Summary: no jog dial
Review: a good cd player. except for the fact that there is no jog dial. how do they expect for you to go to your favorite songs? listen to each one by one? or remember the cd track by heart? c'mon guys at sony. give me a break. just for that reason i rated it 1 star. yeah...it's that big of a deal.

Summary: Impressive
Review: From the slick, ultra-slim design to the rechargeable battery pack with a long playing time (55 hrs. with the pack, 95 more hours with the additional AA battery plug)and optical line out, Sony delivers a top-quality MP3/ATRAC cd player with a back-lit remote. The software to make the ATRAC files is easy to use (at least I had no problems with it), and the sound is excellent. The only flaws thus far are the weak headphones supplied (get Sony's MDR-33 or MDR-55 headphones instead), the cumbersome additional battery plug, and the needless charging stand (you can charge the batteries by simply plugging the cd player into the wall and press the "charge light" on the side).

Summary: Excellent
Review: I bought the D-NE1 to replace a D-CJ01 which a friend of mine left in a phone booth in central London (...). I liked the D-CJ01 a lot, but the D-NE1 is better in almost every respect: slimmer, better looking, more solidly engineered, and excellent sound. although perhaps with not as much eardrum-melting 'gain' as the D-CJ01 was capable of (probably just as well). I got the Sony Fontopia headphones to go with it (cant remember the model number exactly), as I never much care for the ones Sony supplies, and this combination is great. I also like the charging stand, since it eliminates the need to plug and unplug wires.

My only quibbles are 1) the remote; somehow the controls seems a little less intuitive and a little more fiddly than on some other models, but I'll get used to it, and 2) the angled headphone wire socket is a little too close to the 'open' button.

Haven't tried the Atrac software.

Summary: SENDS ELECTRIC SHOCKS TO YOUR HEADPHONES
Review: i bought this because i wanted something tiny. parts of it are designed well, but all of this is irrelevant, because if you move it at all it shorts, sends a shock through your head phones to your ears, and stops playing

Summary: IT REALLY IS TRUE ATRAC CD PLAYERS DONT PLAY MP3S
Review: I DID NOT HAVE THIS MODEL BUT IVE HAD 2 OTHER SONY ATRAC CD PLAYERS WITH THE SAME RESULTS, WHEN I BURNT A CD OF MY FAVORITE SONGS WITH 150 TRACKS THE SONICSTAGE PROGRAM SKIPPED 4 OR 5 OF MY SONGS DURING THE WRITING PROCESS. AND ALL OF THE MP3 FILES WORKED PROPERLY. OK NO PROBLEM RIGHT? WRONG. I FIGURED THAT THE SONICSTAGE WAS JUST A CRAPPY PROGRAM, BUT THEN SOMETHING HAPPENED THAT REALLY MADE ME ANGRY AS A SONY CUSTOMER, I BURNT ANOTHER CD WITH NERO AND IT CAME OUT PERFECT ALL THE SONGS WERE THERE, (I BURNT THE SAME CD AS I DID WITH SONICSTAGE KEEP IN MIND)BUT WHEN I PUT IT IN MY CD PLAYER I NOTICED THAT CERTAIN TRACKS WERE THERE BUT WERE NOT PLAYING, ALL I HEARD WAS SILENCE, IT WAS LIKE THEY WERE GHOST TRACKS. I MUST HAVE WENT THROUGH 20 DIFFERENT CDS, (AND MUCH FRUSTRATION) UNTIL I PUT MY CD IN MY PANASONIC MP3 CD PLAYER AND GUESS WHAT PEOPLE, EVERY SONG WORKED NO PROBLEM, THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH THE ATRAC CD PLAYERS, ITS JUST THAT NOBODY HAS RUN INTO THEM YET, BUT ONE DAY WHEN YOURE EXCITED TO BURN THAT NEW CD WITH YOUR FAVORITE SONGS, YOU MAY BE DISAPPOINTED IN THAT SOME OF YOUR SONG WONT PLAY, AND YOU WILL BE TORTURED BY THE THOUGHT THAT IT IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR CD BURNER, AND YOU MIGHT THROW THAT CD AWAY, AS I HAVE DONE MANY TIMES,WHEN THE CD IS COMPLETELY FINE, IT IS THE ATRAC CD PLAYER. THIS UPSET ME BECAUSE I THINK SONY HAS THE BEST LOOKING AND BEST QUALITY ELECTRONICS OUT THERE. SO I YOU WANT TO DO THE SMART THING STAY AWAY FROM THESE ATRAC PLAYERS, OTHER THAN THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND ANY SONY PRODUCT TO BE YOUR FIRST CHOICE.

Summary: Great Product- Jon is a liar
Review: I had this CD player for a year and a half now. BTW jon...i kno wut ur problem is...u burned the cds with too high of a speed. i had that problem before until i figured out that if u set the burning speed of the cds to 24x, the mp3 cd will work perfectly. Too fast of a burning speed will causes writing errors on the cd which nero or any other burning program cannot correct. Try setting your burning speed to 24x max. However, I do not use this cd player anymore due to that i got an ipod photo. But sometimes i still use this cd player since it is great. This CD Player doesn't have a clear quality but thats's expected because all the other CD players do not have good quality either. Since this CD player is 200 dollars tho, you can get an ipod for 100 dollars more and it is a better deal.

Summary: irresponsible reviewer
Review: I have been looking at the line of Sony Atrac/mp3 players here on Amazon, and I have noticed a curious thing. A person by the name of evilmicrowizard has posted the same review on all of them stating that they do not play mp3's. The problem is that they do, I have owned a sony atrac/mp3 player for over a month and it certainly does play mp3-cds.

I'm not going to try and guess his motives, but he is being very irresponsible and trying to hurt the sales of Sony cd players by lieing about them.

as for the cd player it is the best cd player I have ever owned. the battery life alone is a great reason to buy it. and unlike the cheap panasonic models it will actually resume from where you stopped, and it has new-fangled features like fast forward, which the panasonic mp3-cd players lack.

Summary: Watch out for the software
Review: I have no complaints about the hardware. My complaint is with the horrible software that comes with it. The Simple Burner is just awful. It's limited- you can't edit tracks like you can with Nero and it crashes. I lost three hours of work when the Simple Burner "encountered an error" and had to close! It's a damned shame because the Atrac3 format is excellent with a wonderful sound and more can be put on a disk than with MP3.

If you're going to sell a product that can compete with MP3, you should have decent software and better support!

Summary: Good sound, silly mistakes.
Review: I have really enjoyed my new gadget. It sounds good, has enough volume, unless you enjoy hearing loss. Even the squished Atrac compression suprised me. However, some of the basic playback features I found lacking. When playing compressed files, the CD stops spinning after gathering enough info and putting it into memory. This is cool, because the spinning uses the most battery life. However, there is a fairly lengthy gap between each cut. This is not a problem with most music, but if you have a continous mix CD, then you lose the feel of the DJs performance every time a new track is dropped. This is my first device of this sort, so maybe this is not unusual, but it is aggravating. Otherwise it's a great little gadget.

Summary: Clarification
Review: In response to the person below me, this *does* play MP3s. You can, however, only use Sonic Stage to burn ATRAC3 files. You can use Nero or even Windows to copy MP3s onto a CD.
