Rating: Summary: Amending my previous review Review: In my previous review, I mentioned the poor video transfer. Further investigation has found that some DVD players have the ability to determine if the DVD came from "film" or from "video". The mastering for these DVDs causes confusion in this system, which results in a bad picture. If you set your DVD player to force "video", you get what the good reviews describe. Otherwise, you can mostly expect what the bad reviews describe.
Rating: Summary: Missing DVD and non-response from Warner ruins set Review: I was disappointed when my copy of the set arrived and I discovered that Disc 2 was in fact an extra Disc 4 in sheep's clothing. I was more disappointed when the replacement copy was the same, and angry when Warner failed to reply to any of my 3 emails to various divisions.I enjoyed watching Disc 1 in widescreen, and had no problems with white spots or dirt or artifacting of any sort. I found the sound to be crisp. I'm sure Disc 3-6 were fine but I didn't bother watching them once I made sure the Disc 2 episodes were missing, not improperly labelled. I'm now waiting for my refund. Will I try ordering again later? Maybe. It would help if Warner gave a damn about its customers.
Rating: Summary: When can we expect the second season Review: I thought this was great can't wait for the second season
Rating: Summary: Great story, Lousy visual Review: This is at least just to reinforce from some other reviews that yes, the transfer for season 1 is basically [junk]. I don't know much about errors in DVD transfer in the technical description dept. but it definitely looks like the source film stock might be suspect. I can't believe that in only 8-9 years that the film stock would be this bad. There is consistant marks and what can be best described as flashes of lines etc. throughout almost all the live action scenes. The CGI space scenes fair a lot better. It's a shame as this is probably the best envisioned and executed sci fi TV show in my life time (32 years). Unfortunately my "basic cable" channel picture quality has a permanent haze over it so taping these episodes off TV would look even worse (must be that beautiful digital clarity that the cable provider sells it as). Anyway, the story and character arc's which are well described already and known to almost anyone buying this will probably save the day but Warner Bros. [stinks] for the how they've set this modern day, classic document into the world.....
Rating: Summary: Great series, disappointing box set Review: Ditto what everyone here has said about this amazing story. And ditto what some have pointed out as production shortcomings regarding this DVD box set. The extras are nice, the sound mix is terrific but the picture quality is disappointing. I was expecting the aliasing issues with the F/X, which were apparently produced in full-frame and not the letterboxed ratio of the live-action shots. What stunned me were the scratches and dirt on this transfer -- isn't the whole point of going DVD so we don't have to put up with such things? I'm looking forward to Seasons 2,3, and 4 (the 5th is the weakest by far). But I do hope Warner Bros. can clean up these transfers.
Rating: Summary: I'd rather watch Andromeda Review: This show is pretty awful (at least the pilot and first season). The captain, when he doesn't look like a deer frozen in the headlights, delivers his lines with a 60% timing accuracy. It's no wonder they replaced him. The CGI is so incredibly horrid, "Mind's Eye" looks like the "Fifth Element" in comparison. The sets and actors occasionally pull me in, but overall it's just so empty and boring when cast against shows like TNG, DS9, VOY or SG-1. According to the reviews, many people are in love with this show, so maybe it gets better. I just can't watch Babylon without painkillers.
Rating: Summary: love the show hate the dvd's Review: While I still feel Babalon 5 will earn a place in Sci-Fi history as one of the more enduring shows. I was extremely displeased with the quality of the DVD's. I mean, I'm not knocking the show, I love it. The DVD was like watching an old film print. Those little flecks of white here and there on the screen drove me nuts. Hey, I'll probably still purchase the rest of the 4 seasons if they put them out but please clean em up.
Rating: Summary: This IS SEASON 1 Review: The Season the previous reviewer is referring to isn't a season, its the Pilot. Which is available on DVD. After the pilot, most shows go through some retooling, Babylon 5 was no different. Now, I'm holding off on buying this cause the last time I started investing in Babylon 5, Warner Bros decided to stop after realisng Seaons 1, 5 and the start of season 2 on VHS in the states... leaving me with not even half of the series.. and a great wad of money wasted. I'd recommend peopel wait until all 5 seasons have release dates before making this kind of investment
Rating: Summary: Dissatisfaction with DVD Review: I, along with other B5 fans, have waited a long time for the show to come out on DVD. However, after receiving my order last week (12 NOV 2002), I was disheartened with the entire boxset because of the poor and inconsistent quality of the transfer to DVD. I don't know what Warner Brothers used for a digital master but it's apparent that they didn't give B5 the same quality control that they would with a movie that they release on DVD. Every show is so annoying with the inconsistent visual quality in the imagery. Some scenes, e.g. - a closeup, may be perfectly clear, yet, the next scene would be muddled with poor visually quality. The space scenes in particular suffer the worst quality control. In my opinion, few CGI space scenes in this boxset are of good visual quality. The only thing that was consistently good and didn't suffer from visual distortion was the titles at the beginning and end of each show. Everything inbetween, in my opinion, left a lot to be desired in quality control. On the plus side, the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and the Widescreen helped to assuage my disappointment. I can only hope that Season Two will show a marked improvement by Warner Brothers.
Rating: Summary: Good show, combing, scratched filmstock, disc rot Review: Updated: This DVD set does not play at all well on progressive mode DVD players set to "Film" mode. The combing (horizontal line motion artifacts) is almost unwatchable if your DVD player is set to film mode. Switch to "Smart" or "Video" mode, and the problems largely disappear. The filmstock used in mastering this set is scratched and unenhanced to say the least. There also would appear to be a number of people who have had problems like myself with rapid decay of the chemical data layer (laser rot/disc rot). My Disc 5 is basically unplayable a matter of months after I bought it (with no scratches). Warner Brothers seems to have gone to great lengths to have absolutely no Customer Service contact info at all. Love the show, but I'm giving serious thought to not buying anymore WB discs until they back up what they sell with a little assurance. This is just terrible manufacturing, and they show nothing but contempt for their customers in putting out junk like this.
