Summary: The Beginning Of Something Great
Review: Ah, yes, it's finally here! The Simpsons has made it's way to DVD and it was well worth the wait. Presented here are all 13 episodes of the notorious first season of The Simpsons, the greatest animated television program of all time. The first season is, in my opinion, classic, and, although it lacks the sharp with and fast paced nature that would become required in an episode, and though it has some cruddy animation and uneven voices, the first season is a masterpiece. Simpsons fans will of course be delighted to go back and revisit the begginning, where everything got charged up, and the show went from a series of two minute shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, to a full half hour prime time TV series. There are several classics packed into this season, and I truly love every single episode. Heres reviews of the episodes (I hope Amazon doesn't cut this out). Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire (Episode #1) Well, it all starts here, the first episode ever, actually a Christmas special that debuted on December 17, 1989. This episode features Homer in sorro when he doesn't get his bonus and all the saved money goes to getting Bart's tatoo removed. Homer becomes a Santa at the mall, that is until Bart discovers this. This episode is classic, easily establishing that this family can support a show, and the animation is a giant leap over the shorts. Plus, there are lot of fast jokes anfd gags flying around. 10/10 Bart The Genuis (Episode #2) This was kind of th first episode since the other one was a special, but in any case, this episode finds Bart cheating on his intelligence test and getting sent into a super advanced school. Pretty funny, but gets old much quicker that the others, and the animation is a step down from the previous episode. 6/10 Homer's Odyssey (Episode #3) Hilarious episode where Homer loses his job, attempts to kill himself, but then decides to work at increasing safetin Sprinfield, eventually having to go confront his old boss, Mr. Burns. 10/10 There's No Disgrace Like Home (Episode #4) Very funny, but a little annoying, episode, where Homer and the whole family decide to go get therapy so they can become a nice, normal family, but they get more than they bargained for. 7/10 Bart The General (Episode #5) This is a classic episode, but I've seen it so many times before it's a little boring. However, that doesn't make it bad. The episode focuses on Bart fighting back on bully Nelson, along with the help of a whole group of friends. 8/10 Moaning Lisa (Episode #6) This episode is a little to mushy for me, but the sub-plot about Homer and Bart competing on a boxing video game is very funny. The basic plot is about Lisa, who is sad for various reasons. 7/10 The Call Of The Simpsons (Episode #7) Now here's a masterpiece. This episode episode very closely resembles what we would see in later season from the second season forward. There's tons of jokes going by at a tremendously fast pace, and there's a ton of blink and you'll miss 'em jokes. Plot: Homer buys a worthless RV to show off to Flanders, but he only succeeds in getting the family lost in the woods, where Maggie is taken care of by bairs, and he gets mistaken as Bigfoot. 10/10 The Telltale Head (Episode #8) This episode is a personal fav of mine. Bart cuts off the head of the statue of town founder Jebediah Springfield in order to be accepted into the bad kids group. This episode is funny, period. 9/10 Life On The Fast Lane (Episode #9) Ah, the classics just keep rolling out. Marge starts bolling, and her instrusctor, Jaque, is trying to seduce her. Now she's left between the choice of her stupid but sweet husband, or her suave and sophisticated teacher. 8/10 Homer's Night Out (Episode #10) This one involves Bart taking a snapshot of Homer while he dances with a near naked dancer. Marge is shocked, and Hmer is in trouble. This episode has enormous re-watch value, and is very funny. 10/10 The Crepes Of Wrath (Episode #11) This is a mildly funny episode in which Bart gets sent to France in a foreign exchange program, but is to live for three months with two evil wine makers and a nasty vineyard. 8/10 Krusty Gets Busted (Episode #12) In this acclaimed episode, Bart goes for the first time against Sideshow Bob, thrying to prove that Krusty did not rob the QuickieMart which is what is believed. Excellent. 10/10 Some Enchanted Evening (Episode #13) Even though it appears to be Episode 13, this is actually Episode 1, but the animation was so bad that this one was moved into the end of the season, the season finale, actually. Homer takes Marge out for a romantic evening after hearing that she's gonna leave him. The kids are also left with a psychotic babysitter to fend off. This episode returns to the cruddier animation of the first few, and that got on my nerver a tad (Homer keeps changing shape!), and this episode is only minorly enjoyable after you've seen it once. 6/10 Anyway, those are the epsiodes, now onto the DVD. The quality of these episodes is generally excellent, with only a minor speckle or grain to disrupt enjoyment. All these reviews here complaing and saying the quality is that of video, all I can say is you are way to picky. The sound is either 2.0 or 5.1 surround sound, which is very good, especially when listened to in actual surround souund. Every single episode has comentary by Matt Groening and other people, and they are quite entertaining, packing tons of information and laughs. There's also a short documentary called "The Simpsons-America's First Family" and one Tracey Ullman short. There are scripts for four episodes and a diffrent version of Some Enchanted Evening. The navigation of the episodes is basic, but who cares what the menus are like. I know I don't. Well, that's it. This set is worth having. There's nice features, and great episodes, and it is all packaged up very nicely. Highley recommended.

Summary: Not the best, but funny.
Review: The Simpsons first season was far from the best, but it was still a funny show. The audio commentary is a great addition, you'll pick up a good deal about the history of the show - how the characters were formed, how the show is made, who the behind-the-scenes people are. Unfortunately, you cannot really watch the episodes themselves with the commentary on, the sound of the show is nearly impossible to hear or concentrate on. I recommend watching the episode, then restarting it with the commentary (you reach the commentary as though it was a form of subtitle). It's worth doing, and at 22 minutes, each show run through twice is still only 45 minutes and very enjoyable.

Summary: Good DVD, boring Season
Review: We have all seen the season 1 reruns so many times it's not funny. The first season is a pretty boring one as well. If you are a simpsons fan, you need this just to have in your collection. If not, just skip right over to season 2. As whole, its a well put together DVD with lots of good special features. And 4 DVDs for under 30 bucks is a good deal.

Summary: Season one... it's a classic now...
Review: Yes, the animation is far from perfect, and the voices and character renderings are different then in the following seasons, but this is where it all began. The set is visually beautiful, and all the episodes contain audio commentaries by the show creators. I took a star down because the rest of the bonus materials are slim, but all around, it's a set. For a price as low as that, you really can't lose. It's a must!

Review: Sure the animation is crude by today's standard but just think ...Simpsons is in it's 14th season! See how it all started with this set. You can't go wrong. See how the original characters developed into what they are today.

Summary: The beginnings of a classic !
Review: Although the first year is the probably the weakest link in the entire run of this great show, it is still worth having. Much like chocolate sprinkles on a cake that's not quite perfect (mmmmmm - chololate sprinkles !!), it's still a delight.
This may not be your DVD player's most-played disc, but it's still historical, and does offer it's share of humor and poignancy, as well as a social commentary stab or two, along the way.
Not as great as it would become, it's still highly recommended.

Review: This would be an absolutely great collection if it hadn't been for two things. First of all, they charge way too much for this collection. If they had stuck it all on one dvd, which they easily could have, and just sold it for less, then this would be a great deal. But because they didn't put it all on one disc, they caused a huge price for only about seven episodes. This brings us to my second problem. Did the first season really have just about 7 - 8 episodes. That would have been a pretty short season. All in all, this collection is an alright deal if you are either a. A DIE-HARD Fan b. An avid Simpsons collector or c. Have a lot of money to spend on dvds
