Rating: Summary: Very disappointed with this Review: I liked the layout of this remote, and with the learning capabilities, I figured that this would be ideal. However, I couldn't get it to "learn" a single command. It kept showing the ERROR sign. When I programmed my CD player with the only code that would work, only one function of that worked...and that was the wrong key! Needless to say, it got returned.

Rating: Summary: Works Great!! Review: I purchased one of these about 3 months ago and have experienced none of the problems such as clock resetting as mentioned by some of the other reviewers.RCA may have improved the design (Mine is a 810B) or possibly the reviewer was using standard batteries instead of alkalines.
I really love the macro functions. Since I have a home theater system it was always a pain turning everything on and off one at a time. Now I just hit one button. I also programmed a macro to switch the tv and satellite receiver to high definition mode and back. This was great for my wife who always had some difficulty in accomplishing this.
The only fault I have found is the learning function in a couple of instances required two or three tries before it worked but it did learn most commands on the first try.
I think this is a great buy for the money.
Rating: Summary: ALMOST Worked Perfectly! Review: I purchased this remote blindly based on price and features. It was a breeze to setup, and those keys which where not "pre-programmed" were easily learned by the remote. I had everything setup and running and then the PROBLEM - it wouldn't work my TV's "TV/VIDEO" button! I tried every code without success. I tried to "teach" the remote the code from the OEM remote without success. Unfortunately I had to return it and am in search of a replacement with similar features.TV in question is a Proscan 36" (36109). Pretty ironic since RCA makes Proscan! Oh well, tis' the world of electronics...
Rating: Summary: Very good remote, but... Review: I, like you if you are shopping for a universal remote, have many different brands of components, each with their own remote. Cable box, big-screen TV, DVD player, receiver, VCR, etc. It's annoying to have four remotes in front of you at any given time. So, after a bunch of research, I bought this remote controller. What I like about it is that I can program any key to do anything from the original remote. It seems like some of the other reviewers have missed this feature and have thus unintentionally mislead others. You can take this remote, set it an inch or two from the "original" remote, press the button you want it to learn, and it will do so. Sounds confusing, but here's an example. I set up some of the remote buttons to do the slow-motion forward and backward for my DVD player. I set up buttons to change the DSP mode and input source on my receiver. There's no button on this remote that says "DVD" for input source, so I set the "Tape" mode button to be DVD. You can do whatever you want. I set up buttons to change the picture mode on my TV. If the original remote has a button for it, you can make it work on this remote (at least in my case I was able to). This upside is also the downside, however. I am not looking forward to the batteries dying and having to reprogram the thing from scratch. When this happens, I am going to write down what I programmed or put little stickers next to the buttons. Also, the remote is not something your guests will be able to instantly figure out if you have programmed it. For me, though, this is not an issue as I am the type who likes to have my remote always in hand. Finally, the last thing I don't like about it is that you have to change modes so often to do things. If I am using it to control my DVD player and want to turn up the volume, I have to switch to audio mode, turn up the volume, and then switch back. I tried to program it to use the signals from multiple remotes in one mode (i.e. have the volume in DVD mode control the receiver) but was unable to do so. It doesn't seem like it's capable of this. I would recommend this product to others if you have a knack for programming things and want to take the time to read the manual. Just using the factory codes will give you just minimal control over your components, as others have written. It's in the custom programming mode where this remote shines.
Rating: Summary: Need programmer Review: If you don't have exact this AV stuff for this remote is programmed for, you will be disapointed. But if you can use programmer & programm this stuff - it will meet your expections.
Rating: Summary: You definately get what you pay for!! Review: If your tired of buying all those 4 and 5 unit controllers at KMart, Walmart, and Target because they either don't work well, eat up your batteries or do not have the right functions then this is the remote for you! I've tried them all and got sick and tired of screwing around with mediocrity this one is absolutely fantastic! I have DSS, DVD, tuner, tv, vcr all being controlled with one remote now and all of the functions for each are operable. Even the DSS favorites and menu's. This thing can learn what your needs are too, not to mention the macro's that you can write. As an example I wrote one that turns the tv on, changes it to channel 3, turns on DSS, turns to my digital music channel, turns on my tuner at level 6 volume all at the touch of one button. It is very easy to perform all of these tasks. I was fully programmed for all units and writing my first macro within minutes of unwrapping. Good Job RCA!
Rating: Summary: Works, with quirks Review: The downers: 1) Backlight button is hard to find in the dark and doesn't stay lit long enough to find the obscure button you are looking for 2) VCR buttons are way down at the bottom. With TiVo this is awkward since they are the most frequently used buttons and gives me a bit of a thumb cramp. 3) Only preprogrammed for the Phillips TiVo, not the Sony version 4) Learning capability is limited to about 20 buttons, which may seem like a lot, but not enough if the codebook is missing one of your remotes. 5) The bug: When backlight is on, sometimes the remote forgets what time it is (resets to 12:00), switches to TV mode and turns off the backlight. I gave up on using backlight mode. 6) (2 year update) The most frequently used buttons require intense pressure to activate. As a TiVo user, This means FF/Play are almost useless. As of this update, I'm in the market for a new remote, and I've lowered my rating. The uppers: 1) Comfortable to hold, nice form factor and weight. 2) Good battery life. I've had it for a year and never replaced the batteries. 3) Primary buttons (volume, channel, arrows, select) are easy to identify by their finger-feel 4) Nearly all functional keys are capable of learning (The clear key can't learn... it cancels the learning function) 5) Taking out the batteries does not erase the programmed functions (For those of you paying attention, I put back the same batteries I took out).
Rating: Summary: Very unstable Review: The first one I bought four days ago kept resetting itself to 12:00 (like another customer reported) and goes into TV mode whenever it likes (just like the other customer said). I took it back and got a new one which started to do the very same thing after less than a day. I am taking it back and getting a different brand. I have wasted three days already. This is a [poo] remote control. I am warning you. Don't waste your time with this product!
Rating: Summary: Totally useless - definitely goes back Review: The specs surely look good: learning, eight different devices, home theater functions. That's why the disappointment is even worse. My TV is recognized alright, but it's not just missing "fancy" stuff such as OSD and setup keys - it doesn't even have the very basic AV button. I mean, the key is there but it simply does nothing (it works on VCR, though, so it's not a problem with the key itself). And although the remote is defined as learning (more on that later), for some reason it refuses to learn this particular function. I really need AV, because my cable box is on AV1 and my DVD is on AV2. So I really can't use it for TV. My VCR is recognized as well, depending on how you define "recognized". After the TV sutff, I am not surprised that it doesn't have some very basic functions such as speed, OSD and search. I can probably even get used to the horrible layout of the VCR keys. But whenever I press VCR, it doesn't just select the device - it also turns it off. I want to select VCR with the innocent intention of pressing pause, and I end up turning the whole VCR off. No way to avoid this. So I really can't use it for VCR. My home theater receiver is sort of recognized. I can turn it on and off, and I can even change the volume. The remote is defined as a home theater device, but none of the home theater functions is supported, of course. But the worse part is that the input source selection keys are all messed up. The CD key selects tape, TV selects tuner, and all other selection kesy are non-functional - no way to select DVD or CD, for example. So I really can't use it for audio. My cable box is not recognized at all. And my DVD is not recognized at all. Don't worry, you say. It's a learning remote, you say. Spend a few minutes and transfer the codes from your existing remotes. That's what learning remotes are for. But there's a catch. Only when I started to teach it I realized that it can only memorize some 20 keys or so. Then it simply says "memory full". The cable box alone has more keys than that (43, to be exact). No room for the DVD keys at all, no room for any additional keys on any other device, not even enough room for decent cable box functionality. 54 keys this thing has, and it can't even replace one single standard remote. Not a good value for your money. Go look somewhere else.
