Summary: Great scope -with a couple of qualifications...
Review: I own an ETX-90 (original non-electronic ver) and am delighted with the optical and mechanical design. Unfortunately, I remain a little concerned about Meade's quality control as the secondary mirror fell off inside my scope when it was a few months old, and a friend says his secondary baffle came loose. Still, if you don't get a flawed unit the optics are a terrific value and the Super Plössl 26mm eyepiece included is very good, as well.x

Summary: Great Amateur Scope!
Review: I read all the reviews before buying ... and was a little worried that it might not meet expectations. But it has worked out great.

It was a thrill to see Saturns rings and view Jupiter. The moon comes through bright and clear. You can see other heavenly objects (even galaxies!) with it. You won't see galaxies and nebula in the same detail as you do in books - but you'll see the dim shading of them in parts of the sky.

It's compact and portable - so you can bring it to the beach, etc. Our neighborhood is way to bright to use it for much night-sky viewing - so portability was a must.

A scope that gave a better view, at the same price, would have been too big. And a better portable would have cost too much. This one was just right for us. If price is not a problem, get a better portable scope. If size is not a constraint, then spend less on a larger scope. Otherwise, this one will do fine.

MUST HAVE ADD ONS: A tripod (see my review there). The computer controller (you'll NEVER find a lot of the night sky objects without one). One or two good night sky books (to help you find cool objects like binary stars and galaxies).

COMPLAINTS: It would be nice for this (and all scopes) to see some pictures of how night-sky objects will really look with it before buying.

Summary: Its almost complete
Review: I recently purchased an EXT-90EC and I was impressed with its smooth look and design. But I was disapointed to find out that the eyepiece that is included is only a 26mm which allows you to see 48x. Be prepared to buy at least one or two additional eyepieces. If not your veiwing ability look like that of a pair of binoculars. Had I been told what the viewing ability was going to be I would have ordered the eyepieces ahead of time.

Summary: Having fun...
Review: I recently purchased this scope and I am pleased with it.

It's a great terresterial scope as well as a very good astro scope.

I would recommend these accessories. lenses - 9.7 Super Plossal, 15 Super Plossal, 2x Barlow, 6.7 UWA auto focuser, field tripod, polarizing filter (look at full moon with contrast), auto-controller is great too.

Buy yourself at least a simple star chart so that you can find the right star to align it by and remember that that 26mm Super Lense (comes with scope)isn't parfocal with any others. So, be prepared to focuse when switching.

The auto focuser is a definite must as hand focusing can move the scope too much at high magnification.

Aviod getting lenses that will take the magnification above 200x. While it will do it... unless you buy the UWA 6.7, the extra magnification won't be worth it.

Avoid all series 3000 lenses as they are just junk except for terresterail views.

That's about it, hope this helps.

Summary: Best imagequality I've ever seen.
Review: I'm pretty new to telescopes, but I can sure tell you that this ts REALLY ROCKS!

I had to buy this in sweden though (otherwise the telescope would pretty easy get stopped in the toll for 3 or 4 months), and the charges for the toll, import etc, got up to be almost double the price that is here. (...).

The telescope is excellent for amateur astronomers like me, who dont know the names of every visible star in the sky.
The resolution and quality of the picture you get when you look at the sky are just astounding.

I just gotta say that this telescope was worth ALL the money, I dont regret anything about buying this fine piece of equipment.

Creds to meade for the excellent quality of this product!!

regards, Henrik

Summary: This is a must have Telescope for people new to astromony
Review: I've had my telescope for over six months and wouldn't trade it for anything. This is a great telescope and it is very crispt in the viewing of stars and planets. I love it and for the money it can't be beat. If you are new to astronomy you need this scope. I saw Saturn a few nights ago and saw the rings very clearly. I brought a dew shield and two more eyepieces for it and they helped make the scope even more fantastic. I got a 18 mm wide and 13.3 mm super wide Meade eyepieces. You will also need autostar for a tour of all that is in the sky at night. You can see 14,ooo objects and hundreds more if you download them from the internet with an adapter which cost a few extra dollars more. I bought a deluxe field Meade tripod. You need this one because it keeps the image that you are looking at stable. This is the best telescope you can buy for the money and the best type too. I love my ETX-90 EC and plan on keeping it for the rest of my days of viewing the universe.

Summary: Unbelievable
Review: is the only word I can use to describe my new ETX-90EC. Like others have said, this scope does not come with much, so be prepared to start shelling out more dough-- but the quality of this scope and versatility still make it so much a value. First things I bought was a 9mm eyepc, a 2x barlow, and the right-angle viewfinder. The right-angle viewfinder is the only thing I will fault Meade on for making me buy, it should have been included, the straight-on viewfinder it comes with is hard to use, or unusable in some instances.

Second night out with this scope, within 15 minutes I was pointed at Jupiter trying to figure out where the light was reflecting that made those 4 tiny dots, and then realized it was 4 of the moons, and then I could see more. Way, way cool. Someone else said to try and avoid going over 200x, with the barlow and the 9mm I was at about 275x, and it was a little fuzzy, but pretty darn good for being around a lot of streetlights and in the city.

When you buy, also check out the MIGHTY ETX site (...) there are some hints on what accessories a must.

Other than the right-angle viewfinder, I would suggest a barlow (2x), and also the good (...) tripod. I got the cheapie 882 (...) tripod and cannot do polar. That is a little bit of a pain to track objects without the #497 autostar.

Summary: What a telescope!
Review: My father ground an 8-inch mirror and made his own reflector when I was just a kid. I remember him calling me outside to see each awesome celestial treat he had centered in the eyepiece. I was blown away as a kid, and here, 40 years later I am blown away again! My interest in astronomy was rekindled several months ago, and I started researching like crazy. I jumped on a Nexstar 80 GT and had fun with it for 2 weeks. I had to have MORE! I sold it and bought the ETX 90. I also sprung for a 2x barlow lens, and a 9.7 super plossl lens. What a treat! Even within San Diego's city limits, this telescope affords me incredible views of the moon, Jupiter, Saturn (yes, the Cassini division is clearly visible!), Venus, etc.

I'm so tired! I cannot pull myself away from this telescope at night! Last night I saw M42 (the orion nebulae) and M31. I am venturing into deep space objects with surprising quality! I can't wait to get it to the desert! I have only two VERY small complaints. The star pointer was a bit challenging to align, however, I did it perfectly. My gripe is that it's impossible to access at times when viewing overhead! You've GOT to replace it with a 90-degree one. And the other thing is that focusing becomes VERY difficult at times in terms of just getting your hand on the control! You've GOT to buy the optional automatic focuser. And Autostar 497. So you spend more, but oh boy, is it worth it!!!!

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Small Aperture, High price
Review: Ok, sure the telescope will find the target automatically, but because of its small objective lens diameter your view of deep space objects is severely limited. I advise spending those 600+ dollars on an 8-inch Orion Skyquest dobsonian or a 10-inch Mead dobsonian, you'll have to learn your way around the skys but, its a far more rewarding experience and the images are much better.
