Rating: Summary: Babylon 5 Simply the best Review: Babylon 5's first season is not the best of the series and is very slow.To those who are new to the series stick with it the later seasons( hopefully to come) are worth it.Babylon 5 tells a story unriveled unlike any other I have ever seen. It worth every penny spent.
Rating: Summary: FINALLY! -- A sci-fi show worth collecting in it's entirety! Review: Let's start right off by saying that BABYLON 5 is the greatest non-anthology sci-fi show EVER produced for television. This is no exaggeration. What of the original STAR TREK you say? Well, as much as I loved that show, it unfortunately grew worse as each season progressed ( 1. Great, 2. Good, 3. Bad ). The other Trek offshoots ranged from the very good, though quite sterile NEXT GENERATION, to the absolutely terrible VOYAGER. DEEP SPACE NINE was undoubtedly the best of the Treks but it owed much of its success to the wake up call it's creators received from B5 between it's 3rd and 4th seasons (4th season onwards mirrored B5's story-line in many ways). BABYLON 5 on the other hand maintained a tremendous level of quality for 5 full seasons (season 1 had to introduce the characters and landscape of the massive story to come, while season 5 was an eloquent examination of the 'legacy' left behind by the monumental events of the first four seasons. Because of this, neither of those seasons is as 'intense' story-wise as the middle 3 seasons --- just great in different, more subtle ways.In the end I can simply say that if you like sci-fi on a grand scale; sci-fi that is dramatic, thought provoking and even awe-inspiring then you need look no further that J. M. Straczynski's epic 5 year masterpiece. Buy the DVD's and immerse yourselves in the most opulent and creative universe ever conceived for the small screen --- you will not regret it. In many ways, BABYLON 5 is to Sci-fi television what LORD of THE RINGS was to Fantasy/Adventure literature, and what the 'ORIGINAL' 3 STAR WARS films were to Sci-fi/fantasy movies --- the apex of creative inspiration within their respective mediums.
Rating: Summary: What do you want? Review: Well, I finally got what _I_ wanted -- at least in part -- Babylon 5 on DVD. What I want now (aside from season 2) is the heads of the WB execs who approved this DVD set stuck on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that DVDs were meant for high quality and they should give nothing less. I want to look into their lifeless eyes and wave, like this *smiles, wiggles fingers*. I must agree with almost all that's gone before. The episodes themselves are wonderful, and it's very nice to see them in the origional widescreen. The sound is fantastic! The problems arise in the FX shots. I watch my DVDs through my computer and am thus used to being up close to a high quality picture. These DVDs, however, seem to have never even been considered for DVD-ROM viewing, and thus the FX shots are of noticible different quality than when viewed through a TV. For those of you who do watch DVDs through a TV, rest assured the picture is crystal clear at all times. For those of you who watch through computers, prepare for several "ug" moments, espeically towards the start of the season when the FX people were still trying to get things working smoothly. The documentries are pretty cool, and I enjoyed seeing the whole of the origional documentry on it. The retrospective on the DVD set could have been better -- less hopping between actors after simple sound bites -- but still was quite enjoyable. The promos for each ep are nifty, too. What I found quite amusing is that in all the thanks given on the documentation for the set by both JMS and producer Douglas Netter, neither bothers to thank the people at WB for their support. (I wonder why). Of course since it's mentioned that it took 5 years for the series to even be picked up by a network because so many disbelieved in a series already plotted over 5 years for MODERN television audiences (read: people with the attention span of a gnat). Thankfully those who create cult followings always seem to have such better taste than the general population. In the end, I would have to say I'm satisified with this DVD. To finally have the complete season of such a truly wonderful series is a great feeling. Now all I want is for it to be given the treatment it deserves for the other four parts. If seasons 3 and 4 end up like this one, the execs will most likely meet the fate of Mr. Morden, as described above. Until then, this is still a strong first step upon a truly magnificant journey.
Rating: Summary: Best of the Best Review: Babylon 5 is the best of the science fiction series I have ever seen. My husband and I are equally impressed with the series and the current season 1 which we have just purchased. The DVD format allows you to follow the story lines closely and not have to wait for or miss an episode. Please put out the rest of the seasons on DVD ASAP. I can't wait to contiue this epic event in my home.
Rating: Summary: Thank the Lord Review: I, as well as many others, have been waiting for this to happen. B5 is without a doubt one of the best Scifi shows ever. The first season is a little slow in places and some episodes do seem very pointless when you finish the wonder that is the complete series. By the time you reach Season 2 and the splendors that are the Shadows and Mr. Morden(huzzah for creepy evilness) if you are not hooked than you should get your pulse checked because you just might be suffering from a slight case of death.
Rating: Summary: Babylon 5 - a wonderful surprize Review: True, the first season is not the best one, but the quality improvement in audio and video make this a must for Babylon 5 addicts like me. I hope I will not have to wait long for the following seasons.
Rating: Summary: What is it with the cardboard case? Review: I don't know how the Americans are doing with this box set,but the Australian region 4 Babylon 5 box set came in an impossibly tight and fragile cardboard case which makes it very difficult to remove the folding case with all the episodes. It is closed at one end and all this does is make the owner open that end to try and push the folding set out of the tight case. It is only a matter of time before the cardboard case rips. I hope that JMS gets this problem fixed before the season 2 box set is released. The series? Great series, bad packaging.
Rating: Summary: And so it begins... Review: B5 is perhaps the best science fiction show ever created (maybe second best, if you really like DS9). This is the first chapter in the five year made-for-tv novel that is Babylon 5. This is not a flashy DVD with "cool" menus or jam-packed "extras." Its all about the story, a story that if given a chance, might just change your life.
Rating: Summary: Finally!! Review: Finally Babylon 5 on DVD! I only hope the other seasons come out at a faster pace than the M*A*S*H sets. Other folks have complained about the quality. I must say I haven't noticed any quality issues but I'm not watching it on a HDTV set or anything either.
Rating: Summary: Excellent series finally on DVD Review: Like others, I've been waiting for a DVD version of the series. Watching the series in DVD quality is so much better. I can't wait to buy the rest of the seasons. The DVD's themselves are outstanding. The only negative I could say about this is that there isn't much in the way of extra features. Also, I found WB's packaging a bit shoddy. The spine appears to be hot glued to hold the heavy plastic center sections in and my spine was separated when I received it.
