Summary: It's About Time, But...
Review: It was a terrible shame that there was no tape of any concert from the Monkees' 20 Anniversary tour. Then there was nothing from their 30th Anniversary tour. Finally, we have something from their 35th Anniversay tour. Unfortunately, it was one of Peter Tork's last concerts as a Monkee. Still more unfortunate, many of their songs were deleted from the DVD. I was at their concert in NY and it was between an hour and a half and two hours long. There were nearly 30 songs performed at the concert on the DVD whereas only 18 made it onto the DVD. With some songs deleted and all of the between-songs banter missing, this is not even an hour long. Very disappointing. There is no reason why the entire concert could not be included. The little bit of interviews was interesting but very short. The karaoke was nuts. However, it was still good to have something to remember their concerts by.

Summary: Great Show!
Review: It was something like this that we were all expecting for years about the Monkees! A live show professionally recorded to enlighten all fans. The show is really great, with all the classic songs and many more very well chosen and performed. They are still in shape on stage and very funny yet.We can see that the show was carefully prepared and the result is fantastic.Maybe the DVD could offer more like longer interviews or different angles, but the show itself pays it off.Greatest moment? Many, but I enjoyed "Goin'Down" a lot for its coreography. If you like the Monkees, don't miss it!

Review: Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones have no "E" in their first names.

Summary: Nice Tour Memento But Colored By Backstory
Review: Monkees fans will make a beeline for this DVD since it's one of their few (if not the only) legit concert videos. Watching it will bring back memories of past Monkees show for many viewers. Filmed August 31, 2001 at the Sun Theatre in Anaheim, California, many fans know that this show has an interesting backstory.

This tour date was originally scheduled for August 24th but was cancelled when Micky Dolenz came down with laryngitis. After being rescheduled for August 31, the show was filmed and Peter Tork was let go from the group two days later. Many speculated that Peter would've been dropped earlier if it hadn't been for the contract to have this concert filmed. It will be hard for many Monkee fans not to think of this story as they watch this DVD.

Backstory aside, the concert was nicely filmed and has good picture quality. The camera focuses on everyone from the Monkees to the back up band, as well as the three annoying male backup dancers/musicians.

All of the standard Monkees hits are featured, although this DVD appears to not include every song that was recorded that night (use the zoom button on your DVD remote and you can see a playlist on Peter's keyboard that includes songs such as "No Time" that aren't on the DVD). The overal sound quality of the songs is excellent.

There is some bonus interview footage with all three Monkees but the quotes they give have all been heard by fans in other interviews through the years. There are also two songs that have been turned into Karaoke songs. The video footage for these songs is the same as if you were watching the concert with the sound on. The booklet doesn't offer much except for track listings and three pictures.

In a nutshell, this is a nicely-done DVD. It will be a treat for Monkee fans and will make for something fun to watch while waiting for the entire Monkees TV series to be released on DVD.

Summary: Best moments were left out
Review: The footage on this DVD is excellent, but unfortunately not aimed toward the hard-core Monkee fan. I think the producers missed the point. The Monkees made this tour mostly about those fans who have been with them for the long haul. They played the songs we'd all been dying to hear like "Shades Of Gray". The DVD only includes the group's mainstream songs which I thought was a big mistake. Also, there was almost none of the banter that goes on between the guys between songs. Those are the things we really wanted to see. I'm happy to have this DVD to jog my memory of the three times I saw this tour, but I'm dissapointed in the production overall.

Summary: There's Good News and then There's Bad News
Review: The good news is that this dvd was released and is available for purchase here at amazon.com. And it's a great show, don't get me wrong. I think the 2001-2002 tour had some of the Monkees best shows in the last 10 years. The bad news is that they left out the real treasures.... Anyone who went to any of the live shows will remember-- Sandy and Dave as Archie and Edith Bunker; Davy's Oliver Medley; the guys singing a medley of songs by their favorite songwriter: MIKE NESMITH; all the crazy Monkee antics between songs; and my personal favorite, Micky's version of Since I fell for You, complete with the story about his PMS (Pre-Monkee Singing.) It's too bad that they left the best stuff out, it would have been almost as good as going in person.

Summary: 1960s Monkees still strong in 2002
Review: The Monkees are no strangers to the touring circuit. Ever since their extremely successful 20th anniversary reunion tour rolled through American arenas and stadiums in 1986 and 1987, Micky Dolenz, David Jones and Peter Tork have also performed major world tours in 1989, 1996, 1997 and finally, in 2001, which is documented on this--the first professionally released video (DVD) recording of a Monkees concert.

This performance from August 2001 is polished, rocking and overall a pleasure to view. It is amazing watching these songs be performed and realizing how well they have held up after all these years. Don't believe me? Listen to the band belt out "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Steppin' Stone." The Monkees are truely a pop classic.

This DVD is also an important Monkees historical piece as it documents the very last performance to date that Peter Tork gave with the Monkees, as he was abruptly dismissed from the band after this very concert due to internal conflicts with Dolenz and Jones over the future of the Monkees.

The bonus interviews and features are a nice addition, but even more added bonuses would have been welcomed. It is ashame that the 1986 and 1987 tours were never documented like this, not to mention the 1997 shows with fellow Monkee Michael Nesmith that took place in Europe. However, "Live Summer Tour" more than does the job. Stay tuned for the live compact disc of this show to be released in the future, with different songs than what is found on this DVD.

Summary: Great, but Could be better
Review: This DVD is great, but edited! Half of the songs were left out. Because of that, King Biscuit is going to offer an EXTENDED AND UNCUT VERSION of this concert that include, well, everything!

This DVD, however, is wonderful for those not so die hard fans. Davy, Micky, and Peter are right on the mark with the songs and it's great to sing to.
