Summary: Technically, a bad example of DVD production
Review: I won't review the contents of STNG, assuming that everyone interested in getting this set knows what they're going to get: a nice science fiction TV series.

My remarks will focus on the quality of DVD reproduction. It's clearly a poor example DVD authoring. First thing first; there is no digital improvement on the original analog scanning, I believe. You can clearly see, the effects of aliasing, an artifact occurs while digitizing from one sample rate to the other; as if they scanned just from a VHS cassette with lower resolution, instead of using the high quality recordings. In other words, you can see discrete lines on the screen which makes the whole frame, that is something you don't expect from a DVD. These could be eliminated by use of suitable filters, after digitizing before authoring the DVD. This effect is more noticable with black background scenes - ships in space. Actually, I'm quite surprised that, they didn't use high resolution copies of it for digitizing (if there were any) instead of cheap broadcast quality. So, the image quality is one of the worse I've ever seen on DVD, and it's quite surprising for such a quality TV series.

Sound is also very disturbing. It's claimed that, they offer 5.1 surround sound. However, I couldn't hear any significant difference between 5.1 mode and stereo mode. They probably, just converted the original stereo to 5.1 with little processing (like 3D effects), which is acceptable for a series produced for TV broadcast, which is only stereo. So, it would be less misleading, not to use 5.1 mode at all.

Besides, 5.1 mode confusion, the sound quality is as bad as picture quality. Thus, they match quite well! This appears to be worse when commander Riker talks. His voice has higher pitches, and sometimes it sounds like noise, or as if he talks with his nose blocked! In short, it's again a big disappointment.

And, finally, the chapter organization indicates that, it has been produced in a rush. Looks like they didn't pay the necessary attention, care for it. As an example, chapter 2 starts at different times on different episodes. Sometimes, it's just after initial introduction titles/credits, sometimes it's far later then it. This lack of care is also seen at the disk titles. There is no consistency in labeling them. The disk titles are: NEXTGEN, NEXTGEN2, STNGD3, STNG4,... in increasing disk numbers. You got the point!

Nevertheless, it's a great TV series on DVD with VHS or lower quality. The only advantage of having it on DVD instead of VHS, that I could see, was jumping from one point to another quickly. My final words would be: A cheap DVD production which should ashame the original creators.

Summary: The first of the best
Review: What can I say? The best Star Trek series ever, on DVD, from the very beginning? I am THERE. Of course, the first season, they were still a little rough around the edges, getting their acts together (remember boys in skirts?!). But, there was Tasha Yar, and that says it all. Great set to own for any Trekkie collection.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: Finally, all on DVD (and only 7 discs, not the many for The Original Series) comes Star Trek on tv. These sets are great for fans and non-fans alike. You can jump to your favorite episodes of the season and the sound quality is excellent having been digitally remastered.

The first season of The Next Generation has some great episodes and really does a good job of building on The Original Series and the movies to that time. It continues the themes and timeline developed earlier while bringing new characters and a new Enterprise further into the future.

I can't wait for the rest of the season sets. Bring on the DVDs for DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

Summary: What's Here, and What's Not
Review: This is for Trek fans, pure and simple. It is more bang for the buck in that each episode costs about half what DVD's of TOS cost. All the first season episodes are included in the order they were broadcast, plus some cast interviews. This stuff you have seen before, it's recycled from prior TNG specials.

What's missing: Video quality sometimes dips for no apparent reason on some special effects shots where a ghost of the "blue screen" will appear around the Enterprise. Unlike most every other movie DVD, there is no feature for showing "cut" or deleted scenes, or blooper out-takes. This would have really added value for the purchaser and their absence has not gone unnoticed...

Summary: Great box set!!
Review: I really love this box set. Anybody who has even a slight intrest in Star Trek would enjoy this. My only question is why did'nt they do this with the original Star Trek series? The volumes and indivdual cases take up way too much space.

Summary: DVD looks like a VHS tape
Review: This DVD release is, sadly, disappointing in its video quality. I am canceling the pre orders for season 2-7 due to the unsatisfactory video quality in this DVD set. Since these red-laser DVD's will not be compatible with the new blue-laser DVDs players due out by the end of 2002, I can't justify investing money in a DVD that does not look much better than plain old VHS. I have the first season of TNG on laser disc(now obsolete and worthless!) and the video quality is bright, crisp, and clear. I expected the DVD to maintain this level of quality. Until Paramount delivers a better product, I will keep my money.

Summary: Star Trek TNG Season 1
Review: Overall: Fun to watch Star Trek on DVD and worthwhile to own if you can store all the DVDs. My first impressions other then fun to watch Star Trek were that they missed in a few basic user friendly things that is indicative of a company making a product for the first time - but it didn't impact the joy of watching the show.

Quibbles: interface is odd: the menu interface looks like star trek (nice), but with no info. The episode numbers are off (first number is 721?), each title has its own color so you cant tell where you are when selecting an episode, and 'return' on the menu doesn't return it goes to the higher menu. And you must eject the DVD to see the what's on the disc... the container doesn't have that *trivial* info.

Container: nice look, but to big for DVD storage units, i.e. I cant store it, and 7 seasons takes up a lot of space. If I can't store them, why get them - and this is just The Next Generation.

Verdict - I will get rid of this boxed set and get the series when they re-release the series in containers that fits in DVD storage units - and hopefully in a double wide DVD container with just 4 discs... now were talking.

Summary: VERY BAD Image Quality
Review: Make no mistake! Serious corners have been cut here in order to cram the whole first season onto 7 DVD's with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. THE IMAGE QUALITY IS LAUGHABLE! I am VERY disappointed. You know it's bad when The Original Series on DVD looks STELLAR in comparison to The Next Generation! Compression artifacts abound. It's embarrassing to show these to friends.
