Summary: I just love this TV
Review: My research convinced me that this is the best TV available inthis price range. If you want something with comparable quality in a larger set, be prepared for a substantial jump in price. I use this TV primarily as a monitor for my DVD player, which I have hooked up through the S-video input on the back of the set. The color quality and resolution really does justice to my DVDs. I got this TV at a great price by purchasing it as a "floor model" that had a couple of dings.

One thing I don't like about this TV is that the only S-video input is on the back of the TV. I use this input exclusively, and it's a bit annoying to have to get behind the TV every time I swap devices or need to take my DVD player somewhere (it's a little portable unit). There are composite video/audio inputs on the front, but they are useless to me. However, I'm guessing this won't be a problem for most people.

The speakers are quite good for speakers built into a TV. However, as with all TV speakers, they can't compete with high-quality, free standing speakers hooked up to a good receiver. Get yourself a good DTS or 5.1 channel audio system and don't bother with the speakers in the TV.

Summary: I’ll buy that for a dollar
Review: Overall, this is a superb product. The picture quality is crisp and clear – the various settings allow some great fine tuning for personal viewing preferences. Unfortunately my gripes are with everything but the picture tube.

The speakers are mediocre to good quality. Very limited bass range – the low frequency really lags and muddles the overall sound if you crank the bass setting too far. Treble is less of a problem. Just pipe the audio through a stereo system to augment the mediocrity. The casing and proportions really draw way too much attention to itself. The light gray color really makes this 27” look fully cubic in volume and mass. This silver color is a fad and the newer KV27FS-13 models are a darker gray tone. Look for later models to go even darker platinum. It just seems obvious that the attention should be on the screen – not the frame.

Too critical? Well, the undercarriage built in grips helped lug this thing out of the cardboard – halleluiah! And it’s a great value (if you don’t pay for shipping) for the updated picture technology – DVDs never looked so good:) Lastly, timing is everything – Sony had the lock on flat screens before many of the other manufacturers. Currently though, there are a few comparable companies out there building as good or better tubes. .... 4.5 stars because the tube is dead on great but the packaging needs help...I'll round up because I want to feel good about the hole in my pocket.

Summary: WONDERFUL TV
Review: So many great things to say about this t.v., but I'll be brief. First off the picture quality is tops, especially when viewing DVDs or playing video games. If your not happy with what you see, there are more than enough controls which allow you to fine tune it to your liking. The flat screen offers consitent brightness and clarity from corner to corner, and with a reduced glare. And the front panel video inputs make it a snap to connect temporary items like a video camera.

So what keeps this t.v. from getting 5 starts? Considering that televsion is an audio as well as visual experience, the speakers fall a little short of what you'd expect. Often times during typical use, the sound is flat. The only exception being when I hooked up my Sega Dreamcast. Then the sound quality was deep, rich, and expansive. Why can't the t.v. sound this way during regular viewing?

My other complaint is with the remote control. While ergonomic remotes are becoming the standard, Sony chose to offer the typcialy clumsy square shape. The other problem is that the Sony remote feels too light and cheap that I worry it won't hold up very long. A day in the life of a remote in my home means being sat on and dropped repeatedly.

Speakers and remote aside, you won't be disappointed in this television. If not for these two complaints, I would have gladly given the WEGA 5 stars.

Summary: Staggering picture quality, the best connection options
Review: The picture of the Sony WEGA ("vega") picture tube is easily the best that I have ever seen on a non-projection TV set. The screen really is totally flat, the picture is sharp and bright, and black is really black.

By itself, the picture quality is far and away the best reason for buying this TV. Only the Samsung flat TV comes even close, but the Sony still beats it in image and build quality. Sony has also given the WEGA four video inputs (in order of quality): component video, S-video and composite video. There are even video hook-ups on the front of the set to make it easy to plug in cam-corders.

With component video inputs hooked up to my DVD player, the picture quality is staggering. S-video input from my Tivo is good, but ultimately limited by the quality of my digital cable connection... which is unfortunately frequently poor.

Sony also includes a feature called "velocity modulation" which sharpens the details on the parts of an image that are not moving. At a "low" setting this improves the picture quality for cable TV sources, but doesn't seem to do anything for DVD. Settings at higher levels produce some unwanted "edge shadow" artifacts on cable TV pictures.

There are only two problems worth mentioning:

1) If you connect the audio output jacks of the TV into your stereo amplifier, the TV produces a loud "pop" when it is powered up or down. This is disconcerting and not good for the health of hi-fi speakers. However, if you are using a surround-sound (Dolby and/or DTS) receiver, this won't be a problem as the TV won't be in the audio path at all.

2) The universal remote is poorly laid out, and can't control multi-disc DVD players (like the Pioneer DVD changer that I own). The problem is that you can't switch discs from the remote.

Finally, be aware that this TV, like most others in its size bracket, is very heavy indeed. It's a 2-person lift and difficult to maneuver.

Even with the these faults, the Sony is still the best buy. If you don't want to spend major, major bucks on a huge projection TV, this is almost as good but at a fraction of the price.

Summary: Very fine television set
Review: The picture quality on this television set is very good. I see details in VHS movies that I just did not see before. A crease in a face, the texture of a wooden floor, the sweat on a brow. I am very happy with this selection. I spent more on a television than I anticipated, but I am very happy that I did. You really need to compare the picture quality side by side with any other potential purchase.

Summary: Theater on a Smaller Scale
Review: This is a great TV for smaller rooms. Being in an apartment, I had to go smaller. I love movies, and this is by far the best TV to watch it on (WEGA). It even has a movie setting for picture color. Here's my bullets:

Picture - exceptional picture, especially on DVD. Crisp and Clear

Glare - no glare whatsoever, unless your looking at it from the side and have a window on opposite you. No kidding.

16:9 - great for DVD movies that support it.

Connectivity - great amount of connections if you only have a VCR, DVD, satellite, and one or two more things. Also has S-Video, which is nice.

Style - just a great looking TV.

Overall, this is a good tv. It cost's a bit more than many other 27" TV's. But think about it. Once you see it, you'll fall in love with it. I'm glad I got it. As for some of you looking at the next model up (FS16)...all you'll be doing is buying Picture in Picture for $100 more. Think about that before you buy it.
