Summary: A great TV at a great price
Review: I like this HD TV. The DVD's played on a progressive scan DVD player are very life like. The panaroma mode is a reasonable compromize when watching non wide screen format like regular TV channels.

Very simple to use.

Appearance is pleasing and even though its a picture tube TV it did not look overly bulky in my living room.

Rather than pay lots of money for a plasma I decided to go with this one.

Summary: I hope I am doing something wrong
Review: I wanted a wide screen monitor that I could use to watch DVD's. I hooked this monitor up to a progressive scan DVD player (the Toshiba, SD-43HT), using composite video cables I got from Radio Shack. The picture seems blurry in progressive scan mode (even with sharpness cranked up). I keep wanted to adjust the focus, just a tiny bit. I find myself switching off progressive mode to get a sharper image, even though it seems granier. I hope I am doing something wrong.

Summary: So Far, So Good
Review: I was about to give up on HDTV, as my first set, a Hitachi, was a disaster that was replaced and it too was defective. Samsung saved the day for me. But a big note of caution: it does take ahwile to get used to the 16:9 widescreen format because this set automatically converts all programs into that format, whether or not the program is in 4:3 mode (standard tv format) or 16:9 (many DVD's and all HDTV programs). At times people will appear "bloated." An example of this would be a local tv newscast. You can use the Aspect Ratio button to adjust the screen to a 4:3 mode (not avail. on Component inputs), but you will have bars on the left and right sides, and they warn you that viewing too much in that mode can "burn" an image on the tube. Another downside: analog cable is fuzzy and hard to adjust. However, Digital and HDTV Cable is breathtaking and many movies and programs are now being aired in the widescreen format, although at times I still see black bars on the top and bottom. DVD's as well. A neat feature is the "panoramic" mode (this feature is automatic on Component inputs). This is where this tv shines. When a movie is shown in widescreen format on DVD, or Turner Classic Movies or Fox Movie channel, etc., the panoramic mode brings out the full scope of the movie. In other words, it appears as if you're moving with the camera! It really puts the THEATRE in home theatre. An INVAR shadow mask helps keep colors true no matter how long the set is on as opposed to conventional masks. The on-screen menu is difficult to navigate and set up. Although I have mentioned a few flaws, it's well worth the price IF you're in to DVD's and HDTV as I am. If you just want a basic tv set with analog or basic cable, then I recommend a regular and cheaper tv set.

Summary: BEWARE BUYING FROM AMAZON.COM
Review: I would be extremely careful buying a large screen TV from Amazon.com. They have a no return policy on TV's larger than 27" that I was not made aware of upon purchase of the product. I received the television and realized after I had signed for delivery that there was some cosmetic damage to the TV's cabinet. I contacted Amazon.com the next day (which you can not do by phone; only e-mail) and was then alerted to this policy. They refused to provide me with a replacement TV.

The customer service was less than impressive and I would recommend buying this product from Circuit City or some other company that will guarantee the product and provide reasonable customer service. If you insist on purchasing from Amazon.com, I recommend you inspect the set thoroughly before signing for delivery. This is important b/c it is your only chance to refuse the product and Amazon.com will not make you aware of this.

All that said, it is a great HDTV monitor for the price point. It is a good anchor to a starter home theater setup. It displays progressive scan and HDTV signals very well. One thing to consider is that the set does not allow you to scale the aspect ratio for any of the HDTV inputs as many Sony sets do. This means that a full screen DVD will be stretched by the TV.

I would recommend this set for anyone looking to enter the world of HDTV at the sub $1000 price point. However, I would strongly urge you to consider buying from a electronics only dealer such as Best Buy, Circuit City, or Tweeter as Amazon.com can not match their level of customer service in this arena.

Summary: Check your connections and cables
Review: I'm not sure if anyone responded to Martin Crull's comments about this set having a blurry picture from a progressive scan DVD player. He wrote he hoped he wasn't doing anything wrong. Well it seems he was. He wrote that he used composite video cables. Wrong. Use good quality COMPONENT video cables from the component (or progressive) DVD output to the TV's component input. Make sure the DVD player is set to progressive output, AND for a 16x9 set. With a few picture setting tweaks, you should have an exceptional picture.

Summary: Beware negative reviews--this is nice set.
Review: This is a great value--especially if purchased from Amazon at its low sale price. The picture is absolutely fabulous in HDTV mode. Even non-HDTV programs look better than the very nice (non-HDTV) Sony I had. I did not notice any deterioration in the corners as others have reported. Also, the aspect ratio is easy to change according to one's taste. The sound is better than most TVs that do not have built-in theater sound.
