Summary: This TV has awesome sharpness, clarity and depth....
Review: This Toshiba 27AF42 TV is totally awesome! I read all the reviews before buying it, including the few negatives ones regarding horizontal and vertical line regularity.

If there is some irregularity when viewing boxes onscreen, I haven't noticed it, and the picture itself is mind-boggling! It's hard to believe that a "high definition" televison would or could be much higher definition than this one.

The "picture in picture" version costs a little more, and I've heard PIP isn't worth the cost, but with this set it might be a nice feature, given how sharp this set is.

I have two points to make, however, based on the other reviews I've read here. First, don't trust what you see in a TV store, with a large number of other brands' 27 inch flat screen models next to the Toshiba. Most stores apparently use some kind of signal splitter, which seems to degrade ALL the sets in the store, due to a loss of signal strength caused by the way they split the original signal.

Secondly, this Toshiba offers something else that my girlfriend and I saw immediately. It gives you a strong sense of 3-dimensionality, with objects in the background actually appearing to have depth. For example, a sitcom series was on TV last night (one that we've seen many times before on other television sets), and the scene of the room looked so "real", with depth and dimensionality I've never seen before on a television.

You will not be sorry you bought this TV, it is in a class by itself.....

Review: This TV is fabulous. The flat screen is a huge improvement over the old curved screen of the past.

Summary: Smartest TV Purchase I've Ever Made!!!
Review: This TV was easily the most expensive thing I've ever bought on Amazon. It was well worth it though. Below, I'm going to cover all aspects of the TV that you might be curious about. One thing I want to point out before I get started, however: I'm not a technology expert, so I'll be giving you an opinion that comes from (hopefully) your typical everyday TV buyer. Ready? Ok, here we go!

PURCHASE
Amazon.com made it extremely easy to purchase this TV. I won't dwell on this aspect too much because I know that most readers have probably already purchased something from Amazon before, but I want to say that it's great being able to buy something without a commission-hungry salesperson following your every footstep.

DELIVERY
Amazon shipped the TV to us via EagleUSA. Now, I've never heard of EagleUSA, but they did a great job in getting the TV to us safely. I was able to track the TV's progress via the web, and so I knew when it was going to arrive. But EagleUSA took it one step further: they actually called and scheduled a time to deliver the TV. This eliminated the need for me to miss more work than necessary, and so was greatly appreciated. One interesting story: When the delivery person arrived, he saw we lived at the top of a long flight of stairs. So he asked me to help him carry it up! That's the first time I've ever had to do that, but it was understandable. The TV weighs 104 pounds in the box (95 pounds without), so he would not have been able to get it up the stairs himself.

UNPACKING
The TV was difficult to get out of the box, mainly because we didn't want to damage the box in case the TV had to be returned. And like I mentioned before, it is extremely heavy! My wife and I lifted it up and put it on our coffee table, but it definitely took both of us. The remote, 2 batteries, and instruction manual were all packaged nicely and in perfect condition.

SETUP
This was the easy part. In our case, we only had to do three things. First we plugged the component video cable and audio cables from our DVD player into the TV, and then we plugged the TV into the wall. The plugs for the different video and audio options are color-coded and well-labeled, so even if you have more connections than we did, you shouldn't have any problem. One thing to be aware of: the flat screen makes the TV heavy in the front, so be prepared for this and don't plan on having the front of the TV hang out over furniture.

INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Not much to say here. We found the instructions clear, and the pictures helpful. For any features we couldn't figure out on our own, the manual provided clear instructions as to what to do.

PICTURE
Wow! I'll say it again -- Wow! Now granted, we watched movies using the DVD player (via component video), so the picture was about as good as a home theater setup can be, but still, it blew us away. I know a lot of people prefer Sony to Toshiba, but I think they both produce an excellent picture. And with the flat screen, you don't get the annoying glare if you're sitting at an angle to the TV. We didn't have to adjust the picture, but the menu is easy to walk through if you want to change tint, contrast, etc. And there are also 3 presets that simulate movie conditions, sports conditions, etc. Select one of these, and the settings are adjusted automatically. In short, if you want a better, clearer picture, go look out your window.

AUDIO
We don't have a fancy audio setup, so we opted to use the TV's built in speakers and built in surround sound. And believe me, this works for us just fine. When the THX logo came up for a movie we were watching, the sound seemed to fill our entire room. It doesn't completely simulate surround sound (kind of hard to duplicate speakers behind your head), but it sounds real and clear enough to work as a great substitute. The only thing I will mention is that I initially heard a very high frequency buzz. Then I realized that I was waaay too close to the TV and that all TVs have some kind of buzz. I think I was being critical of the sound that first night because I was testing everything about the TV I could. Now I don't even hear the buzz.

REMOTE
I've always liked Toshiba remotes, and with this TV, that hasn't changed. They still design their remotes intelligently. The volume and channel forward/backward is in a circle, so your hands find it easily in the dark. Of course, the remote glows in the dark, so that probably wouldn't be a problem anyway. There is a favorite channels button, as well as a button to return to the station you were previously viewing. The remote is a universal remote, but it doesn't work with our DVD player yet because our DVD player is brand new. Hopefully I will be able to find a code for it in the future and program it in.

INTANGIBLES
One feature I like about this television is that you can add labels to 30 of the channels. So instead of seeing channel 5, 6, 7, etc, you can see ABC, NBC, FOX, etc. But the really cool feature is the ability to label the video sources. So instead of switching between video 1, video 2, video 3, you can switch between DVD, VCR, and CABLE. This is a small thing, but it's a nice touch.

SUMMARY
We're extremely pleased with our purchase and recommend this TV to anyone who wants a high quality TV at an affordable price. If you're looking to buy a TV now, this is the one to get!

Review: Well like we need another five star review!
I am not much of a TV watcher but just use the TV for DVD movies and after reading all the other reviews, got it.
Wow. You can sit there just admiring the color and the detail of the picture. If I were looking for a TV, I would not continue my search.
This coming from a research-everything-before-you-buy kinda guy.
