Summary: Comedy and more
Review: After a spate of television shows in the 1980's that portrayed women as bimbos, ..., or perpetual second bananas, along came the groundbreaking comedy, "Designing Women". This memorable series featured four intelligent, successful women who happened to be attractive and independent as well.The cast was lead by Dixie Carter who portrayed Julia Sugarbaker, the articulate, formidable owner of a thriving interior design business. Her partner and sister, Suzanne Sugarbaker, delectably played by Delta Burke, was a saucy, endearingly self-centered former beauty queen with a knack for speaking exactly as she thought. Annie Potts was the witty, wisecracking designer Mary Jo. Rounding out the cast was Jean Smart who portrayed the kind-hearted and slightly naive office manager, Charlene. Unlike so many cardboard female characters on television at the time, the women of "Designing Women" were full-blooded and three dimensional. They were risk-takers and role models. How refreshing and commendable it was for Linda Bloodworth-Thomason to bring women like these to life in a weekly television series. And what a superlative cast she assembled in Carter, Burke, Potts, and Smart. "Designing Women" paved the way for a more realistic representation of women on television. It dealt with issues that are important to women in their day-to-day lives. And it was elegant comedy rarely seen on television.

Review: All the episodes should be on DVD. This was just enough to get us started! This was an outstanding show, far better than many with complete seasons currently on the market. Please get this classic on disc!

Summary: RELEASE ALL EDPISODES--IT IS A MUST!!!
Review: As a dedicated and loyal fan of "Designing Women", I, too, think that the whole series should be release by seasons...while I think there were far funnier episodes than the ones chosen, I love them as well. My favorites include the trip with Suzanne and Anthony to St. Louis, the one where they all go to Design Expo in New Orleans, and my all time favorite episode when Julia gets jury duty. I have watched the show everyday for years on Lifetime and still laugh out loud at some of the best interaction between any group of actors. I love "Designing Women".

Review: Designing Women is one of the greatest series ever. I'm so happy that it's finally out on DVD. I would buy all of the seasons if they were ever released.

Summary: Far from the best episodes of a great show
Review: Designing Women was an excellent, intelligent comedy, which had many, many great episodes. The ones selected for this disk, although very good, are not among the best. For example, none of the crazy closeness between the Suzanne and Anthony characters is shown (such as the episode when they are forced to share a hotel room in a blizzard or the episode when she coaches him on running for prom king). Also the technical quality of the disk is that of a VHS tape and not of a DVD. The resolution is mediocre at best. Buy this disk because even the mediocre episodes selected are a lot of fun to watch.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: First off let me say that I love Designing Women and I was really happy when they released the DVD. However, I wanted to be able to see the really funny shows, like the one when Julia gets her head stuck in the bannister or the one where Charlene gives birth to Olivia. This had episodes that were memorable but unfunny. These episodes dealt with serious situations that were socially conscious, but could you please include something that is going to make me laugh after I feel depressed? Call me shallow, but I would rather laugh than cry at a show that is supposed to be funny. I would prefer the whole season coming out on seperate sets than a few shows at once.

Summary: Four Southern Belles Sitting on a Veranda
Review: From 1986 to 1993, Desiging Women aired weekly and caught the attention of millions of viewers. Now the series can be seen on Lifetime. But what better than to own a piece of one of televisions' funniest comedies!?! The original cast of Designing Women were one of televisions best combinations of their time. To be the first release for Designing Women...This one has to be a smart one. It is a very clever way to show everyone who wants a little taste of the series just what Designing Women is all about without paying the big bucks for a complete season. This Show, by far, has touched on many topics that have shown a different look at the silly and the sad times of our lives. From Mary Jo's desire to get bigger breasts...to dealing a friend who is H.I.V. positive...to dealing with the coping of weigh gain, the girls of Sugar Bakers' have been through it all. Although "all" of my favorites aren't included on this DVD (simply because it would be hard to put a low enough price on a "top 25" dvd) this DVD is one that fans of Desiging Women will cherish. I recommend to anyone who is just wanting a good laugh and to set back and see just how funny life can be...GET THIS DVD!!!

Summary: 5-Star Content, 1-star Execution
Review: Hooray for something, ANYTHING, from this great show on DVD. It was about time! There's just one little problem: the digital compression on these episodes is terrible!!! Pixelation galore...everywhere! (AND the "Pilot" episode looks like a dupe of a kinescope.) Poor picture quality on the remaining four episodes is also noticeable (just hit the "Pause" button at any point and you'll easily see what I mean). Why couldn't they take the space they wasted by including trailers for "Sleepless in Seattle" and "A League of Their Own" and devote it to the episodes themselves? I thought DVD was supposed to meet or exceed broadcast quality--"Designing Women" looks MUCH better on Lifetime than it does on this disk. Honestly, I'm as anxious as anyone else to have every season on DVD, but if this is an example of what they'll all look like, I will NOT bother buying them. Please Columbia/TriStar/Sony, hire someone who CARES about this show to master future transfers, if any. Thank you in advance!
