Summary: Bad OOBE
Review: Day 1. After wrestling this monster indoors & out of the box it really disappointed me. When I plugged in the AC cord I heard the 'chirp' of the high voltage power supply and the whirr of a fan. Pressing the power button changed nothing. There's no initial setup screen, no blue screen, no snow, nada, zip, nothing. The troubleshooting index suggests removing power & trying again in 5 minutes. No good. I've removed power & placed a fan near the vents in case condensation formed when the unit came in from its 50 degree Farenheit journey from Circuit City. We'll see where this goes.

Review: Very nice picture, but the fan that constantly runs is a major negative (especially in the bedroom).

Summary: Only 3 weeks old
Review: I have read all of the negative reviews and i am even suspect of RCA quality...but I had to buy the tv because the price was so low in comparison to other hd tv's. The fact that the hd tuner and the direct tv satellite receiver is in the set also helped my decision. So far...I love this tv. Progressive scan DVD's look wonderful and local PBS high definition programming is incredible just from an amplified indoor antenna. I see now why people compare the advent of HD to that of color television. Digitl cable is also very satisfying. Analog channels from the cable can appear gritty but I feel that is because i have seen the quality of digital and hd. I will buy the 5 year extended warranty at the end of my 30 day evaluation period and hope that my tv lasts a long time. I really am impressed with the picture quality.

Review: My husband did lots of research on this product and for the money we got a great deal. Great picture
We watch mostly DVDs so it did not really matter how the regular analog channels worked. Besides in probably a couple of years there will be a lot more HDTV channels available. The ones that are out there look great.
We also surf the web using the tv. We built a computer to do this and play our kids software on it.
The XBOX games are 100s better on this

Summary: Good TV if it is not in the shop
Review: I bought this TV in Jan 2002 and it was remanufactured so I got a good deal. I have been generally pleased with the TVs performance. The only real complaint is the lack of video output so I can tape a satellite program. As soon as I got the TV I noticed that there was an intermittant high frequency sound (like a flyback transformer makes, but louder). The sound would come and go. The shop got it and kept it for nearly 1 month. The entire time they said they were waiting on a transformer. Then when they brought it back, the slip said they had just glued down some ferrite beads (these can make the rining noises). I was mad that I had been told they were waiting for a transformer, when all they did was glue some beads down. Anway, about 3 weeks later, the noise came back. It was still intermittent and sounds different when watching an HDTV channel vs. an analog channel. In October 2002 I finally called the shop again. They have had the TV for 6 weeks now. They are claiming they are waiting on a transformer. I keep getting the run around about when the transformer is going to come in. I am contemplating just asking for my TV back and living with the noise. If they could get parts a little quicker, I would not be so upset and would have given this TV a 4* rating.

Summary: great TV - minor flaws
Review: We have had the TV for four months now.
I have experienced no problems with it.

The negatives -
The TV is heavy but no where near as bulky as even the smallest Projection TV.
The little fan runs all the time - But we connected the TV through a surge suppressor and turn off the power to the TV when not in use.
The tuner is not great - it does not pull in weak stations well - if you have good reception or cable or satellite this is not a problem.
The speakers are only OK but if you bought this TV you will be putting your sound through your surround amplifier. So who cares?
Your Grandmamma will be confused operating the remote.

The positives -
The picture is the biggest tube style, windscreen presently out there.
The TV has a very good picture with a DVD player. This is 95% of how I use the TV.
The TV is small enough to put a cabinet and not uglify your living room like a projection TVs do.
The picture is far superior to all the projection TVs I've seen. You can look at it from any angle and it always looks good.
The picture tube is practically flat.
The picture controls are fairly easy to adjust from the remote but you must read the instructions!
There are many different ways to adjust the picture quality to your own taste.
There are three different ways to view the picture - wide screen - standard and fill. This is standard operation for wide screen TVs - you presently wont find anything different in the operation of a wide screen TV. This is not a flaw as another reviewer suggested.

So far (knock on wood) I am very satisfied that I got the best "tube" TV for the money. Also Circuit City has an extended 5 year guarantee that is well worth it so I sleep pretty well at night.

Bottom line- I like.

Summary: Thompson blows it
Review: We got a PS38000 TV last October and have had a nightmare since. I am writing this for anyone who has either of the older RCA/Proscan models of this TV. I know you are out there and you have been eagerly awaiting the "redesign."

For those of you who were unaware, the TV was pulled from stores due to a "chip problem" which caused distortion and discoloration on-screen. We were told it was being re-engineered and the defective units would be replaced.

Finally, after 5 months, the new TV is being shipped to stores. I hate to say this but they have been redesigned for the worse. The picture on our older PS38000 is far superior to the 2 RCA sets we have seen.

I apologize to the other three of you posting on this site if you find that statement insulting, but it is true according to four sets of eyes: mine, the wife's, and a few salesmen. It just is not as sharp and dynamic. The previous Proscan was thrilling and the current RCA re-release is pedestrian.

Incidentally, there has been a $1000 price drop and I believe this is not solely attributable to consumer demand. I believe cheaper parts have been utilized. If not, then its even worse as the design is solely to blame.

Unfortunately, there is no hope of seeing a better Proscan version of this TV out. We have been told that if a version does get sold under the Proscan name it will be the exact same TV with no variation (except the name). There will be no upgraded parts.

I almost forgot.... if you bought a custom stand you know how good the old tv looked on it. It had an absolutely precise feel to it as all the lines matched up perfectly. Well, no more. The new TV has flat speakers and so all the lines are off. And no, there is no new stand to be had. You're simply out of luck. Normally, I would consider something like this nitpicking, but when you pay out 4 grand for an ensemble you should get top quality all the way around (that much=no compromises).

I could go on. We had a lot of problems with this TV that I have not mentioned, both with the TV's DM-1 unit and Thompson's customer service. But enough has been said.

I don't expect his posting to keep people from buying the TV, so here's something good. There is currently a free $500 progressive scan DVD being offered with the sale of this TV. If you like the TV and don't mind its negative history jump on the offer.

Summary: Looks nice initially, but later....
Review: I bought this television 4 months ago. All the methods suggested by RCA to get the TV to work were tried but nothing worked. Finally a RCA-approved local technician checked it and found that a component in the power supply board was bad. After this, a video converter board was found to be bad. I am going to cut my losses and sell this TV now and buy something else. If you scan the reviews here at Amazon and other sites, you will see that RCA/Thompson products have a much higher component failure rate than similar products made by Sony, Panasonic, JVC, etc. You pay a little less for RCA up front, but are taking a high risk later with repair bills and headaches. Think about it before you buy.

Summary: a great hdtv (you must read the manual )
Review: contrary to some reviews I am completely happy with this set. YOU MUST READ THE MANUAL AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION. I've had it for 4 months no problems dvds look great (especially with a progressive scan player) regular cable looks good, i never hear the fan (I looked in back to see if it was running after reading reviews here complaining of the noise) you should decide where to put it before delivery as its a heavy tv and do get the stand or really strong table/cabinet. also remember to read the manual and follow the set up instructions(trust me it saves a lot of the hassle others complain about).

Summary: DirecTV Reciever in the model???
Review: I would not buy this tv because of the DirecTV Reciever in it. DirecTV is a Satellite Company that is about to be "basically" bought out buy another Satellite company, DishNetwork. The DirecTV Reciever in this tv is going to be obsolete equipment. Don't believe it? Well, RCA has STOPPED making these recievers, so what does that tell you?

The High Definition part of this tv is great and all, but you can go out and get a much better quality HDTV w/out this useless receiver.
