Summary: It's colder in Winnipeg than in Cicely!
Review: Disregard the price complaints of previous customers! This is an extremely intelligent and witty series definitely worth owning!

Summary: Not good enough
Review: Do not buy a product that isn't what it claims to be.
This is NOT the second season of NE.
It is an altered version at best.
Markets are driven by demand. Don't buy this and demand a the actual televised versions.

Review: Five Stars for NORTHERN EXPOSURE - It's a must in my DVD collection. However, only three stars for how the DVD was
put together and the missing music. What were they thinking ~ that we wouldn't notice?

Summary: What happened to the music?
Review: I am overjoyed that NX is finally available on DVD. However, I have to say that I have been somewhat disappointed with the end product. Needing to flip the disc over for additional episodes seems like an older technology. I don't know any DVDs now that require you to do that. Most disappointedly though, is the fact that a lot of the music has been changed from the original version. I understood that the reason the NX DVD was so expensive was that they needed to pay copyright to keep all original music. If the music is indeed different, why are they still so expensive?

Obviously, I'll take whatever I can get. This is one of the best television shows ever produced. Just have to say that I have been disappointed.

Summary: SEASON 2 IS NOT MISSING IMPORTANT MUSIC!!!
Review: I WAS OUTRAGED TO READ SOME OF THE REVIEWS ON THIS SITE MENTIONING THE DREADFULL OMISSION OF IMPORTANT MUSIC IN THIS SERIES. I WAS WORRIED THAT I HAD WASTED MY MONEY BUYING SEASON TWO AS A RESULT. BUT ALAS, I WATCHED MY DVDs AND WAS DELIGHTED TO DISCOVER THAT THERE WAS NO IMPORTANT MUSIC ON THE SOUNDTRACK MISSING!!!!! WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE SMOKING??!!!! "AT LAST" "GO INSANE" "YOU DO SOMETHING TO ME" WERE NOT IN FACT MISSING. THIS WAS THE MUSIC I WAS WORRIED ABOUT MISSING. IT IS NOT MISSING. THE EPISODES ARE STILL WONDERFUL AND LACK NOTHING THAT WOULD HAVE AUGMENTED THEM OTHERWISE (I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT MOST OF THE STUFF IN HOLLINGS BAR... I FELT IT MADE NO DISCERNABLE DIFFERENCE) SO I SAY BUY THE DVD... IT IS A GREAT BUY!!!!

Summary: Write Universal now!
Review: If you're interested in telling Universal how you feel about their mishandling of the music in the second season of Northern Exposure, you can contact them via email. [...]

Music was an integral part of the effect of this show, and omission of even what some may consider simply "background music" has an impact on the mood of specific scenes. Those who charge that viewers are being too sensitive about this issue are missing the point: Northern Exposure's success lies in its sensitivity to nuance and detail. Hard to believe the producers of the original show didn't put up a fuss about this. Looks like it's up to the fans.

Summary: Sad
Review: Northern Exposure is perhaps my favorite television show. If someone had told me years ago that I would someday refuse to buy this on DVD, I would have thought they were crazy. But I would have to be crazy to buy it.

A great part of Northern Exposure's charm was its music. The people who made the series obviously gave a lot of thought to finding just the right music to support, or to make, a scene. I don't think anyone before had given so much thought to the music heard on a television show. It is sad that the people who put out this DVD did not care enough to keep the music intact.

I will never, ever, buy this set until the music is restored. And I won't buy any of the future sets unless they contain the origina music. I gather that a lot of people agree with me. Shame on the people who put out this DVD set. They need to go back and make this right. And they need to ensure that future sets contain all of the original music.

Summary: Content is classic, but altered. Discs not user-friendly.
Review: OVERALL:
Disappointing that there is no "net" improvement over the 1st Season release. It is frustrating to navigate the discs. ONLY 7 EPISODES!?!? The episodes are still classic and enjoyable if you are NOT a die-hard NX fan.

The flaws are:
1. The organization of the menus and navigation of the content is not intuitive which leads to frustration.
2. The discs are two-sided and poorly labeled, with no labelling of episodes to indicate which side of which disc to insert for play. Finding the right "side" to play a specific episode is basicly trial-and-error.
3. The musical soundtrack has been altered from the original. For die-hard NX music fans this is a CRUSHING disappointment, I would say it borders on grounds for a class-action lawsuit for something like false advertising.

One solitary improvement is:
1. A summary of the story-line precedes each episode.

Our feeling: After buying the 1st Season, we assumed the 2nd Season DVD would be an improvement. Overall, we were wrong and feel basicly cheated at the price. We will not buy the 3rd season until we read reviews here. We expect the reviews to be poor. If so we'll pick up a used copy on the cheap.

Summary: I love the show! . . . but not this DVD . . .
Review: This is the first Amazon review I've felt moved to 'pen' - my reason for doing so: I was a big fan of NX when it first aired and I continue to love what was aired . . . I should thank Universal and all who finally brought the First Season to us! Season One was a solid DVD - all NX and no fuss.

But the Second Season of NX on DVD isn't the second season that was aired. You know the cry by now: The music is missing - and not a little of music, not some of the music - a lot of the music is missing! If you had a favorite scene with a special little tune playing in the background - it's probably not there anymore. Whole scenes are ripped of their original emotion and the music you once loved has been replaced. And what does that matter?

Here's a little experiment to try at home: grab your favorite movie, pick a favorite scene - something you know all the lines to, an exciting scene, an emotional scene - turn the volume low on the TV - and then grab any random CD (don't look at what you picked!) and put it in your stereo - and play the two at the same time.

This is what NX-Season Two is like - it's like viewing one thing while listening to another. (And can someone explain why the Spanish language track has all the music but the English track doesn't?!) Music carries emotion, story, insight - a lot of the music on this DVD carries . . . what?? Whatever 'it' is it's empty and hollow.

You know the old expression: if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck - it's a duck! This DVD looks like NX but doesn't sound like NX. This DVD isn't the Complete Second Season of NX. It's not the Northern Exposure I came to know and love.

I know people will buy this DVD for the same reasons I did - for the love of a great program! But save your money - this isn't the show you loved. It's half the show you once knew. Enjoy the first season of NX on DVD. Take a pass on the Second Season of NX.

Summary: Season 3 Release
Review: Universal has announced the release of season 3 - May 10th. And it's all 23 episodes! This show was one of the all time best ever (have to include Frank's Place and Sports Night in there, too). Season 3 will be the same price as seasons 1 and 2, so hopefully everyone can relax.
