Summary: Happy Enough To Fling A Piano
Review: It has been a long time coming but the first season is finally here in DVD. My VHS tapes are falling apart, they couldn't have come at a better time. I agree that the cost is rather excessive...but...I don't want to wait another 9 or 10 years till they decide to put these excellent episodes on DVD format. I will probably be more than willing to shell out the cash to get these DVDs as the are released. In my 30+ years of television viewing this has to be one of the best programs ever to grace the small screen. Hopefully they will release the whole cosmic enchilada and I won't be short a season when I'm done collecting. Time has done justice to this show. It seems to appeal to me more as the years go by. It is a shame it only lasted a few years. Big things come in small packages I guess. As Marilyn would say, "Yes!"

Summary: Welcome to Cicely
Review: Certainly not the best deal in television series boxed sets, but this collection of the first 8 episodes of Northern Exposure is long overdue. This was one of the most original shows on television but it is Joshua Brand and John Falsey who should be given top billing. They were the creators of this marvelous series, which spanned between 1990 and 1995. The thought provoking stories, razor sharp humor and wonderful backdrop (Washington not Alaska) set Northern Exposure apart from anything being produced at the time. Even still it had a hard time gaining ground, not enjoying a full season until its third year. The characters are memorable, ranging from Dr. Fleischman's quirky secretary Marilyn Whirlwind (who has only fleeting appearances in the first season) to the former astronaut Maurice J. Minnifield who essentially bankrolled Cicely on the fortune he amassed after his days in NASA. The stage is beautifully set in these two discs, but it would seem to me that they could have included the second season as well, making it more worth its price. ...

Summary: NX Fans aren't fools!!
Review: I have been avidly waiting for NX to be released on DVD and this is what we get!! $60 for 8 messly episodes! What is Universal playing at here? with every bad sitcom under the sun being released on DVD they take in excess of 10 years to make this show available en masse to its fans and now they are trying to bend us over and screw us royaly. Who knows how much they are going to charge for Season 3 which actually contains 22 episodes. All of us NX fans need to band together and protest loudly and proudly to Universal that the market for this show is out there but we aint a bunch of punks!!

Summary: FINALLY
Review: This is one of my favorite shows! I miss it very much, I never got to buy the VHS, but now it is on DVD at last (well in may it is anyhow :) The characters are all crazy, the setting is so peaceful, and begs to be disturbed by the characters.

I can't wait to hear Chris Stevens muse over whatever he muses over in stereo surround on my dvd :)

Summary: RIP OFF - Only 8 Episodes
Review: The "COMPLETE" First Season is only 8 Episodes.
This is a 2 disc set for a list price of [$$$].
To give you an example of what TV Shows on DVD currently cost from other studios, you can buy "Gilmour Girls- Season 1" for the same amount and that is 6 discs, 21 epsidodes, deleted scenes, etc.
This has got to be the MOST EXPENSIVE TV DVD EVER per episode.
Yet another Universal RIP OFF!!

Summary: BUYERS BEWARE!!! $59.98 List price for 8 episodes!
Review: Don't be fooled by the "Season 1" title. This release is a 2 disc set with only 8 episodes.
This is astronomical compared to other TV shows on DVD.
Universal are gouging fans for every penny they can get. And don't let them tell you the music clearance costs are the reason.
Freaks and Geeks, a similarly brilliant show with enormous music costs is currently available for pre-order at $69.98 for a 6 disc set with all 18 episodes, all the original music, 29 commentary tracks, over 60 deleted scenes, and loads more.
I am a huge fan of Northern Exposure and have been eagerly awaiting its release on DVD but this price is a joke. Seasons 1 & 2 were officially only 8 episodes so we can expect the $59.98 list price for these. If you buy into this then don't complain when Season 3, which had 22 episodes has a list price of $179.98, or is broken down into 2 disc "Volumes" so they can really screw the customer.
Don't help the major studios justify charging comsumers ridiculous prices. Complain to Universal and don't buy it until they lower the price.
Whoever at Universal making these decisions should be fired! It's a DISGRACE.

Summary: Couldn't sleep
Review: When Northern Exposure first came out I didn't give it a chance. I saw the moose and promtply turned off the TV. At other times I would turn it on in the middle of an episode and didn't know what was going on and, once again, turned off the TV.
The show was eventually cancelled thanks to people like me but I couldn't have cared less. Then one night at around 2am I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep so I turned on the TV and there was a rerun of NE and it just so happens it was the first episode. The next night I woke up and watched the second episode. Eventually I would set my alarm clock for 1:59 am just so I could watch the show and luckily for me the shows were aired in sequential order.
The interesting thing about NE is I don't necessarily like the characters in it. Joel is an annoying "atheist". Maggie is a stubborn shrew. Chris is a glorified hippy. Maurice is a power hungry maniac. But what makes the show great is that there is a kind of expressiveness about the characters that we wish we saw in every day life. We wish that people were more reflective and intelligent. We wish that there was this sense of connectiveness to the universe even in moments of grat conflict. Even more importantly the town seems to be immune from the pressures of the outside world and stays true to it's form while at the same time being able to interact with the corruption outside. Perhaps this call for the old time village state of mind in ourselves is what makes us like this show so much.
Funny because I used to hate the moose and now it warms my heart every time I see a moose or hear that funny Northern Exposure theme.

Summary: Best TV Show of All Time
Review: Masterfully written, witty, observant, and heart warming, Northern Exposure is not only enjoyable to watch, but has affected me on a deeper level. Through its various characters, each with their own unique traits, quirks and perspectives on life, it has helped me deal with the cold, stark reality of our existence.

Joel, the neurotic New York jewish doctor, whose acerbic wit and cynical quips keep me loving and pitying him at the same time. "And what does glued on macaroni represent, man's inhumanity to man?"

Maurice, the capitalist racontuer, Lord of the manor, strong yet ready to crumble at the same time. His quiet desperation and lonliness echo the emptiness that we all feel due to our consumer driven, materialistic society. All the trapping of his riches and accomplishments cannot hide his aching heart.

Chris, the irrepresable dime-store philosopher, whose obervances of the human plight help to give us some perspective that we are not alone in our questioning of suffering. Long winded, but ultimately a fellow searcher who yearns to find meaning in this thing we call life.

Walt, the former Merrill Lynch broker, who has chucked the wheeling and dealing of Wall Street for life in the outback as a trapper. His addiction to the light visor episode is priceless.

Adam, the shadowy ex-CIA operative gourmet, with his holey blue beanie and shoeless feet, quick with a crack or a put-down, but showing up to save Maurice's feast at the last minute. His grudging respect of Mauric'e code and Joel's professionalism give his character a depth that could have easily been missed if the show's writers had decided to use him strictly as comic relief.

The list goes on and on, Maggie, Marilyn, Ed, Holling & Shelley, Ruth-Ann, Officer Semanski....I love you all. I think everone who loves this show understands what I'm trying to say here. This show has trancended television to become something more. Art? Philosophy? I won't try to categorize it, but it has been an important influence in my life, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Any time I'm feeling down, I know that my friends in Cicely, Alaska share my pain and can help me through.

Summary: Some old friends finally return!
Review: I have every episode of this fantastic show on VHS, some of them twice. They stay in my bedroom VHS player, and have for the past 2 or 3 years. I catch an episode or two EVERY night. Needless to say, they are starting to show their age. Thank goodness for DVD! If I had 3 wishes, one of them would be for Cicily to be a real town, with these people, and me living right there amongst 'em! I'd like to give Joel a little competition for Mary Margaret! I feel like I know all of these people. I've been asked many times, which of these characters could this show do without. I would have to say, none of them! They ALL made this one of the best shows that's ever been on television.
