) there is no remote control (it's optional)
2) the LCD is not backlit
3) the firmware isn't upgradable

I didn't need any of those features, and as such bought this model and saved $30+ dollars. I've been extremely pleased with this player.

Summary: Jr thats what you pay for
Review: RioVolt is definitely a good player with 120-sec anti-shock. Mp3 CD spins for about 20 seconds and plays without spinning for about a minute and a half, than the cycle repeats. If you walk at the time it spins music might pause for couple of sec, if you don't stop, or balance the player out.

It doesn't have any accessories that usually come with RioVolt, besides headphones. So you get what you pay I guess.

Summary: okay
Review: yes it plays mp3's on CD's... but its skip timing isnt as good as i've seen on other players. Not bad little gadget.
