Summary: Charming and Delightful! Holds up well.
Review: I remember lovingly watching Mr Ed when I was young, although not a small child, in the 60's, so I thought I would buy this DVD when I heard it was coming out. I was expecting to find something perhaps childish and a little corny, but to my surprise, it's very funny--in fact, it holds up very well and is quite entertaining for everyone, not just the kids. Actually Ed can be quite frisky. The comedy is great for all the family, but I have to admit the show is always at it's best when Mr Ed is in the scene. It loses something when there is too much human enteraction and Ed is out of the picture. Mr Ed was truly one of a kind and that voice fit him perfectly. A still delightful and charming show.

Review: I've been a huge fan of Mr.Ed for a couple years and i'm very glad that they released it on DVD.This has got some of the funniest episodes of Mr.Ed ever and it was great value costing me only $25.All the episodes are A's,my favorite being Clint
Eastwood meets Mr.Ed.The only thing that was bad about it was the fact that there are no bonus features at all,no interviews with Alan Young or Connie Hines,nor a single thing that mentions who the voice of Mister Ed was(it was Allan Lane,famous for old cowboy movies),but the DVD is good anyway,I hope that they will release The Best of Volume 2 sometime.The episodes are hilarious and this is great value.A+.Enjoy!!!

Summary: Surprisingly Good!
Review: I've watched many of the episodes on the new DVD release and can definitely recommend it. The visual quality was much better than I expected, given that all 21 episodes are packed on 2 disks. They look at least as good, if not better, than what is shown on TV Land. (Though not up to the standard of the Dick Van Dyke transfers). I don't think many people will be dissappointed by the picture quality. I also thought the episode selection was pretty good. Naturally, some good ones were left off, but the 21 on this set are, without question, some of the better episodes. All of these are on the VHS tapes released by Columbia House a few years ago. For those of you who think extras are so important, forget about it. There aren't any. Just the 21 shows, complete from start to finish. Oh, by the way, it's a great show. But you already knew that, didn't you!

Summary: Fun (and funny) for the whole family
Review: Mister Ed, although black-and-white, is still very much a timeless comedy with that great mix of sharp-tongued yet not offensive writing that both adults and children can enjoy. Mister Ed ("Bamboo Harvester" is his real name) never seems to amaze in his talents, and after watching a few episodes it's almost impossible to believe that he *doesn't* really talk! There aren't many shows produced today that a whole range of generations (from young kids through grandparents) can enjoy together, but this is really one of them! The DVD release provides unedited shows, compared to TV re-runs which are edited (2-3 missing minutes) to allow more commercials. Unfortunately with this release, only selected episodes are shown (although they are good!) so the building of the relationship between Mister Ed and Wilbur which occurs in the first few episodes, really isn't seen. This helped established the personalities such as understand why Ed only talks to Wilbur.... but otherwise RECOMMENDED !

Review: Mr. Ed is simply one of the greatest and oddest shows of any time period. I'm 31 years old, and obviously didn't see the show when it originally aired. Yet, during many nights of insomnia I would tune into TV Land each night and try to fall asleep to classics like Dick Van Dyke Show, All In The Family or Andy Griffith. All decent shows, but they've been shown to death over the past 20 years. Around 3a.m. or so, Mr. Ed came on, and instead of falling asleep, I found myself sitting up straight on my couch and laughing out loud at this show. Yes, its stupid, and I semi-remember seeing it as a child in reruns, but it never "stuck", and I guess its because its not a children's show. There's nothing "rated R" or anything, but just because it has a talking animal don't make it Disney. The horse (and its never-credited voice artist) make the perfect character. Its not a "cute" show, cuz Ed is a spoiled brat (er, horse) and just lives to screw up Wilbur's life and marriage. (His wife is gorgeous, although she's now about 70. But if your wife is now gorgeous, she will one day be 70 as well. Knock on wood.) It's surreal, because no ever ever accidentally stumbles onto Ed & Wilbur's talks....when they did, they only heard Wilbur, and never Ed's deep Johnny-Cash baritone. (I bet that the classic intro "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" was influenced by "Hello, I'm Mister Ed".) It was groundbreakingly surreal for its time becasue to my knowledge, there was no final apisode where Mrs. Post found out that the horse talked....There was no sense of closure. And even better, there was no episode that explained why or how Ed could talk. It was all left up in the air, just a simple premise thatmade for some hysterically funny viewing.
For beginners, don't question the show...just watch at least 4 episodes before judging it. You'll see the close (and believable) bond between Wilbur & Ed unfold,which is more real than with his wife or his screwy neighbors (both pairs). The neighbors are good characters, kinda cliche' for TV neighbors, but not at the time since TV was still a young'un. The neighbors are still funnier than "The Mertzes".
So 5-Stars for the show, but only 3-stars for the DVD. It seems they don't care much for Mr. Ed, cuz its only a "Best of". I wouldn't count on them releasing any more on DVD. (What would they call it, "The Lesser Episodes"?), so be content with what we have available. Its sad, cuz I just read where "Punky Brewster Season 1" is coming to DVD.. how does that show merit a full-season disc, when Mr. Ed is compiled into a "best of"? And its not even all of the best ones. The whole Wilbur/Ed Spy-ring episodes are not on here. (When Ed becomes secret agent "Oat-Oat-Seven". Its funnier than it sounds when it comes from (ugh) the horse's mouth.
So kudos to everyone involved in the show (not the DVD) By far my favorite show of the 60's. And its now 3rd on my all-time favorite comedy list (#1:Newhart, #2:Soap)

Summary: Good family fun!
Review: Mr. Ed was a fun TV show from televisions roaring past. Simple, good clean, entertaining fun with the next-door neighbors and Mr. Ed the talking horse, getting his owner in all kinds of trouble. This kind of wholesome entertainment is lost in today's TV world. How many times do we talk to our pets and wish they would speak back? Mr. Ed is well-done, with good humor and a 'bedside manner' way of telling the story. Hope you enjoy as I did in my childhood. Always fascinated how they got the horse to appear as if he was really doing the talking. This is a bargain, if you enjoy classic situation comedy between an animal and his human friend. Can you hear the famous song...a horse is a horse of course....?

Summary: Great Value, Great Show
Review: Mr. Ed was the foundation of Filmways' dynasty of offbeat and hayseed TV shows, with rerun staples like Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres and The Addams Family. Of all these shows, Mr. Ed is perhaps the simplest and most charming of all. This compilation has high production values, from the attractive artwork, fun slipcase and separate program synopsis. Shows are culled from the first three seasons only, to keep some continuity with the characters. After the death of co-star Larry Keating (Roger Addison), new neighbors were introduced and we will likely meet them in further volumes. Oddly, the 21 shows are spread over two disks but three sides-- Disk 1 is a double-sided disk. I completely missed side two of Disk 1 the first time through!! The original source material for the most part is in excellent condition and I only saw one or two episodes with very minor problems. Because of the high resolution of the DVD media, it is fun to watch for interesting clues about how Ed talked. In many shots you can see very thin strings or cables dragging behind Ed or across his coat, and often you can clearly see his bridle being "tugged" as he is cued to talk. My only disappointment is that the producers failed to present these shows in the order they were originally aired, and the 21 episode are scattered around the first three years of the show. That prevents hardcore TV fans from watching the story and characters develop. It's a very minor point, though, because this disk is a treasure for any Mr. Ed fan and a wonderful value.
