Summary: Penultimate Buffy
Review: This season of Buffy is a feast. Almost from start to finish the episodes crackle and pop..The plotting, the comedy, the scary and the drama all balance in a way that I think only Season 2 rivals. There are a few slow moments in the middle (Shadow leaps to mind) But from Buffy vs Dracula to The Gift the story is rich and the characters engaging. The writers at Mutant Enemy are in top form. I love the "Scooby Gang" dynamic in this season. Dawn's entrance/presence plays smoothly in a way that seems to disappear in season 6. The Body should have won an Emmy. And if you are a true Buffy fan, The Gift will break your heart. A must have DVD for Fans.

Summary: The sharks are in the water...
Review: After an atrocious fourth season, the fifth year of BTVS managed to create a few scattered moments of triumph in a show that would soon jump the shark and turn into something beyond recognition.If the sharks were spotted in season four, they were definitely going for the kill in this season. The introduction of Dawn, Buffy's little sister, was a huge mistake on the show's part. Not only did it require rewriting the entire memories of the characters to have her fit in, but she was a whiny little brat. But soon the real season arc begins to kick in and we learn Dawn is actually a key to a hell dimension, made into human form and inserted into Buffy's life as a sister so the key could be protected from Glory, the evil goddess who wants to use the key to open the portal and get back to her hell dimension. Often times I was confused about whether I was watching Passions or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is the year we see Buffy's mother bite it due to a brain tumor, the exit of Buffy's boyfriend Riley (thank God!), and the beginning of Buffy and Spike's future relationship. The fabulous stand alone episodes from seasons 1-3 were on their way out in favor of one long story arc that veered far too close to soap. The times were changing fast on Buffy, and everything that went wrong in the last seasons was being set up here. The characters aren't nearly as likeable and the formula for having someone cry every episode was starting to get set up. But despite those flaws, the show did give us extreme moments of greatness, as witnessed in the episode The Body, which features the death of Buffy's mother. The season finale, The Gift, was the show's last episode on the WB, and the irony in that is that it was actually the last episode of Buffy before the sharks closed in and devoured the show. The fun little show I used to love and enjoy was on its way to becoming Buffy 90210. Consider this the ultimate beginning of the end for a once great series.

Summary: Death is Your Gift
Review: Season Five is phenomenal. This is the year of origins, family, duty, loss and philosophical journeys. It's a testament to the strength of the show to introduce a younger sister (Dawn) this late in the game and not feel like a gimmick. Not only did it deepen the narrative, but it also didn't betray integrity of the show. While some may argue that Season Five got dark, it just feels right. The overall tone may be more somber but do not confuse it with decline in quality. Even the funny moments had to be earned. This is Buffy at one of its best.

Summary: Buffy: Season 5, The best and worst of BTVS
Review: I know that many long time fans of Buffy found that season four started a down-hill run for the show, to which I agree. I also acknowledge that many fans did not enjoy Riley as Buffy's love; however, to that I completely disagree. Riley was the one Buffy should have never let go. I hated some of the turns that Josh did with his character in season five, and was sad to see him go. The worst villan, ever, was Glory. I find it hard to believe that she was voted so popular by fans. The actress was terrible, her lines delivered blandly, without real emotions. She was more of a super model, then a super villan. I wanted to see more developement of Willow and Tara's relationship, instead of the dull witted hum-drum that was Xander and Anya. However, there were some great moments, such the acclaimed episode, The Body. Although I'm not a big fan of Anya, her frustration and sadness in the episode reflected ours as fans. Buffy seemed truly alone in season five, even though she was surrounded by people who loved her. I believe Josh wanted her to be seperate, apart from everyone around her. Her volunerability was best expressed as she waited by Joyce's grave until sunset, and Angel appears and encloses her hand with his. It was truly a touching moment. I enjoyed the end episodes, but I thought that Buffy going to shock-land, and Willow having to retrieve her was a bit much. Even Buffy can only have so much angst.

Review: These buffy episodes are 22 of the best ones! the begining weirded me out a little. If ur a buffy fan then u have to buy this, along with the other 4 seasons! this season is a big turning point in buffy's life! and her mothers!:( Buffy must battle a few more stronger demons, along with haveing to deal with her mothers life, and most inportant:
dealing with a not-so "real" sister! this season really is one of the best one out to buy so far! Buffy is the boomb! so get this dvd, and make that desion ur's!

Summary: What happened to my show??
Review: Having watched the series since the low-budget 1992 movie of the same name, I was horrified by this apparent fusion of 90210/Buffy. Although there is some irony to my claim seeing as how Luke Perry stared in the campy big screen version, this has all of the camp and none of the humor of that incarnation which at least wanted the viewer to have fun, be entertained and generally like the product they had watched. If it did not have the Buffy name attached, I would have thought the TV network was trying to torture us in an experiment. There is just so much wrong (morally, structurally etc) in the Buffy cannon that I cannot believe it received the public praise that it did. I will just comment on the highlights of what I found was most objectionable. Riley's gone, but that is no consolation because we are stuck with Dawn. Realizing many viewers prefered the early season romance with Angel, the writers (now unfortunately headed by Marti Noxin) attempted to pair Buffy with Spike, only to come up with equally insipid oneliners that sound as if my mother's junior high students wrote them in a scriptwriting contest and actually had connections to make their creation hit their airwaves. James Marsters may be a personally better actor than David Boreanaz, but the recycled storylines and Buffy's incompetently explained transformation from assertive go-getter to passive victim (as well as the process itself) was embarassing and insulting. Noxon et all...did not understand or did not want to understand that it wasn't the fact Buffy had a souled vampire boyfriend in general it was supposedly how he acted aroud Buffy (multidimensional as opposed to a teenybopper cartoon) which was what really counted. Also the fact that this one had been chipped as opposed to gypsy cursed meant the audience was subjected to an endless stream of sex plots, again inserting an innappropriate amount of soap into the show. On top of everything, Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland) died and we never got an equally realistic resolution to that storyline. Because Buffy never has to deal with home foreclosure, calls from Gallery employees or potential clients wondering what happended to Joyce, the transition WAS handled very shoddily and did not reflect the BTVS I had fallen in love with. Buffy and company also coincidentially never have to deal with anything like the utility company turning off the power despite their apparent lack of funds with mom's sudden death. Likewise, her father Hank Summers never steps in again----although we certainly saw more of him in the earlier seasons when everthing was not a prolonged soap opera. That a long-time and hardcore Buffy fan such as myself would not touch this series even if somebody gave it to me for free should be a very big warning sign. Please do not waste your money on this purchase, and stick to Buffy how Joss meant it to be portrayed by getting seasons 1-3.

Summary: Buffy's Greatest Triumphs and Defeats
Review: The first three seasons of the series are top notch in my book, however when season four came around I stuck with the show becasue it still had it's moments, but sadly it wasn't what it used to be. However when this season began on the screen I found myself intriqued once more. The season wasn't dark and gloomy, but the plot had majorly improved sense before. Don't get me wrong though. Like every season this one has it's cons. I fail to understand how people come to conclusion that Glory is the all time greatest villian. Sure she's the strongest, but she's so stuck up and goes for that pretty girl look, makeing some like myself not take her seriously. If you think I'm one of the few who don't like Glory maybe you should hear this. Joss Wendon planned on bringing Glory back in the final five episodes of season seven, but so many fans hated the idea that Joss decided not to do it. I probably would've appreciated Glory's character more if they'd made Xander her host instead of Ben, which is what Joss planned to do in the beginning. Riley actually impressed me in this season. Unlike season four where he was the center of attention and really close to Buffy he actually strays away from Buffy making you feel kind of sorry for him. However the start of this season was the beginning of the end of my love for Spike. I don't know about the rest of you, but I liked him allot better when he was evil and trying to kill the slayer. Riley's departure and Dawn's entrance were probably the two biggest upsets of the season. Just when I was starting to like Riley he leaves, typical! Dawn's character for the most part was annoying. Don't get me wrong, her role in this season is extremely important, but her role in seasons six and seven are so pointless it would've made more sense to kill her off in this finale rather then have her stick around. Despite my complaints this is an excellent season. It definetly has the best finale. Most of my favorite episodes of the entire series are in this one. Another down side is that Angel only appears briefly in one episode. Thankfully the plots of this season where so good his character wasn't needed. This set is a must buy for all Buffy fans.

Summary: A Change In The Series
Review: Originally thought to be the final year of the series, season five works well as a transitional piece. You'll notice throughout, and espicially with the final episode, that Joss wasn't certain whether or not the series would continue for future seasons.
Above all other years of Buffy, season five marks a turning point in the series; the introduction of new characters, and the fleshing out of those who already exist, is enthralling to watch. Whether you feel that the series was better left to five seasons, or was more suited being drawn out through season seven, the fifth DVD is a must see for buffy fans, and crucial point to the development of the buffy world. A must-have for all fans of the show.

Review: Season 5 is my favorite season after season 3. There are so many brilliantly written episodes in season 5: The Body, without any soundtrack, is so pure and beautiful and sad you feel the hurting and cry right along with Buffy and the Scoobies. The Gift is top 5 of all time. I love I Was Made to Love You also!! It's funny. But I think what made this season so good is that Buffy is faced with very grown up responsibilities in an arena other than her slaying. The addition of Dawn was perfectly timed and Glory is one of the best villains in the series. I love how Xander grew up and in a lot of ways, he is the one who has accomplished more than anyone else; he has a good job, a great apartment and Anya. I love Anya!! Her blunt remarks are always on. Even in The Body. When she says she was enjoying fruit punch and Joyce will no longer drink it...tears still well up in my eyes. All in all a ... great season and I cannot wait for the dvd collection to be released here in the States.
