Summary: Unbelieveable!
Review: Simply incredible. I wear these headphones everyday without exception, I use them for everything. From playing Counter-Strike to mowing the lawn, I have already gotten my moneys worth out of them and I have had them for 4 1/2 months. To mow the lawn, I use a riding lawnmower and using these and my CD player I can virtually block out the rumble of the mower. I have also used them on airplanes, and yes, again they are effective. If you are hesitant on buying these, don't be. Coming from someone that practically lives in his headphones, these are the best audio buy I have ever made. Because of these I will be a loyal customer of Sennheiser. Just one word of advice, you hear EVERYTHING with any recording. Also pick your hardware accordingly. Sometimes the static will drive you nuts as it does me with mp3s if they aren't high quality recordings...

Summary: Buy these instead of Sony 700's!
Review: If you are a DJ -- buy these before you even think about buying sony's 700's which are so INFERIOR! The 280's not only have excellent sound, but when it comes to wear and tear, they make it whereas the plastic parts on the Sony's will just crack and crumble. Believe me, I'm a club DJ that has been through 2 pair of 700's in 3 years, and refused to keep giving my money to Sony when they failed to make improvements (I've talked to customer service several times).

Summary: Wow
Review: All in all, these headphones are amazing. The sound quality is unbeatable; Bolero in these headphones is nearly concert quality. The addition of their ability to block out noise is also very nice. My only complaint is their weight. They are pretty heavy compared to open and some closed headphones, but they are ok as long as you don't wear them for too long at a time (5+ hours a day)

Summary: All I can say is, WOW
Review: These cans are currently being offered well below MSRP -- no, they aren't in danger of being retired any time soon (confirmed with Sennheiser customer service) -- and are truly the best bang for the buck. Despite the very positive reviews, I had two reservations about purchasing the 280s: 1) the tight, uncomfortable fit; and 2) cracking in the plastic headband that some have commented on. I have a big ol' head where adjustable ball caps barely fit me. The 280s aren't tight at all, but rather comfortably snug -- what do you expect from a closed design? Shooting range ear protection/muffs are 3 times more tighter than these. Secondly Sennheiser claims to never having heard about the cracking issue but will repair/replace your unit with no questions asked under their 2 year warranty.

Although plastic in design, the product has a solid, quality construction (made in Ireland if you care). An advantage, as you may already know, is that most of the components are designed to be replaced due to wear or damage. I like the folding convenience of the 280s, but don't expect them to fit in your coat pocket.

After burning these puppies in for 24 hours, the audio quality truly impresses with details I've never noticed before in my Definitive Technology and Aperion Audio home theatre/stero systems. Initially I thought the bass was a *little* lacking, but the cans have developed a fuller, richer sound with burn-in. I'm tempted to buy a second pair so I don't have to carry mine from home to work all the time.

Summary: For fans of tight fitting audiophile quality headphones --
Review: As other reviewers have mentioned, the headphones are a bit tight. However, I've always found that to be a plus (I rarely wear these for more than 2 hrs anyway) because of the excellent close insulation.

I use these headphones primarily when working on my laptop. They are an incredible match with the Echo Indigo PC-card. It provides a super clean headphone amp with two jacks for any laptop. The added amplfication really makes these headphones sing. I've also used it with my iPod and have found that it generally provides enough power to keep these headphones singing.

Summary: excellent
Review: I've been using these headphones for about two months now. They are a solid piece of hardware capable of standing tough tests of durability--as well as sounding incredible. I recommend doing a 'burn-in' in order to increase the quality of sound.

Summary: High quality German headphones for a reasonable price
Review: I've owned various Sony and Pioneer DJ headphones. These are the most comfortable to wear, so far. A word of caution, these headphones faithfully reproduce the music. Meaning the frequency is flat - which is great! There is no discoloration, no unnecessary highs and lows. Why is this important? It will help you evaluate the real quality of your muisc source. You do your own adjustment by adding the necessary equalization setting.

Sidenote: if you're looking for headphones to compliment your portable music equipment, then get the excellent Sony DJ or Bose Triport headphones which will give you colored music reproduction - extra/artificial bass and treble response. I have nothing against them, I think they are great for those needs. The only problem is that their ear pads are uncomfortable for extended use.

These Senn headphones require a little bit more power to drive the speakers, so they are actualy best used for connecting to home systems that have amplification and equalization settings. I still use this for my Sony CD walkman, although I would have to crank up the volume.

The plus side, parts are easily replaceable - ear pads, head pads and cord. You don't have to be afraid in using and abusing them. The German-engineered speakers (the reason you are purchasing the Sennheisers in the first place) will last.

I have to warn you that the headphones will feel tight and sound bland when you first use them right out of the box. Use them constantly for a week or two and it will feel comfortable to your head. There is nothing rubbing against your ears to make you want to take it out. The environment attenuation is so great that you should NOT use it if you expect to be disturbed - phone call, door bell, etc.

Why 4 stars? Better design and material should be used to make it look and feel more classy, than plastic.

These are still made in Europe, so the price you are paying for is very reasonable especially when purchased from Amazon with the free shipping and tax.

One last word of advice, no matter what we all say the final decision will be at the hands (or heads) of the listener. So try all the brands at your local electronics store and don't be pressured into getting one without uisng them for an extended period. Your head, ears and pocket will thank you later.

Summary: Pretty good for sound but could be better comfort-wise...
Review: Just as you've probably read about 101 times by now, you do need to burn these in. After a while they just get better and better, at least their sound does. I'm not sure if it's just me, but the headband is more uncomfortable than I expected. I have a [$$$] pair of headphones that are more comfortable than these. I don't mind the fact that they squeeze your ears tight, but just the top headband bothers me, and considering that I want to wear them for at least a couple hours straight, this is annoying that I have to take them off every half hour or so to get a break from the external headache. Make sure you can live with the snug fit or the headband if you plan on using these for long periods of time. But as for the sound, you get what you pay for. Comfort... hmm... I'd think twice on that one.

Summary: Nice sound, kind of tight and heavy.
Review: I basically like these headphones, but they are kind of tight and are also quite heavy.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: great sound, a bit too tight.
Review: I like these headphones. However, one of the challenges of selecting headphones was finding units to try before purchasing. Some stores had SOME Sennheiser phones but no store carried THIS model OUT of the box, available to try-on first. Therefore, I bought these through Amazon WITHOUT trying them first.

They sound they produce is satisfying. The fit is tight.

Of course the whole idea of closed-cup is to screen-out extraneous sound while creating an sanctuary of sound under the phones. Designing a set of cups to accomplish this while keeping the phones comfortable is one of the challenges.

For me they serve the purpose of blocking most noise in my office and creating a world of sound. Also, others cannot hear what I am listening to. I have not tried wearing them while on an airplane yet. That is next.

Subtracting from the overall listening experience somewhat is the pressure the phones apply to the side of my head, especially while wearing glasses. I'm good for an hour or two, that's it.

The lesson I learned is NEVER to buy headphones, no matter what the reputation of the company, without FIRST finding a store that has them available to on. I started out with good intentions but caved at the end and took a chance.

In time, they may fit better. If that is the case, I will give them my highest rating.

Until then, three-stars.
