The speaker features an 8-inch cone woofer, a heavy-duty acoustic suspension woofer in a space-conscious cube cabinet, all at a budget-conscious price. Speaker-level inputs and outputs let you put it inline with your speakers (for stereo or home theater), while a line-level input is perfect for explicit use as the ".1" LFE (low-frequency effects) channel in a 5.1 surround setup. When used in conjunction with smaller, bookshelf-type speakers, the subwoofer extends system capability to full-range frequency response, down to a respectable 30 Hz. With larger, floorstanding speakers, the sub helps shoulder the burden of reproducing low-frequency information. It's not video shielded, so don't place it too close to a TV or computer monitor. If it's on the floor, though, it'll likely be far enough from your screen to negate any video distortion that might otherwise result from the speaker's magnet being too close to a monitor.
