Summary: Sony falls short in execution of campanion stand for TV
Review: This product falls short in design, materials, and execution. The unit comes well packed, but even so I had to return the 1st one, and then had to reinforce the bottom of the second stand I received since it was cracked. Sony has chosen to use particle board with edge banding for most of the parts. A mild hit (shallow bump on carton) lead to compression of the base edge banding & a recess was left when the particle board crumbled. The base is not on wheels, sits on particle board skids about 1/2 inch above the floor, and is likely to be easily damaged by a mild hit with a vacuum. The unit requires complete assembly, and the directions are very basic, consisting mostly of drawings with brief captions. I found one support column to be 1/8" longer than the other and was able to correct this mid-assembly. Someone without a good woodshop would have problems doing this without damaging the finish. Fit and finish are marginal. I would recommend against purchase of this item. Sony could improve this product by using MDF instead of particle board, providing better quality control in placement of predrilling and better depth control in predrilling for the cams that turn to secure parts together. Also, the edge banding is inferior, and does not even go around the entire base of the unit (rear is omitted). Provision of wheels to move the unit for cleaning and to elevate the base would be a good idea. I have loved Sony electronics for years, but this stand is a very poor stepchild that failed to receive the attention needed for a good product.
