Summary: HOW TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE!
Review: Well.... I've had the same problems as you guys
playback recording etc... well I got it from bestbuy online.
and they recommended accessories as SONY miniDV tapes.
Well... DON'T USE SONY with this camera!
It broke mine. I brought it in service and they recommended
either SHARP or Panasonic. To tell you the truth...
I don't think you will have ANY luck finding sharp miniDV
anywhere. Unless you work with them and have some for testing purposes heheheh. :) Well use Panasonic. I could not return
mine because 15 days trial period was over. So now I am using
Panasonic. :) Good luck people!

Summary: This product is junk
Review: A large portion of these cameras will not play back the video they record. Since this is one of the core functions of a camcorder, this product fails miserably.

Yes, it has cool features. Yes, the price is great. None of this overcomes the fact that you can't use it to playback recorded video.

So far I have had an opportunity to test out three of these cameras and all three failed in the exact same way. What are the chances that the one you buy will have the same problem? It looks pretty probable.

Summary: wish it worked
Review: I'd really like to recommend this camcorder, but I can't. It has a lot of very good features at a great price, but the old addage, you get what you pay for applies here.

The first one I had lasted a couple weeks. I only used it a couple hours when it started having problems playing back recorded video. First, random pixels all of the screen, then lines through the video, and finally it would not play back anything.

So I returned that one and ordered another. While waiting for that one to arrive I found the reviews here and noticed simular problems listed. As soon as the new camcorder arrived and set it up on my desk and started play back and recording. Within 2 hours of use (just sitting on the desk) the camcorder would no longer play back anything. It just gives you a blue screen.

Tech support has not answered my email request. This one is going back too, and I'm going to look for another brand.

Summary: ...good quality for first time user
Review: It is really easy to use and the quality is good. I used it during my trip in Disney. I am very satisfied with this one for its performance and price. I am still figuring out how to connect it to my camcorder to make movie and digital pics.
The video performance is great. For first time user, this camcorder is a great choice.

Summary: Distored playback
Review: I love this camcorder...ONLY if it works. Unless you want to take a chance because of the price (thats what i did), stay away from this camcorder. I worked for a few days. The playback function started NOT working. It became distored and garbled.
I love all the features this camcorder has. I even bought a extra 64 smartmedia card for this camcorder. .....I just requested a return from Amazon. The UPS guys just picked it. Will see if i get the full refund or not. The nearest Sharp servie center is 175 mile away in NY, none in PA.

Summary: Tempting, but...
Review: The picture quality of the recorded video is really not any better than my 3-year old analog Hi 8 camcorder.

The medium to low light performance is poor. The recorded images were very noisy in average to low light conditions.

The menu system was fairly easy to use. Once through the manual was enough.

The recorded sound quality is very good.

The price is very good.

If I was a first-time camcorder owner, I would be pleased with this product. I don't recommend it to someone moving up from an analog camcorder to a digital camcorder.

I returned mine after a week of use.

Summary: Camcorder worth its price
Review: The camcorder has an incredible 26x optical and 780x digital zoom. This was the first thing which made me choose this camcorder. All others are way too pricey with less features.

The pictures taken by the camcorder [640x480] would need a little editing to perfect it before you intend using it. But the quality of both picture and the video is superb in good direct lighting, decent in low light or indirect light. The Gamma/Brighter adjustment button, which can fine-tune the exposure to brighten skin tones when they appear dark without changing the overall exposure level, is a cool feature.

But what really makes the camera is its Canon Lens. I bought a Canon SLR recently and was amazed by the lens quality. According to me, a lens can make or break any camera or camcorder. It is a very important feature to look out for. It has plenty of other cool features which I did not find in many camcorders.

The only problem with Sharp is that it has very bad customer service. I had bought the camcorder in Costco and had not noticed a tiny wedge in the body near the viewfinder. It was 3 months since I had purchased it and had hardly used the camcorder and perfectly sure that I had not dropped it or hit it. Sharp customer service did not even want to listen to me and blatantly said that I could have dropped/hit the camcorder.

Otherwise it is a good camcorder for the price. Alas... If only they had better customer support I would give the camcorder a full FIVE.

Summary: possible use of defective parts during manufacturing
Review: although the camera was economically priced for all the features it has to offer, there seems to be a manufacturing defect with my camera. i've tried to contact sharp customer service to try to resolve the problem i was having with playback ( garbled video as well as distorted audio ) they tried to tell me that it maybe the brand of DV tape i am using, but after reviewing this site and seeing that i wasn't only person with this problem, i've come to believe that there is only one reason why the camcorder is failing--- obviously, they must have used a bad batch of parts in the manufacturing process....currently my camcorder is at an authorized service center for repair...i hope that they can fix the problem..i only had the camera less than three weeks...when and if i get the camera back i'll give a updated review of the camera in it's entirety.

Summary: Good performer.
Review: I've used JVCs for years, and I think this Sharp is every bit as good as the JVCs, and maybe a bit less quirky. This model was a great bargain, costing 1/3 what I paid for a JVC of essentially the same specs, with some distinct advantages. The optical (true) zoom is powerful (26x), and the digital (not as good as optical) image stabilization makes it pretty functional (my JVC has 100x zoom, but w/o stabilization, a tripod is an absolute must to shoot anything worthwhile beyond 10x). In addition, the SmartMedia Card for digital stills is fine, and anyone who complains about the need (?) for a slow serial port to view these still images has obviously not discovered the wonderful world of cheap & easy to use USB (Viking or sanDisk) memory card readers.
In addition, unlike the JVCs which require MultiMedia cards (harder to find, smaller capacity and more expensive per meg), or even the Sonys (proprietary Memory Sticks: same drawbacks), the Sharp uses SmartMedia, which are small, cheap, readily available and almost as good as CompactFlash memory cards. The video & sound quality are fine on this unit, better than anything you could have bought a few years ago at any price, and again, at a great deal. Overall, it's a winner.
