Summary: Wait a second. These Three Stooges comedies have plots!
Review: The three Columbia shorts collected on "Nutty But Nice" are pretty funny, but what is surprising is that on one Three Stooges videotape you would find that all three stories have a plot that pretty much exists from start to finish. There are a whole lot of Three Stooges comedies where the end has nothing to do with the finish, but that is not the case here:

"The Sitter-Downers" is a 1937 comedy that find the Stooges in love, with three sisters of course, but their father rejects their marriage proposals so the boys stage a strike. To our surprise, it works and the boys decide who gets which girl by drawing names out of a hat (Curly gets "Stetson"). The payoff for this comedy is when the trio of happy couples is given a free house to live in: the catch is that it comes in a kit and the Stooges need to assemble it. Which they do and it looks pretty good--until the final shot.

"Nutty but Nice" comes from 1940 and starts off with the Stooges operating a restaurant but the main part of this is their efforts to cheer up a little girl who is sad because her father disappeared from the bank with $300,000 worth of bonds. But even with the Stooges dressed up as little girls doing their lollipop routine, they cannot get her to crack a smile. So they decide to track down the missing dad. This is actually a happy ending to this one and, in an even bigger surprise, we actually get back to the restaurant where the whole thing started.

"Slippery Silks" is a 1936 comedy where the Stooges start off as antique restorers. That might be the strangest job they have had, but of course they end up destroying a rare Chinese cabinet. So the next thing the boys are doing is making dresses at Madame de France's gown shop. The antique restoration (or destruction) from the first reel is combined with the dress making from the second reel as the Stooges design clothes that look like furniture (complete with the drawers).

I am still amazed at the sense of narrative completeness demonstrated all three of these comedies. Two of the three had the story and screenplay done by Ewart Adamson, but "Nutty but Nice" was written by Clyde Bruckman and Felix Adler. Sorry, but that is the best explanation I can come up for this strange occurrence.

Summary: Excellent choice of films.
Review: This DVD has six excellent shorts. NUTTY BUT NICE, HIGHER THAN A KITE, FALSE ALARMS, HOI POLLOI, HALF-WITS HOLIDAY, and A DUCKING THEY DID GO. The only one I don't like very much is NUTTY BUT NICE. But the other five are zany, fast-paced, and hilarious. I think the best one is A DUCKING THEY DID GO. The Stooges join a bogus duck club which hunts on a lake that hasn't seen a duck in years. The ending was excellent. One of the funniest endings ever. It's interesting that HOI POLLOI and HALF WITS HOLIDAY are on the same DVD. This is an excellent DVD, with only one weak short.

Summary: GOOD CHOICE OF FILMS...BAD QUALITY
Review: This is a good collection however, Columbia has goofed in the quality department and is really doing a disservice to Stooges fans. I for one don't appreciate shelling out money for a DVD when the quality on some of the material is lackluster. I'm speaking of the short Higher Than a Kite that is contained in this collection. Nice to see one of their wartime efforts make its way to DVD however the quality of the film is GRAINY. This wouldn't be a big deal except I know that better source material is out there. If you've caught this short on AMC or check the clips that were used in the trailers on the VHS releases, you'll know what I'm talking about. The version of this short that appeared in the VHS version is dark and grainy. Instead of taking the opportunity to correct this, they have obviously used the same material for the DVD release....they've goofed AGAIN. This short wasn't the only one to suffer such a fate when these were released on VHS. Several other ones were in VERY poor shape and I hope as they slowly make their way to DVD they are remastered since they've shown up remastered on AMC.

I don't think it is fair for Columbia to not take care and pride in what they release especially when better material is out there. So if you are looking to upgrade the handful of VHS episodes that were grainy instead of struck from the 35mm master films as I have, then avoid this volume.

Summary: The Stooges do it again... even from the grave!
Review: This video is, by far, one of the best sets of shorts the boys have ever done. "Nutty but Nice" is an adorable little story about a little girl whose father has been kidnapped for a ransom. She gets really distraught over her daddy being kidnapped that she becomes weak, bed-ridden, and depressed. The boys come to the rescue, and her daddy is brought back safe & sound. What a touching little story! I love it!
