Summary: Great Series - Poor Audio Quality
Review: My So Called Life is indeed, as many say, the first tv series to accurately portray the high school condition. Few TV series have had such an diverse cast of characters and stories that seem genuinely a part of one another's lives.

The only downside to the My So Called Life complete series DVD is on the technical side. The sound quality seems fair at best. Anytime music plays there is noticeable distortion, at times severe. I've never experienced this issue, or anything similar, on any DVD so I do not believe this is a technical issue with my theater setup. I'm not sure how a DVD can be released for sale with such poor sound quality.

As of now I have gone though half the episodes and all have music related distortion problems. Except for the opening title sequence I've yet to find a scene that has music and no distortion. While the content of series is in tact, the audio distortion does ruin some of the best scenes. Fans of the series should be aware of the audio distortion problem.

Review: ...
this is the story of a family, the Chases, including two girls, one husband and one wife and their friends and life circle. i find the writing amazing. you get almost everyone's point of view, from the kids to teacher's to the parents and you see how connected we all are no matter the differencs.
the character development is so deep. they really made these characters three dimensonal. i find these characters more real then some people i know. the writing, the acting, & everything is brilliant and this is the perfect series.
this show has dealt, wonderfully, with issues like teen sex, drinking, homelessness as well as the life of a teen. there has not been anything that has even comne close. no show is even in the same builidng as this show. way ahead of the pack.

Summary: Astounding series, gone too soon!
Review: Like pretty much everyone, while this brilliant show was wasted on Thursday nights, I was watching "Friends." A few months later, I came across an episode on MTV. It turned out to be part of a marathon they were running. Long story short... I didn't leave the TV for several hours. By the early morning of the next day, I'd seen about half of the episodes, still wanted more but just couldn't stay awake.

This series was supposed to target teens. I can tell you that I, in my 40s, was amazed by the depth that Claire Danes brought to her role. In fact the entire cast was magnificent. I'm pleasantly surprised that the series has made it's way to DVD. From what I hear, the story of how that came to be is nearly as dramatic as this show.

Summary: Melodrama at its highest.
Review: Day-time soaps have nothing over this program. It is a fine example of writing that is badly researched middle-of-the road pop-psych.

None of the characters have any emotion or depth and are simply moved through "life lessons" with no will of their own. It's an after school special for an affected generation. Maybe, however, if you're part of that generation, you'll find some solace in scenarios that are no doubt similar to You're So-Called Life.

Summary: Best show about teenagers you will ever see
Review: It's hard to believe it's been over 8 years since this wonderful show's only season aired and was cancelled. It was too good for a public who preferred to watch shows like Blossom that do not make them think or feel. Still easily the best, most realistic show about teenagers that I have ever seen (I am 38 years old). If you are in to well-acted, well written show that can (at different times) make you laugh, cry, happy and angry, get these DVD's. You will be in for a treat.

Summary: My So Called Classics!!!
Review: I dont have the dvd set, but I have all the episodes that I taped myself from the mtv reruns of this classic show. This series was nothing short of a masterpiece. Pick it up, it's well worth it.

Summary: You'll watch it over and over
Review: The only thing wrong with this series is that it was too short! Leave it to network television to cancel a show as wonderful as MSCL after only 19 episodes. What an outstanding 19 episodes they are, though! MSCL was probably the first primetime show (and perhaps the only) to depict such a realistic view of high school life. Angela Chase was a nice girl from a nice family that had their problems like any other family. She outgrew her childhood best friend & instead chose to hang out with two new eccentric & more exciting friends, Rayanne and Rickie--two of the best characters ever on television. She also had a crush on Jordan, the good-looking, quiet guy, who always looked serious & had somewhat of a bad-boy image. She didn't have a crush on the popular football player like most teenage girls are expected to. This show covered many serious & real issues in it's short run from teenage homosexuality, bullies, teenage sex & guns in school to being betrayed by your best friend & feeling like you can't trust your own parents. It even dealt with the problems in Angela's parents' marriage. The writing & directing in each episode are superb and so is the acting. Nothing is overly dramatic or in-your-face. There are subtle connections & ironies. When the characters explain what they're thinking or feeling, however unpoetic their speeches may be, you know exactly what they mean & that's the way it's supposed to be. I love the fact that they wear the same outfits more than once, that Angela only wears noticeable makeup on special occasions & that the teenagers don't speak like knowing adults & instead say 'like' & stumble and stutter over their words. This is without a doubt one of the best shows that has ever been on TV & it is definitely worth owning on DVD. You'll watch each episode over and over & never regret that you bought the collection!

Summary: My So Called Review ...
Review: I loved "My So Called Life". It's one of the best DVD purchases I have made in the past year!

The storylines are complex and believable. They deal the angst of being a teenager, but also with the uglier sides of the teenage years such as sexuality, homelessness, alcoholism, self-esteem, etc., which most main stream shows these days avoid.

The characters are amazing. They are not perfect, nor are they infinitely rich. They are very real and their interaction is intricate.

Add humor to the mix, along with superbe acting and you have the receipe for what is undoubtedly a truly amazing series.

This is the series that shows like "Dawson's Creek" and "Roswell" aspire to imitate, but fail miserably ...

Summary: TV series never disappointing, but DVD is...
Review: I never write reviews...ever...
But after watching this show tonight, after 7, 8 years, I had to comment...
The show is the most amazing thing I have ever seen on tv. I was struck when I watched the show tonight simply because it is so realistic. The reason there are legions of fans worldwide is because the show is sooooooooo real. In high school, I felt like I WAS Angela Chase, only I never got the guy I wanted, even for a second. Angela never said the exact right thing, and neither did I. Angela always said just too much. And her anxiety over sex was real. When Jordan Catalano finally took Angela's hand in his, walking through the hallway, my heart lept. I relived the same emotions from my high school experience in watching My So-Called Life tonight. The writing was that good. Maybe it's good that they took the show off the air. The writing was so great that it could have only gone downhill if the show continued...Maybe I'm just trying to rationalize why I only have 19 hours of the Chase family...
The DVD is a disappointment with special features. There aren't any. Oh well, the show is good enough to buy without any special features, and a complete disgrace in the menu design...That's why there are only 4 stars, because the show is terrific!!!

Summary: Profound
Review: My (19 yr. old) neice told us (my 50ish childless wife and I) this was one of her favorite series and we thought why not put ourselves in her shoes for a few hours? Boy was I surprised by just how good, and profound, this series was. The writers/actors masterfully dealt with many of the classic issues our society confronts daily: vanity, love, betrayal, lust, disappointment, alienation, desertion, career burnout, mother/daughter relationships, etc. And ultimately I think that is what did the series in; it was just a few years ahead of its time in its portrayal of these issues in a mainstream venue (i.e., network TV). But there are gems here; I laughed out loud on many occasions (the "Pimple" episode is a classic) and nearly cried on several occasions as well (the episode where Ricky is beaten by his "uncle" and left homeless but is taken in for a short time by Angela's family and ultimately by one of his also gay teachers - now is that taking a risk for a series in 1994 or what?). Another possible first is the fact that in the first (and unfortunately only) season, they have Halloween, Christmas and New Year's episdodes. My only regret is that they cancelled the series after only one year - although my neice contents herself with the thought that, "But just think, it was so good it could only go downhill from that first season".
