Description:

Flat televisions offer the dual benefits of wide viewing angles and clear, distortion-free images, and this Sharp 20-inch model delivers on both counts. The TV includes a contrast enhancer, which further defines the onscreen picture, along with a color temperature control option that adjusts the screen's white balance toward either blue (cool) or red (warm) depending on such variables as the light sources in the room. The features are packaged inside Sharp's X-Flat cabinet design that's engineered to complement a room's aesthetics, as well as the visuals of other components in a home theater and stereo system.

Viewers with a multilingual background can make use of the trilingual onscreen menu, which translates in English, Spanish, and French for the watcher's benefit. The TV also offers auto channel programming, closed captioning, a sleep timer, and an energy saver function that reduces power consumption. Parents will appreciate the V-chip and viewing timer, both of which help manage their children's viewing habits. The V-chip blocks mature or questionable programming based on its predetermined ratings, while the viewing timer invites parents to decide how much TV their kids should watch each day (in 30-minute intervals).

As with most modern TVs, the 20-F640 equips viewers with several flexible audio options. In addition to playing MTS stereo broadcasts through its 5-watt speaker system (2.5 watts x 2), the TV also includes a variable audio output for users who want to connect the TV to a separate stereo system. When users want to use the distinct stereo, they merely turn off the TV's speakers in the audio menu and the TV remote controls the volume of the stereo speakers. The TV also broadcasts secondary audio programming when available. Video sources such as DVD players or satellite dishes connect to the TV through the component video input, which ensures a superior quality picture. The model also includes front and rear AV inputs that hook up to video game consoles, VCRs, camcorders, and more.
