Description:

Philips' 50-inch, perfectly flat 50PF9956 plasma television will grace your office or home-entertainment center with its state-of-the-art elegance and high-tech sophistication. The set's widescreen (16:9) dimension closely matches the orientation of your favorite movies. Hook it up with a progressive-scan DVD player or an HDTV set-top box/receiver and you'll be set to enjoy vivid, detailed images on the set's native 1,366 x 768-pixel screen. It's even configured for PC use, accepting inputs as high as 1,920 x 1,152i (at 50 Hz).

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile, which also makes it perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. The 50PF9956 offers an astronomical 3,000:1 contrast ratio for incredibly rich, deep blacks.

The 50PF9956 includes Digital CrystalClear technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast, a comb filter, and advanced, 10-bit processing. A feature called Active Control Plus continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction, even adjusting for changes in ambient viewing light.

Philips invented Digital Natural Motion to eliminate "juddering" effects visible in moving pictures. Digital Natural Motion estimates picture motion and corrects unintended movements in both broadcast and movie material (DVD), resulting in smooth motion reproduction and excellent sharpness.

Enjoy split-screen viewing through the set's 2 integrated NTSC tuners, which give you the ability to watch 2 different channels simultaneously. Includes picture-in-picture (3 sizes, free positioning), 3-PIP multiwindow Mosaic, and 8-PIP Mosaic.

Audio/video inputs include the latest direct-digital HDMI input (with a supplied HDMI-to-DVI adapter in case you're already outfitted for the other digital video connection) and a pair of high-definition component-video inputs, one of which includes H/V sync jacks for use with a PC. Composite- and S-video and RF coaxial inputs round out the connection types, though there's also a .125-inch stereo headphone jack for use with optional headphones.

A set of side-mounted AV inputs accommodates spontaneous hookups with camcorders or gaming consoles, and you can use the set as a center speaker in a surround array (1 center-channel input) while feeding a powered subwoofer with a dedicated subwoofer output.

Onboard Dolby Virtual Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers, and the set's own pair is powered by a generous 15 watts per channel (x 2). The speakers use Philips' wOOx technology for stronger and higher-quality bass output than conventional TV speakers.
