Summary: Star Trek's shifting parentage
Review: The original series was orphaned by network execs who I'm sure have a special place awaiting them in the fiery pit.The Star Trek concept was kept alive for years by faithful fans such as Ms. Trimble. There were always rumors of a movie or maybe a regeneration of the series. We got both. But let's face it. If it weren't for the succes of Star Wars, STTMP would never have been produced. And then having been produced became a half-brother to Luke and Liea and step brother to its competitor "Alien." Most of us have seen both movies. Which one held your attention longest? It's not that Star Trek (in all its varients) has been bad. But it owes its life to George Lucas and with the exception of "Wrath of Kahn" just never recaptured the halcyon days of adventure. Star Trek became a political statement. Whenever you become a political statement (and a PC one at that) you've eliminated many avenues of development. You can't have the cutting edge that Alien had or the free-wheeling of StarWars. STTMP is what Twain said of Wagner's music. It's better than it looks. But sci-fi fans demand the look before the substance. What Star Trek has prodcued since Wrath of Kahn is largely back peddling. And since the Alien movies have lost their edge, too, the true sci-fi fan may be hard pressed to find thought and entertainment in one package (the efforts of Chris Carter notwithstanding).

Summary: A better film than most would have you believe.
Review: The merits of Star Trek- The Motion Picture will always be a debate. Most "Trek" fans were disappointed with the film, citing an overemphasis on special f/x, lack of character development, and poor editing. While this may be true, I suppose it depends on HOW you view the film.This movie is a very intellegent journey (I DO use the word journey, NOT "adventure") into the unknown. Working on many different levels, the film focuses on this theme in the form of many journeys: The Enterprise's journey into the V'ger entity, Kirk's journey back to the world of command, Spock's journey toward personal enlightenment, etc. Although the film IS a bit slow and stiff, it is HARDLY the dreary mess it has been portrayed as. I can't see how anyone who has seen this film and witnessed the scenes between Shatner and Nimoy can say that it "lacks character" or "dosen't have the relationships that were present in the series". This is one of the BEST films for character development and relationships. Also, the visuals are stunning (even today), Jerry Goldsmith's score is fantastic, and the story is intellegent and well developed. The film COULD have been better (there are some sequences that go on for ever), but this is still a great movie, even if it is not considered great "Star Trek". NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON THE EXTENDED VERSION OF THE FILM, WHICH INCLUDES 12 MINUTES OF EXTRA FOOTAGE. Unfortunately, the widescreen edition does not include the extra footage, so it's a toss-up: the footage improves the story dramatically while the widescreen is a MUST for a movie with this much visual quality. Solution: I own 'em both.

Review: This movie was an efficient stepping stone for the movie series. It was elegant, the special effects were avrage in some areas, (Klingon ships)but astounding in others,( warp drive). The music was good but the story line and character development was in need of help.

Summary: Correction:Star Trek - the SLOW MOTION picture
Review: The excellent effects and the haunting soundtrack are the only things really worth seeing this for. It's all very slow, aimless and more akin to 2001 than Star Trek. This is the series' first full-length film, and it's hardly a great debut.

Review: A wonderful mystery is at the heart of the unconventional "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," and its conclusion will not disappoint. Admittedly this film is a departure from the Star Trek formula, though the result is beautiful, haunting, and realistic in its portrayal of a possible future for humankind. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" dares to tell a meaningful story rather than dazzle audiences with meaningless action, proving this film goes where few science fiction films have gone before.

Review: This picture was a mixed bag when it first came out years ago. It was terrific seeing the original cast back in action and fantastic to see the new Enterprise and all those special effects. On the other hand, several long, drawn-out sequences and a apparent recycling of "Star Trek" TV plotlines ("The Changeling", for one) were drawbacks. What saves the film is seeing that wonderful trio, Kirk, Spock and McCoy, together again (not to mention the rest of the crew), and the terrific musical score.

Review: Star Strek - The Movie is nothing less than brilliant. One of the greatest sci-fi films of all times. Yes, even competing with Star Wars! Robert wise is a gem and I recomend all of his other projects as well, that's if fine tuned cinema is your cup of tea.

Review: The problem with this film is that they expand an episode's worth of material into an entire film--and a LONG film at that. The previous reviewer is wrong--it's not a matter of being too action-oriented to accept a more cerebral plot; it's simply the film's appalling sense of pace. The endless panoramic views (the opening, panning around the ship, takes, I kid you not FIFTEEN MINUTES), while somewhat interesting in their own right, do not exactly make for riveting viewing. With some decisive editing, this could have been a decent hour-long feature, but as it is it just meanders interminably. Worth seeing for die-hards, but not for ordinary civilians.

Review: Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a masterpiece. In the minds of many Trekkies or Trekkers (or whatever you call them these days!), the fact that it didn't have too many phaser fights or tribbles falling all over the place made Star Trek : The Motion Picture a failure. On the contrary, if you are an ardent fan of science fiction itself, not restricted just to Star Trek, then I recommend this film without reservation. The Motion Picture is a classic, voyage into something unknown, something so incomprehensible that leaves the viewer (with a brain), continually revising his/her/it's speculation with every new clue that emerges in this compelling plot. The re-uniting of the original cast with their amiable idiosyncracies provides additional flair to the admirable special effects, stylishly coupled with a trippy new-age soundtrack. If it's "Shoot 'em up!" Science fiction that you desire, then Wrath of Khan would better suit your belligerent needs, however, if you'd like to see Star Trek, with an intelligent, intense and serious veneer... this is your movie! In my opinion, this is clearly the best Star Trek movie out of the bunch (with Star Trek VI : The Undiscovered Country, a close second).
