Summary: Star Trek for everyone: "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"
Review: DVD: Read the many reviews already here if you need life support waiting for the DVD to arrive....It's not "Ben Hur", but it is the finest, well rounded Star Trek film ever made....

It's the one to see if you want to see why there are Trekies, or if you just want to enjoy a very well made, almost perfectly made, film.

The rapport between Shantner and Nimoy is almost not acting it is so well executed. Read the other reviews.....over 20 with 5 stars, people taking their time to let you know they thought it was great...
This is the one!

Summary: The best of Trek!
Review: This is the best Star Trek movie ever released. Taking an unexpected turn, The Voyage Home transports the main characters back to the twentieth century, looking for some humpbacked whales. This sounds preposterous, but it works. It is also rather funny to see the actors enjoying themselves playing in a normal environment for a chance. While most Star Trek movies are strictly for fans, this is one that anybody can enjoy, combining action, humor and a good plot.

Summary: Quite possibly the best classic Star Trek adventure!
Review: This has to be one of the best Trek adventures with the original crew. If you like this, I recommend Time After Time, another time travel movie, or City on the Edge of Forever, another classic Trek adventure. Don't waste your time trying to get Voyager & DS9 episodes. Kick back with the classic crew! End of transmission------

Summary: Still the high point of the series
Review: STIV remains the most likable and entertaining of the now over 20-year movie franchise. The characters are to the point now where they are very endearing and Leonard Nimoy really proves himself to be an impressive director. Add this one to your DVD collection even if you're not a big Star Trek fan. You definitely won't be sorry.

Summary: A humorous movie, if a little unrealistic.
Review: A funny thing happened on the way home. We blew up our starship, swiped a Klingon Bird of Prey, and reincarnated my buddy. Man, am I in dutch with my boss.

This is Kirk's dilemma at the beginning of THE VOYAGE HOME, but it gets a hell of a lot better. The crew of the late great starship Enterprise decide to go home and face the consequences of their actions. Lucky them, that the **** hits the fan on Earth before they arrive.

It turns out that we stupid humans killed off all the whales in the early 21st Century. The whales had been talking to this big probe in space all these years (without the use of technology, mind you!) and when the whales were silenced, the probe headed for Earth.

My guess is this probe doesn't have warp speed, because it took almost 300 years to arrive. That's a nice thing to do for a pen pal. The probe, not in Earth's orbit, is vaporizing the oceans, looking for whales.

It's a real good thing Spock got brought back to life, or no one would have figured out that if you go back in time and kidnap a whale from the 20th Century, and bring it forward in time, it could tell this probe to get lost.

Okay, big leap of faith,. If I were the whale, I'd tell the probe to kill off all the nasty humans, but that's just me. Anyway, the time travel thing works. Scotty tries to use a MacIntosh, and Checkov gets caught stealing photons from the nuclear vessels (someone should have told him that sunlight is photons).

This is arguably the best of the STAR TREK movies, which unfortunately isn't saying much, but if you HAVE to watch a Trek flick, watch this one.

Summary: Second-worst of the six movies
Review: The movie starts off well but degenerates badly once the characters arrive at earth. The beginning of the movie is also reminiscent (unfortuantely) of the early part of the first movie. In this movie, just substitute an alien whale-lover for V'Ger.

There are some humorous moments here and there once the crew returns to 20th-century Earth, but the movie is irreparably marred by a thinly-veiled and silly political agenda on the part the movie's producers. It turns into an embarassing "Save the whales" commercial.

Summary: Seeing it for the first time.
Review: I was completely astounded by the quality of this DVD. This is the first time Paramount has used a dual-layered disc for the "Star Trek" films. The quality is 2 times better than the other Trek DVDs because they use 2 times the data. It's unfortunate that Paramount didn't have the foresight to use dual layered discs for their other Trek DVDs. Popping this DVD in the player was like watching the movie for the first time. The sound quality and picture quality is absolutely flawless. The quality of the transfer is remarkable. I've been use to watching the film on fuzzy VHS and poor quality broadcasts, so this was an exciting discovery for me. I can't wait for the ST III to come out on DVD, I'm sure the film quality will also be a big improvement. Go buy this DVD, you haven't seen this film until you buy it.

Summary: Best of the Star Trek films!
Review: This film is pure magic. You can FEEL that the people who play in it (the Star Trek crew) have a long history together and that is what makes the movie work. The way they interact with each other, the things they say and do; it wouldn't be possible in just any movie.
In this film, the best scenes of Star Trek history are to be found: the scene in which Kirk explains that Spock has had too much LDS in the 60's, the scene where Scotty starts talking to the 20th century computer - I could go on!
In short: highly recommendable, even for non-trek fans.

Summary: Great Movie!
Review: Already owning this movie on VHS, I was reluctant to purchase it on DVD, but after seeing it Widescreen DVD, it is DEFINETLY worth getting the DVD. This is my favorite of the Star Trek Movies with the original cast members. The plot is great, and the comic element in the movie is played just right, especially with Spock and his "colorful metaphors". The action in the movie also keeps you on the edge of your seat. There are a few inconsistencies with the Star Trek saga, i.e. how easy it was for the crew to travel back in time. But overall it's a great movie. Also the DVD Featurette with Leonard Nimoy on the making of the film was very interesting; especially how they did the special effects with the Whales.
