Summary: My First HDTV - I'm Pretty Impressed!
Review: ...I strongly recommend a download of the article from "Perfect Vision" as the review of the unit is comprehensive. What few shortcomings this set has are discussed fairly and accurately, and it's many strengths highlighted.

After a short and easy initial setup, I hooked up my standard 480I DVD player using component cabling. I popped my all-time favorite DVD (Blade Runner - The Directors Cut) into the tray, and took the set on a shakedown cruise.

Viewing 'Blade Runner' on a standard NTSC set has always been a mixed bag. This flick is revered as one of the most spectacularly photographed movies in cinema history. Frankly, viewing it on my old 27" Sony was a bit painful. So much definition, sharpness and color palette was lost, compared to movie house viewing. Viewing it low-def was a always a compromise, just an approximation of what the film actually looked like in the theatre.

I'm very pleased to report that viewing 'Blade Runner' on this set is a fully satisfactory experience! My perception is that seeing it on the 32UDX10S is not simply an improvement over viewing it on an NTSC set, but the film actually compares favorably with viewing it in a theatre. IMO, this is due to the fact that on a television set you are viewing the film by transmitted light, while in a movie house, you are seeing it by reflected light. The human eye tends to favor transmitted light viewing to reflected.

The image displayed by this set has incredible sharpness, color saturation and a very pleasing contrast range. My wife is more or less insensitive to the quality level of media presentations of all sorts. However, even she noticed the vast improvement in image quality without prompting.

You might ask the question of why I haven't given this set the full 5 stars, if I'm so impressed. The reason is this. When playing back 480i programming, an automatic conversion to 480p takes place. This set displays a mildly annoying level of noise, aliasing and moire artifacts around moving objects with strong vertical or horizontal lines. While noticable, to me this doesn't present a grave issue.

My understanding is that this is due to a weakness in the upconversion processor itself. I've been told that these artifacts will disappear if a native progressive scan DVD player is used.

If the upconverted image is this pretty (with the exception above noted) I just can't wait to get my hands on a progressive DVD player.

Summary: Excellent TV for an Excellent Price
Review: After a minor windfall I finally decided that my 10 year old 27" JVC just wasn't cutting it anymore. After much searching and debating, I decided on the Hitachi 32UDX10S, and I couldn't be happier.

Admittedly, it was a tough decision. Spending $ on a television is something I've never done before, and I didn't take the task lightly. It came down to flat-screen non-HDTV vs. regular screen HDTV. After debating the issue back and forth, I decided to go with the HDTV, mainly because of where I think the state of television is heading ... to HDTV only. That, and I realized that I reallyl don't need the flat screen.

The Hitachi was a bit difficult to set up. Running a coaxial cable into the ANT-A jack in the back is a PITA, because the threaded jack is in a "corner," surrounded on the top and side by about 1/2" edging. This makes getting one's fingers in there to screw on the coaxial cable very very difficult. Aside from this, however, setup was a breeze.

The picture on this TV is simply incredible. I can't even begin to describe the clarity, even from a standard coaxial connection. Viewing cable through the s-video connection is even better, and the component inputs for DVD bring out an amazingly clear picture.

I have two quick, minor gripes. First, when going through the component input, you can choose between the standard 4:3 aspect, or a widescreen 16:9 aspect. I always choose 16:9, but once the TV or DVD player are turned off, the set automatically reverts back to the standard 4:3. Second, although there is a front panel lock-out option, it doesn't lock out the power button. My one year old daughter is very intrigued by this button, which means I'm constantly turning the TV back on!

I would highly recommend this set for anyone looking for a new TV... The lack of a flat screen is nothing, especially when compared with the HDTV-readiness of the unit. The picture's great; the sound is good. It's as good as any Sony I've seen, and a comparable Sony... Save yourself the $ and get this TV and a progressive scan DVD player and you'll be a happy camper.

Summary: HDTV wow with low buck now
Review: I bought the 32" Hatachi and couldnt't be happier. I was amazed at the picture quality using the standard cable feed. Then I was in awe at the picture quality on dvd's. I thought I had seen it all until I got my HDTV/Satalite tuner. All I can say is WOW. The only draw back that I can see is the fact that I rarely leave my livingroom now and my wife is refering to my tv as "The other woman" seeing that I spend so much time with it rather than her. Mind you thats saying alot becouse she herself is a HD woman,... Thank you Hitachi, I truely now have the best of both worlds!!!

Summary: Entry level HDTV--Stay Away!!! (Now discontinued)
Review: I initially rated this tv a 4 star, and came close to rating it 5 stars. When I first got this set in May 2002, it had a beautiful picture, especially with progressive scan DVD. But by late Fall, the problems started. Like another reviewer, I started to have a discoloration problem with the tube. The first service tech (thank God I bought the extra warranty) said it was because I had a center speaker on top of the tv. Well gee, isn't that what they're for? He said it wasn't shielded, and all tv's over 31 in. have that problem. Really? I haven't seen any with that problem! I contacted Polk and they said the speaker WAS shielded, and they WERE to go on top of the set. Anyhow, two more calls and a new picture tube later, the picture is finally clear, but VERY, VERY hard to adjust. I long ago moved the center speaker to the floor well away from the tv, and strangely enough it sounds better. Thankfully this model has been discontinued, and my warranty states they have to exchange my set for another of my choosing if I have another problem. It won't be Hitachi. The second service tech praised that brand, and that may have been true at one time, but not any more.
Final update, 4-28-03: The discoloration problem, such as reds appearing on blue backgrounds, is back. Since I had bought the extra warranty, the store has finally agreed to take this piece of junk back. I will now try a Samsung 30" Widescreen HDTV.

Summary: Great Set
Review: I looked and looked for a new TV. Read every review I could find. After purchasing a 51" projection set from Hitachi, I was impressed with the picture and quality of their sets. The 32" was one of the few of that size that would fit into my cabinet. Although, initially, I wanted a flat-screen, I decided to go with the Hitachi. This is a great TV! Picture quality is stunning. Watching DVDs from my progressive scan player is an awesome experience. I have heard some negative reviews regarding sound quality, but have yet to experiance ANY problems in that area. Instead, the sound has been great. Not as good as my surround set-up in the den, but exceptional for a TV. So far, I am exceptionally happy with my decision and purchase. Hitachi makes great TVs!
