Rating: Summary: Not worth the time or money Review: This film was an HBO film, so I figured it would be rather good. The movie starts out very slow and never fully explains the story which is the foundation for the movie. It does have some good "smaller" stories in the movie for younger children, but I would never show this movie to my children. It portrays the life of a black ex-con trying to make a living and make a diffeence in L.A. Although this may sound like an inspiring movie, it was not. The backlighting of the movie was very dim which made it hard to pay attention. If you like slow movies, then this one is for you. If you like movies that keep the interest level high, this movie is not for you.
Rating: Summary: Laurence Fishburne Shines! Review: This movie transports you to a reality that most of us would like to pretend does not exist. I believed every minute of it! Excellent writing and directing make this movie work on every level. If "you" know how to think, this movie will open your heart up to see things as they are. Just an awesome adventure!
Rating: Summary: Only slow if you're on speed... Review: To the viewer who thought this movie was slow, I have to ask, "What do you expect from a drama??" I stumbled on to this movie and I found it very compelling and thought provoking...and all the things a drama should be. To Laurence Fishburn fans who want a "fast" movie that doesn't require you to think too much, go rent the Matrix. If you're looking for a well crafted, thinking movie that takes a real look at racism and life on the poor side of town, this is for you.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: We are subscribed to a DVD online rental service and sometimes they send us movies we didn't order. It was the same with this movie. When I saw the cover I expected the average drug gang fights other drug gang in nigger gettho in the states. The title is very misleading IMO. So I watched this movie because I had nothing else to do, and I was quite surprised about it. Yes, it was about gettho life in the US but it was quite different from what I expected.
It is a very gripping story about an ex prisoner because of murder, and how he tries to live his life after he is back in freedom.
The movie is very emotional and powerfull and I watched it the next day again (which says somethign because I VERY rarely do this) and still enjoyed it.
What I don't really understand is why it is rated as 18. I have seen movies for 12 years where more violence was portrayed. Only the language could be seen offensive by some, but it fits in the setting of the movie.
I can only recommend this to everybody.
